CLASS 1A VOLLEYBALL REPORT – WEEKEND

Class 1A has some very important matches on Friday, and two big tournaments on Saturday. The rankings used in this report come from the most recent update to the CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index.

FRIDAY

#4 FLEMING (10-1) VS #13 PRAIRIE (8-1)

Fleming made it five sweeps in its last six matches, defeating Lone Star 25-18/21/20 on Thursday. The lone match in their current winning streak saw the Lady Wildcats beat 2A #8 Wiggins in four. Prairie suffered its first loss of the season last Friday, falling to 2A #3 Holyoke in four sets. The Lady Mustangs won the opener, then saw the Lady Dragons take the next three, 27-25 in the fourth. Fleming has won 24 straight in the series with its NCL opponent, and 48 of the last 49.

#7 CALICHE (8-0) VS WELDON VALLEY (3-9)

Caliche was pushed hard by 2A Yuma on Tuesday, but the Lady Buffs came out with a five-set victory, 15-8 in the fifth. Six Lady Buffs had at least three kills, led by Hallie Lewis with 14 and Alexis Breidenbach with eight. Ryann Svoboda put away six to go with four blocks and five aces. Breidenbach and Hayden Walker had 18 digs apiece, and Faye Lueck tallied 17. Weldon Valley dropped its third straight on Thursday, falling to NCL rival Briggsdale in five. The Lady Warriors led 2-0 before being reverse swept.

#9 GRANADA (10-1) VS WILEY (3-7)

Granada has seven sweeps in its current eight-match winning streak, including three straight. The most recent came against #11 Eads last Friday. Freshman Camryn Coleman led the way in that win with 13 kills. Dayzriana Quintana was the top back row defender with 20 digs, and Kinsley Williams distributed 31 assists. Wiley lost for the fifth time in a row on Tuesday, overcoming a 2-1 deficit against Holly, only to lose 9-15 in the fifth. Lylah Reinhardt paced the Lady Panther defense with 24 digs, and she and Jacee Kravig had 14 assists apiece.

#10 STRATTON (4-1) VS IDALIA (2-6)

Stratton’s last action came last Saturday when the Lady Eagles overcame a 2-1 deficit to beat Akron in five, 17-15 in the fifth. Sophie Isenbart tallied 24 kills, three blocks, and 11 digs for the Lady Eagles. Kaylynn Brandon led with 15 digs and 24 assists. The wait to return to action has been a day longer for the Lady Wolves, who lost to #6 Hi-Plains last Friday in four. Bristal Robertson led four Lady Wolves with six or more kills, putting down 11. Tatum Soehner tallied eight, while Evelyn Cruz and Brigette Kite added seven and six, respectively.

#11 EADS (8-2) VS WALSH (1-9)

Eads has won two straight since its loss to Granada last Friday, beating South Baca and Holly is straight sets. Kara Wilson, Bailey Sierra, Anna Wollert, and Jordynn Turcotte all had eight kills against Holly on Monday. Aspen Nelson guided the attack with 21 assists. A 3-0 defeat by South Baca on Tuesday was the eighth in a row for Walsh. The Lady Eagles were handed losses of 25-20/17/18 in the Ark Valley match-up.

#6 HI-PLAINS (9-2) VS GENOA-HUGO/KARVAL (5-5)

Hi-Plains put its fifth straight win in the bank last Saturday, sweeping Briggsdale. Cambria Seaman led a four-pronged attack with 13 kills. Brianna Rueb tacked on 10, while Addison Henschel and Taylor Hartman added eight each. The Lady Pirates lost two last week, falling to 2A #14 Burlington in five and Otis in three. Alexis James had 15 kills in the match against Burlington, and Rylee Corn added a dozen. Amy James recorded nine.

#12 FLAGLER (6-2) AT BETHUNE (3-9)

Flagler had lost two of three heading into Thursday’s Union Pacific league match against 2A Limon, including a five-setter to 2A Byers on Tuesday. The Lady Panthers led 2-0, but got reverse swept, dropping the final set 14-16. Bethune lost its seventh in a row last Friday, as the Lady Bobcats were swept by Kiowa. Paulina Reyes led the attack with seven kills, and Nora Wycoff added six. Alondra Garcia paced the defense with 18 digs.
