Class 2A Volleyball Weekly Review and Preview

With a month left in the regular season, we will take a look at the teams who are in the playoff bubble, but not at the top. Most of these teams will remain in playoff contention if they continue their success while others may be slipping down the seeding index and could be in trouble at the end of the month.

Monte Vista

The Pirates are about halfway through the regular season and are sitting at a 6-4 overall record, with a 2-3 league record and are currently 4th in the Southern Peaks League. Monte Vista was able to win both of their games in the last week of play, beating both Trinidad and Creede 3-0. The team will be looking to get another win added to their record tonight as they will take on South Park. Next week the Pirates will face Sierra Grande on 10/6 and Dove Creek on 10/11.

Stat leaders for Monte Vista are Madison Henderhan with 14 total blocks and 13 serving aces, Hannah Henderhan with 9 total blocks, 12 assists 40 kills, and 10 receptions, Destiny Pacheco with 6 total blocks, 13 serving aces, and 36 kills, Evie Hinds with 10 serving aces, 34 digs and 123 assists, Reminee Mascarenas with 96 digs and 85 receptions, Krissa Padilla with 43 digs and 26 receptions, and Abbi Ortega with 76 assists.

Ascent Classical Academy

The Guardians are currently 13-3 overall on the season with a 5-0 league record and a 1st place spot in the Foothills league. In the last week of play the team was able to get wins over Liberty Tree Academy 3-0, William Smith 3-0 and Loveland Classical  3-1. ACA will be looking to get more wins added to their record as we enter the last month of regular season play and will face Nederland on 10/3 and AWCPA on 10/6.

Leading the team on the stat board are Madeline McCarthy with 11 total blocks, 58 serving aces, 101 assists, and 58 kills, Keirian Barnett with 7 total blocks, 53 serving aces, 108 digs, 4 assists, 83 kills and 114 receptions, Annie Skagerberg with 6 total blocks, Grace Nungesser with 19 serving aces, Grace Gilmartin with 163 digs and 192 receptions, Ayla Cowdrey with 117 assists and 63 kills, and Briar Hegarty with 88 receptions.

Del Norte

The Tigers were able to get two league wins in their last games, beating Sargent 3-2 and Center 3-1. Del Norte is now 5-4 on the season with a 1-1 league record and currently in 3rd in the Southern Peaks League. The Tigers will end their week with a road game against South Park on 10/3 and then will play a league game against Crested Butte next week on 10/7.

Stat leaders for Del Norte are Addie Roepke with 15 total blocks and 48 kills, Ady Ruybal with 6 total blocks, Makenzie Consaul with 4 total blocks, Julia Trujillo with 20 serving aces, 101 digs and 4 assists, Brynley Brown with 16 serving aces, 133 digs, and 110 kills, Naylie Velasquez with 9 serving aces and 33 assists, Emma Parra with 137 digs and 76 kills, and Caleigh Sierra with 24 assists.

Meeker

The Meeker Cowboys are currently 7-3 overall on the season with a 4-1 league record, and are in 2nd in the Western Slope League. The team is on a 4 game win streak including their two most recent wins over Hayden 3-0 and Rangely 3-0. The Cowboys will be looking to continue their win streak and will play Cedaredge on 10/3 and West Grand to end the week on 10/4.

Meeker stat leaders are Raegan Clatterbaugh with 9 total blocks, 12 serving aces, 55 digs, 53 kills and 76 receptions, Sawyer May with 4 total blocks and 19 serving aces, Rylee Sullivan with 3 total blocks, 19 serving aces, 88 digs, 77 kills and 68 receptions, Braydin Raley with 121 digs and 10 assists, Jacey Follman with 146 assists, Hailey Schwartz with 60 assists, and Lilly Newman with 42 kills.

Daysprings Christian Academy

DCA has a 7-6 overall record, a 4-1 league record and are 2nd in the Mile High League. The Eagles were able to gran a few wins last week, beating Bellview Christian 3-0, La Veta 3-0, and Idalia 3-0, but the team did fall to Simla 0-3. DCA will be looking for more wins now in October and will face SkyView Academy tonight and then they will travel to Estes Park to kick off next week

Leading DCA’s stat board are Ashley Teele with 24 total blocks and 121 kills, Abby Casey with 18 total blocks, 20 serving aces, and 42 kills, Bella Flores with 8 total blocks, 138 digs, 112 kills and 112 receptions, Hadley Bonnell with 20 serving aces, 95 digs, and 162 receptions, Sophia O’Neill with 17 serving aces and 7 assists, Matise Lujan with 110 digs and 123 receptions, Addy Konzek with 275 assists, and Brynnli Bryson with 21 assists.

Fowler

The Grizzlies are currently 8-3 overall on the season with a 4-2 league record and are 3rd in the Santa Fe League. Fowler Lost to Rye 2-3 but was able to come back and beat Las Animas 3-0 and Kit Carson 3-0. The Grizzlies will face Lamar and Denver Christian on 10/4 to end the week and then will start next week with a rematch against Rye on 10/7.

Leading the Grizzlies’ stat board are Kacie Day with 14 total blocks, Lorelai Woods with 7 total blocks,  Madison Porto with 7 total blocks, Jaslyn Bates with 21 serving aces, 161 digs, 97 kills and 105 receptions, Syriah Alvarez with 17 serving aces, 98 digs, 151 assists, and 63 kills, Delilah Mason with 17 serving aces, Kory Pieper wit 169 digs, 12 assists, 67 kills and 128 receptions, and Kathy Jackson with 68 receptions.

Highland

The Huskies won their last two games, beating Clear Creek 3-0 and Dawson School 3-0. Highland is now 10-5 overall on the season with a 4-2 league record and a 4th place spot in the Mile High League. The team will try and keep their win streak going and will face a tough opponent in Holyoke on 10/4 and then they will travel to Heritage Christian on 10/7.

Stat leaders for Highland are Isabella Tiley with 26 total blocks and 80 kills, Madison Smith with 16 total blocks, Abbie Martinez with 11 total blocks and 50 kills, Leah Varra with 41 serving aces, 79 digs, and 175 assists, Annabelle Crider with 26 serving aces, 159 digs and 19 assists, Nikki Quinones with 25 serving aces, Ryleigh Wares with 82 digs and 2 receptions, Morgan Linstrom with 85 assists, and Austyn Bingley with 3 receptions.

Wray

The Eagles are at 6-10 on the season after losing to Sedgwick County 0-3, Colby 0-2. And Goodland 0-2. The loss to the cougars also dropped their league record to 1-2 and the team is now in 7th in the Lower Platte League. Tonight will be a tough test for Wray as they will take on Holyoke to end the week. Next week, Wray will play Burlington on 10/7.

Leading the Eagles’ stat board are Mariah DeLand with 22 total blocks, 32 serving aces, and 102 kills, Brylee Meisner with 13 total blocks, Ansley DePue with 13 total blocks, Kyla Kramer with 25 serving aces 115 digs, 79 kills and 176 receptions, Grace Linman with 13 serving aces, 89 assists, and 99 receptions, Jaycie Snapp with 178 digs and 214 receptions, Emerson Rockwell with 97 digs and 194 assists, and Katie Harms with 33 assists.

Byers

The Bulldogs had split success in the last week of play, falling to Cheraw 0-3, and ECA 0-3, but getting wins over Flagler 3-2 and Lyons 3-2. Byers is now 5-6 overall, 1-1 in league play and 4th in the Union Pacific league. Tonight the team will face Deer Trail in a league game where they will be looking to get a win and move their way up the league ranks. Next week, Byers will play Elbert on 10/7 to start their week of play.

Stat leaders for Byers are Taiya Eymann with 12 total blocks, Karley Linnebur with 10 total blocks, 33 serving aces, 144 digs, 9 assists and 119 kills, Jocelynn Rector with 10 total blocks, 23 serving aces, 107 digs, and 251 assists, Leyla Sayler with 22 serving aces, 107 digs, and 251 assists, Abi Green with 18 assists, 43 kills and 170 receptions, and Jenah Bequette with 209 receptions.

Custer County

Custer County is 8-4 overall on the season and are currently 3-0 in league play, holding onto that 1st place spot in the West Central Legue. In the last week of play, the Bobcats beat Cotopaxi 3-0 and Center 3-1 but fell to Buena Vista 0-3. Tonight Custer County will play Crested Butte on the road before they take a little over a week off of play.

Leading the team on the stat board are Cadence Weeks with 11 total blocks, 25 serving aces, and 64 kills, Brylee Shy with 4 total blocks, 58 digs, 75 kills and 86 receptions, Abbigail Hemsath with 3 total blocks, 18 serving aces, and 33 kills, Stephanie Lewis with 17 serving aces, 48 digs, and 166 assists, Hayden Hampton with 79 digs and 127 receptions, Trinity Downing with 19 assists and 78 receptions, and Kenzee Creasy with 7 assists.

Haxtun

Haxtun currently sits with a 5-8 overall record, a 0-4 league record, and in 9th in the Lower Platte League. The Fightin’ Bulldogs was able to get a win over Cheyenne Wells 3-0 after losing to Wray 2-3 in the last couple of games. The team will be looking to get more wins added to their league record and will play Merino on 10/3. Haxtun will then travel to Weldon Valley on 10/4 and will play Yuma next week on 10/7.

Heritage Christian

Heritage Christian is 2-2 in league play, 7th in the Mile High League and 9-4 overall so far this season. The Eagles won their last game against Union Colony Prep 3-0 and will be looking to keep their success going as they will face league opponent Belleview Christian tonight, GVCA on 10/4 and then Highland on 10/7.

Leading the Eagles on the stat board are Kristin Osborne with 18 total blocks, 36 serving aces, 95 digs, and 285 assists, Abby Nauman with 5 total blocks and 46 kills, Caleigh Smith with 5 total blocks, Annabelle Loucks with 50 serving aces, 87 digs, 137 kills and 121 receptions, Abby Leveillee with 18 serving aces, 128 digs, 28 assists, and 226 receptions, and Cadence Smith with 17 assists, 48 kills and 103 receptions.

Caprock Academy

Caprock Academy currently has a 9-4 overall record this season with a 4-2 league record and are 4th in the Western Slope League. To end September, the Eagles were able to beat Grand Valley 3-1 and bring their win streak up to 3 games. The team will not play again until 10/14 where they will play Grand Valley again and will be hoping for the same outcome.

Topping the Caprock Academy stat board are Kyla Hardy with 22 total blocks, Alaina Scripps with 20 total blocks, Zoey Polson with 20 total blocks, 70 digs, 92 assists, and 75 kills, Taylor Phillips with 27 serving aces, 184 digs, 19 assists, 114 kills and 242 receptions, Ali Guffey with 25 serving aces and 112 assists, Rachel Bogan with 14 serving aces and 64 kills, Katie Repshire with 118 digs and 218 receptions, and Anna Caldwell with 117 receptions.

Hoehne

The Farmers of Hoehne are 8-8 overall on the season with a 4-2 league record and are 4th in the Santa Fe League. Hoehne fell to Simla 0-3 last week but was able to beat Idalia 3-2 and SCA 3-0. The Farmers will be looking to keep their success going and will play Walsenburg tonight on the road and then will host Swink next week on 10/7.

Stat leaders for Hoehne are Kaylee Schlensker with 8 total blocks, 10 serving aces, 48 digs, 18 kills and 54 receptions, Braylee Foster with 5 total blocks, 3 assists, 37 kills and 41 receptions, Ayshia Swetkey with 4 total blocks, Isabella Chacon with 12 serving aces, 43 digs, 5 assists and 51 receptions, Paisley SanRoman with 7 serving aces and 29 kills, and Mikenna Dasko with 44 digs and 91 assists.

Yuma

The Outlaws are currently 5-10 overall on the season with a 1-2 league record and are 6th in the Lower Platte League. In the last week of play, Yuma beat Brush 3-2 and Stratton 2-0, fell to Holyoke 0-2, beat Otis 2-1 and fell to Merino 0-3. Yuma will try to get more momentum and add more wins to their record and will play Burlington tonight at home. Next week Yuma will play Haxtun on 10/7.

Stat leaders for Yuma are Lauren Gonzales with 44 total blocks, 99 kills, and 253 receptions, Bailey Nighswonger with 27 total blocks, 26 serving aces, 149 digs, and196 assists, Taryn Sheffield with 25 total blocks, 21 serving aces, and 167 receptions, Berkley Nighswonger with 17 serving aces, 148 digs, and 88 kills, Lindsey Hermosillo with 170 digs and 68 kills, Aubrey Black with 125 assists and Novalee Schuetz with 17 assists.

SkyView Academy

The Hawks sit with a 10-6 overall record, a 2-4 league record and in 10th place in the Mile High League. In the last week, SkyView Academy beat Dawson School 3-1 but fell to Flatirons Academy 0-3. Tonight the team will be looking to add more wins to their record and will play league opponent DCA on the road. Next week, the team will travel to Clear Creek to play another league game on 10/6.

Leading the Hawks stat board are Evelyn Gilbert with 39 total blocks and 98 kills, Mei Li Scholl with 11 total blocks, 48 serving aces, 113 digs, 8 assists, 154 kills, and 233 receptions, Emma Francavilla with 10 total blocks,  Ellie McLaughlin with 38 serving aces and 52 kills, Kaylyn Belkowski with 25 serving aces and 96 digs, Taylor Bales with 229 digs, 10 assists and 180 receptions, and Lyla Kostiuk with 306 assists.
