CLASS 1A VOLLEYBALL REPORT – WEEKEND
BY: KERRY SHERMAN
As the month of October rolls along, the chances to earn a signature win that either gets a team the opportunity to host a regional, or even get into the field of 24, are dwindling. Our look at the top match-ups uses the latest CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index.

FRIDAY
#2 FLEMING (14-1) VS PEETZ (5-10)
Fleming’s winning streak reached double figures with a 3-0 sweep of Weldon Valley on Thursday. The Lady Wildcats are 5-0 in North Central league play with three league matches left. The first of those comes on Friday against Peetz. With a win over the Lady Bulldogs earlier in the season, Fleming has won 42 straight matches head-to-head during the MaxPreps era. Peetz took a set off of Briggsdale on Thursday, but still lost in four.
#5 GRANADA (14-2) VS WALSH (2-16)
Granada swept Holly on Monday, giving up a total of 36 points in the win. Camryn Coleman put down 15 kills for the Lady Bobcats, and Dayzriana Quintana added 12. #7 PRAIRIE (11-2) VS WELDON VALLEY (4-12)
The Lady Mustangs collected an important five-set win in non-league play against Otis. Prairie trailed by two sets before claiming the reverse sweep, 15-3 in the fifth. Hanna Kugler led a trio of Lady Mustangs with double digit kills with 18. Tanna Bailey put down 13, and Macie Jaeger tallied 11. With 39 assists, Nicole Ludgate went over the 1000 mark for her career. Weldon Valley had snapped a five-match losing streak last weekend by beating Haxtun, but the Lady Warriors could not back it up. They fell in a sweep to Fleming on Thursday. That dropped them to 2-3 in the NCL.
#10 CALICHE (9-3) AT #13 FLAGLER (9-3)
After racing out of the gate with wins in each of their first nine matches,, the Lady Buffs have since dropped their last three. The latest of those losses came on Tuesday against 2A #9 Sedgwick County in LPAA action. Hallie Lewis’ seven kills led Caliche, while Alexis Breidenbach and Ryann Svoboda both recorded six. Lily Armstrong had 11 assists and four aces, and Lewis also registered 11 assists. Flagler won for the third time in its last three matches, claiming a win in the Union Pacific by beating Genoa-Hugo/Karval in four sets. Rylie Berry racked up 15 kills, and Sydnie Berry added 13. Kenzie Schulte registered 27 assists. The Berry sisters led the Lady Panthers in digs, with Sydnie recording 33, and Rylie being one back.
#11 OTIS (10-6) AT #13 STRATTON (8-4)
The loss to Prairie on Tuesday was the fourth in five matches for Otis. The Lady Bulldogs had won the first two sets at Prairie, 27-25 and 25-11, but could not close out the win, as the Lady Mustangs rallied to win the final three sets. Stratton bounced back from last week’s tough five-set loss to Granada by beating 2A Limon in three sets on Friday. The Lady Eagles got 17 kills from Sophie Isenbart and seven from Kinsleigh Brachtenbach to remain unbeaten in Union Pacific play. Camory Wedel posted 17 of the team’s 18 assists.
#12 EADS (9-3) VS CHEYENNE WELLS (6-8)
Eads saw its modest three-match winning streak end in a four-set loss to #14 Cheraw. The defeat dropped the Lady Eagles to 0-2 in the High Plains league. Kara Wilson and Anna Wollert put down 15 kills apiece for Eads. Wilson completed a triple-double with 19 assists and 20 digs. Aspen Nelson added 23 assists, and Bailey Sierra topped the team with 27 digs. Cheyenne Wells rides a six-match losing streak into the High Plains match-up following a 3-2 loss to Genoa-Hugo/Karval on Tuesday. Down 1-2, the Lady Tigers won the fourth by a 25-22 count. The visiting Lady Pirates finished off the win with a 15-13 fifth.
SATURDAY
#2 MCCLAVE (14-2) AT 2A LAS ANIMAS (6-9)
McClave lost the opening set against Hi-Plains last Saturday, but the Lady Cardinals responded by reverse sweeping the Lady Patriots in the top-10 match-up. Abrielle Gomez went off for 20 kills, and Avery Hemphill tallied 18. Myla Oquist and Ashlynn Steinbrunn both posted seven kills. Yesenia Almanza racked up a career-high 50 assists. #8 SARGENT (13-1) VS 2A #5 SANFORD (11-1)
This represents one of the last remaining chances for Sargent to pick up a big time win, which the Lady Farmers did in their last outing. They took down 2A #11 Buena Vista in four sets on Tuesday. In the three sets the Lady Farmers won, they gave up a total of 33 points. Two days after getting swept by 3A #5 Centauri for their first loss of the season, the Lady Mustangs rebounded and defeated Center in three last Saturday. Claire Crowther paced the Sanford attack with eight kills. She also recorded a team-high 12 digs.
#12 EADS AT #7 PRAIRIE
Major RPI points are on the line in this top-12 match-up. Both are in line to host a regional,, but Eads occupies the last spot and may need wins in matches like this one.

The annual Stratton Bash includes Hi-Plains, Flagler, Lone Star, Kiowa, Genoa-Hugo/Karval, Cheraw, 2A Burlington, and the hosts. The tournament is bracket play, and they will compete all the way out to seventh/eighth place.
