CLASS 1A VOLLEYBALL REPORT – TUESDAY

BY: KERRY SHERMAN

Tuesday night gets the week off with a bang, as seven of the top 12 teams in Class 1A are in action. That includes a pair of squads out of the High Plains, who will be going at it for the lead in that league. All rankings are from the Tuesday morning release of the CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index.

#1 MERINO (10-0) VS 2A YUMA (5-9)

Thirty up, thirty down. That’s how many sets Merino has played this season, and how many the Lady Rams have won. They swept 2A Limon last Tuesday, giving up a total of 36 points. After suffering its third straight loss last Tuesday to Caliche in five, Yuma came back to win three of four last weekend. That includes taking two of three at the Akron tournament. The Lady Outlaws beat Otis in three (best of three) to take third place in the event. Berkley Nighswonger had eight kills in that win.

#3 MCCLAVE (12-2) AT #8 GRANADA (11-1)

McClave was also in the Akron tournament, where the Lady Cardinals finished runner-up to 2A #2 Holyoke in three. It was a block party for McClave, with Abrielle Gomez racking up six total blocks, and Ashlynn Steinbrunn adding five. Myla Oquist tallied four, and Addison Vallejos tacking on three Gomez went over 500 career blocks during the tournament. Granada picked up its ninth straight win, fourth by sweep, against Wiley last Saturday. Camryn Coleman put away 15 kills and added 15 digs. Emri Marquez tallied seven kills, while Emersen Hernandez and Dayzriana Quintana each added five. McClave and Granada are tied at 3-0 in the High Plains. The Lady Cards have won 27 of the last 28 meetings, including the last 21 in a row.

#4 FLATIRONS ACADEMY (11-1) AT 2A SKYVIEW ACADEMY (10-5)

Flatirons Academy is coming off its first loss, a four-set defeat by 2A #1 Lyons last Thursday. Brylin Gomer recorded 16 kills for the Lady Bison, and Claire Friedman added 11 in the loss. Everly Haynes and Jenna Nehrbass tacked on eight and seven, respectively. Lexi Richman supplied 43 assists. SkyView Academy had lost three out of four before picking up a four-set win over Dawson School last Thursday. Mei Li Scholl racked up 23 kills, one shy of the entire Lady Mustang squad. Evelyn Gilbert added 10 total blocks, six of them solo.

#5 CALICHE (9-0) AT 2A #2 HOLYOKE (12-2)

Caliche needed five sets to oust Yuma in LPAA play on Tuesday, but then cruised to a sweep of Weldon Valley in non-league action on Friday. Hallie Lewis put down 17 kills for the Lady Buffs in the latter of those two contests, while Faye Lueck and Ryann Svoboda recorded five each. Lueck also served up five aces. Holyoke’s run through the Akron tournament last Saturday pushed its winning streak to eight. The Lady Dragons won six out of seven sets in beating Stratton, Yuma, and McClave. Caliche keeps a share of the lead in the LPAA with a win, while Holyoke needs a win to stay one game out of the lead.

#7 EVANGEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY (11-3) VS MIAMI-YODER (5-8)

ECA lost its opening game in the Byers tournament to Lyons in three, but bounced back to beat Byers in a sweep, and Cheraw in four. Ellie Wagner totaled 64 kills in the tournament, including 36 in the win over Cheraw. Mia Castro had 20 of her 41 kills in that same match. Alyssa Costain racked up 50 assists. After dropping two straight and four of five, Miami-Yoder got a sweep win over Manzanola last Friday. Mindy Quintana dealt five aces, and Keila Godinez added four.

#12 FLAGLER (8-2) AT #17 STRATTON (6-3)

Following back to back losses, Flagler got back on track with a sweep win over 2A Limon last Thursday and the Lady Panthers added a four-set victory over Bethune on Saturday. They sit one game behind Union Pacific leaders Burlington and Stratton. Stratton lost both of its pool play matches in the Akron tournament last Saturday, falling to both Holyoke and Yuma in two sets apiece. The Lady Eagles salvaged the day by beating Akron in three sets, claiming their second win over the Lady Rams in a week. Sophie Isenbart finished the event with 24 kills, one more than Kinsleigh Brachtenbach. Both had 13 in the win over Akron.
