Class 2A Volleyball Weekly Review and Preview

With a little more than a moth left to go in the regular season, we see a lot of movement in the CHSAA Seeding Index. This week we take another look at the top 16 teams that are likely in a different position than last week and see what games occurred that caused all of the shifting.

Lyons

This week, Lyons hits the top of the CHSAA Seeding Index and got wins over Gilpin County 3-0, DCA 3-0 and Highland 3-2 in the last week of play to put them at 9-0 overall, 5-0 in league play, and puts them 1st in the MileHigh League. Tonight the Lions will play another league game and will host Flatirons Academy to try and maintain their perfect record. The team will then play in some tournament play this weekend and will face Evangel Christian Academy and Byers. Then next week the team will face Cheraw on 9/29.

Leading the Lyons’ stat board are Michaela Coleman with 39 total blocks and 109 kills, Carmen Dumbauld with 14 total blocks, 22 serving aces, 76 digs, and 260 assists, Poet MacKinnon with 10 total blocks, Annabelle Hay with 33 serving aces, 15 assists, 76 kills and 119 receptions, Audrey Voss with 23 serving aces, 92 digs, 67 kills and 107 receptions, and Gwen Gadbaw with 77 sigs, 9 assists, and 137 receptions.

Holyoke

The Dragons are 8-2 overall on the season after getting wins over Haxtun 3-1, Cheyenne Wells 3-2 and Prairie 3-1. Holyoke is 2-1 in league play and currently sitting 4th in the Lower Platte League and 2nd in the CHSAA Seeding Index. Coming up for the team will be a game tonight on the road against Perkins County and then some tournament play to end the week on 9/27 where they will see opponents like Stratton and Yuma. Next week the team will kick off play with a league game against Caliche on 9/30.

Simla

Simla is at 8-2 overall on the season with a 2-0 league record and are 1st in the Black Forest league and 3rd in the CHSAA Seeding Index. In the last week of play, the Cubs got a big win over McClave 3-0, Calhan 3-0 and Wiggins 3-0. This week, the team will play in tournament play on 9/27 and will face Hoehne and Kit Carson during this play. Then next week the team will resume league play and will face Peyton on 9/30 and Monument Academy on 10/2.

Leading the Cubs on the stat board are Katie Gotschall with 19 total blocks, Haylee Easler with 15 total blocks, Trenna Kocerha with 13 total blocks, 18 serving aces, 64 digs, 158 assists, and 75 kills, Kinlee Cox with 19 serving aces and 159 assists, Brynlee Amendt with 15 serving aces, 93 kills and 74 receptions, Ava Leininger with 119 digs and 168 receptions, and Carlee Cox with 88 digs, 8 assists, 100 kills and 89 receptions.

Sanford

As one of two teams in 2A who still has a perfect record, Sanford currently sits with an 8-0 overall record on the season with a 3-0 league record and are currently 1st in the Southern Peaks League. In the last week of play, the Mustangs were able to get the win over league rival Del Norte 3-2, La Veta 3-0 and Trinidad 3-0. The team will be looking to keep their success going as they finish out the month of September by facing Escalante on 9/26 and Buena Vista in 9/27. Then the Mustangs will kick off the last full month of play by going on the road and facing Centauri on 10/2.

Dolores

In the last week of play, Dolores was able to get wins over Telluride 3-1 and Norwood 3-0 but lost their fist game of the season to league opponent Ignacio 1-3. The Bears are now 10-1 overall on the season with a 5-1 league record and are now sitting 2nd in the San Juan Basin League. The team will be looking to bounce back from their loss and get another win to end the week. Dolores will be facing Ridgway on 9/27 and then will start next week with a league game against Mancos on 10/2.

Stat leaders for Dolores are Addyson Wyatt with 18 total blocks, 68 digs, 150 assists, and 21 kills, Akaia Edwards with 7 total blocks, Aubree Wyatt with 4 total blocks, 19 assists, 167 kills and 97 receptions, Kendall Chavez with 36 serving aces, 75 digs, 103 kills and 90 receptions, Madi Thornbrugh with 27 serving aces, and 125 assists, and Layla Mitchell with 18 serving aces, 119 digs, and 123 receptions.

Denver Christian

The Thunder are currently 10-3 overall on the season with a 2-2 league record and are sitting 6th in the Metro league and CHSAA Seeding Index. The last two games for Denver Christian resulted in wins over SkyView Academy 3-0 and Eagle Ridge Academy 3-2. The team will be looking to add more wins to their league record and will face Stargate School tonight.

Leading the Thunder’s stat board are Natalie Bohannon with 28 total blocks and 79 kills, Sloan Huscroft with 10 total blocks, Alexis Ries with 9 total blocks, Amina Weber with 27 serving aces, 107 digs, 117 kills and 178 receptions, Hadley Pellegrino with 21 serving aces and 124 assists, Bree Austin with 17 serving aces, 149 digs, 15 assists and 180 receptions, and Addison Ruter with 89 digs, 69 kills and 140 receptions.

Buena Vista

The Demons are currently 10-2 overall on the season after getting wins over Peyton 3-0 and Rye 3-1. Buena Vista currently is 3-0 in league play and are 2nd in the Southern Peaks league. The team will be looking to get that 1st place spot in league to end the week as they will travel to the current league leaders in Sanford on 9/27 to try and take the crown away from them. Next week the Demons will travel to Custer County on 9/30.

Rye

Rye had some stumbles in the last week of play and lost to Buena Vista 1-3 and Gunnison 1-3 but was able to get wins over Hoehne 3-0, Peyton 3-0 and Fowler 3-2. This puts the Thunderbolts at 9-3 overall and 4-1 in league play, putting them currently in 2nd in the Santa Fe league. Rye will be taking on Pueblo East tonight on the road and will be looking to get another win to add to their overall record.

Stat leaders for Rye are Isabella Bond with 28 total blocks and 146 kills, Hayley Newitt with 16 total blocks, Sydney Smith with 11 total blocks, Seine Roy with 38 serving aces, 229 digs, 34 assists, 216 receptions, Kaylee Walton with 33 serving aces and 55 kills, Reese Simpson with 18 serving aces and 161 assists, Olivia Donlon with 123 digs and 173 assists, Trinity Felthager with 65 digs and 103 receptions, and Taylor Pye with 77 kills. 

Swink

Swink is currently 1st in the Santa Fe League with a 7-0 league record and a 7-4 overall record. The lions were able to get a win over Walsenburg 3-0 but fell to Granada 0-3 and Cheraw 2-3. The team will be looking for another league win tonight as they will host Rocky Ford, and then next week the Lions will host Calhan on 9/30.

Stat leaders for Swink are Taylor Mendenhall with 50 total blocks, 21 serving aces, and 78 kills, Daisey Heberlie with 39 total blocks, 105 digs, 74 kills and 113 receptions, Kashlynn Blasingame with 26 total blocks, 94 digs and 145 assists, Larriana Taggart with 28 serving aces, 149 digs, 8 assists, and 177 receptions, Briana McElroy with 23 serving aces and 122 assists, Madelyn Bamber with 40 kills and Jocelynn Hames with 80 receptions.

Wiggins

The Tigers were able to get wins over Haxtun 3-0 and Akron 3-1 in the last week of play but fell to Simla 0-3. Wiggins is now 7-3 overall on the season with a 2-0 league record, putting them 2nd in the Lower Platte League and rounding out the top 10 of the CHSAA seeding Index. The Tigers will be looking to add another league win to their record and will be hosting Sedgwick County tonight. Next week the team will kick off play against Limon on 10/2.

Leading Wiggins on the stat board are Brooke Schmidt with 31 total blocks and 55 kills, Tenleigh Lorenzini with 22 total blocks and 61 kills, Serenity Hawkins with 17 total blocks, Karsyn Kerr with 23 serving aces, 108 digs, 65 kills and 101 receptions, Kellie Vicchrilli with 13 serving aces, 122 digs, 18 assists, 145 receptions, Kallie Green with 12 serving aces and 114 assists, Saria Hawkins in 82 digs and 73 receptions, and Jaydin Busch with 129 assists.

Ignacio

The Bobcats are currently 8-2 overall on the season with a 4-0 league record and are sitting in 1st in the San Juan Basin League. The team is currently on a 5 game win streak including their recent wins against Norwood 3-0, Dove Creek 3-0 and Dolores 3-1. Ignacio will be looking to maintain their success and will face Telluride on 9/27 in a road league game.

The Bobcats’ stat leaders are Alleah Neil with 48 total blocks and 65 kills, Kelly Sirios with 20 total blocks, 38 serving aces, 154 dogs, and 237 assists, Juliann Avila with 13 total blocks, Lainee Bradley with 18 serving aces, 107 digs, and 68 kills, Tarah Baker with 13 serving aces, 130 digs, 37 assists, and 173 receptions, Maliyah Martinez with 12 assists and 81 receptions, and Reggi Gustafson with 62 kills and 89 receptions.

Vail Christian

The Saints are currently 10-2 overall on the season with a 4-0 league record and are 1st in the Western Slope league. Vail Christian was able to get a couple of wins over the last week and beat Plateau Valley 3-0 and Vail Mountain 3-1. The team will play a league game tomorrow, 9/26, on the road against Rangely.

Leading the teams stat board are Ryan Baron with 21 total blocks, Mary McClarrinon with 17 total blocks, 138 kills and 105 receptions, Stella Hawkins with 10 total blocks and 16 serving aces, Betty Bartok with 25 serving aces, 66 digs, 125 assists, and 66 kills, Tenley Brasington with 21 serving aces and 188 assists, Sam Bates with 122 digs, 26 assists, and 205 receptions, and Michelle Teague with 64 digs and 100 receptions.

Sedgwick County

Sedgwick County won their last two games and beat Chase County 3-1 and Brush 3-0. The Cougars are now 8-3 overall and will be playing their first league game tonight against Wiggins and will be looking to add their first win to their league record. Tomorrow the team will play Wray on the road and then next week the team will take on Perkins County.

Leading Sedgwick County on the stat board are Piper Buettenback with 20 total blocks and 57 kills, Lainee Nein with 11 total blocks, 15 serving aces, 100 digs, 118 assists, 150 kills and 67 receptions, Addison Renquist with 10 total blocks, 96 digs, 42 assists, and 63 receptions, Grace Amendt with 17 serving aces and 99 receptions, and Ryen Carlson with 140 digs, 156 assists, and 57 kills.

Burlington

The Cougars find themselves sitting at 14 in the CHSAA Seeding Index with a 5-3 overall record, a 2-0 league record and they are sitting in 2nd in the Union Pacific league. Burlington won their last two games, beating Genoa-Hugo/Karval 3-2 and Byers 3-1. Tonight the Cougars will face Cheyenne Wells on the road, then the team will play Kiowa on 9/27 at home and then they will be back on the road to play Yuma on 10/2.

Stat leaders for Burlington are Emma McNerney with 18 total blocks and 63 kills, Rayvonn Holmes with 8 total blocks and 173 assists, Peyton Stults with 8 total blocks and 13 serving aces, Shayd Skarphol with 15 serving aces, 95 digs, and 108 receptions, Bethany Cure with 15 serving aces and 95 kills, Briar Simpson with 164 digs, 17 assists, and 202 receptions, Lynzee Neal with 74 digs and 92 kills, Jandri Barkhuizen with 97 assists, and My lee with 91 receptions.

West Grand

The Mustangs are 11-1 overall on the season with a 2-0 league record and are 2nd in the Western Slope League. West Grand was able to win their last two games, beating Vail Mountain 3-0 and North Park 3-1. The team will be looking to add more wins to their league record and will take on Plateau Valley on 9/26 and Rangely on 10/3.

Leading the stat board for the Mustangs are Jocelyn Holmes with 18 total blocks and 51 kills, Cara Osborne with 8 total blocks, Amber Williams with 6 total blocks, Brooke Terryberry with 32 serving aces, 99 digs, 92 kills and 175 receptions, Karla Gonzalez with 28 serving aces, 124 digs, 24 assists, and 173 receptions, Brooke James with 23 serving aces, 97 digs, 62 kills and 155 receptions, Matti Hayes with 153 assists, Teagan Bruchez with 58 assists, and Jocelyn Holmes with 51 kills.

Ascent Classical Academy

The Guardians currently sit at the top 16 in the CHSAA seeding Index with a 10-3 overall record, a 3-0 league record, and a 2nd place spot in the Foothills league. The team was able to get wins over ACA 3-0, Poudre Community Academy 3-0 and STEMSHR 3-0. Ascent Classical will be looking to add more wins to their record and stay towards the top of the seeding index and will play Liberty Tree Academy tonight on the road, and then next week they will play league opponents William Smith on 9/29 and Loveland Classical on 10/1.

Leading the Guardians on the stat board are Ayla Cowdrey with 3 total blocks and 26 kills, Madeline McCarthy with 3 total blocks, 31 assists and 20 kills, Rebecca Graham with 3 total blocks and 10 serving aces, Keirian Barnett with 14 serving aces, 50 digs, 32 kills and 55 receptions, Grace Gilmartin with 71 digs and 110 receptions, Briar Hegarty with 21 digs and 46 receptions, and Grace Nungesser with 1 assists.
