BY: KERRY SHERMAN

As the penultimate week of regular season play rolls along, 21 teams look to be safely in the regional field in Class 1A. That would leave three spots up for grabs. Today, we take a look at the teams on the bubble, according to the latest release of the CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index.

#22 GENOA-HUGO/KARVAL (9-10)

The Lady Pirates begin the week .066 out of 21st place, currently owned by Akron, and .041 ahead of 24th place. They play #39 Deer Trail on Tuesday, #6 Granada on Thursday, and #41 Wiley on Friday.

#23 CHEYENNE WELLS (8-10)

Cheyenne Wells is about .022 behind Genoa-Hugo/Karval, which places them about the same ahead of the #24 spot. This week has the Lady Tigers facing #16 Flagler on Tuesday, #35 Springfield on Thursday, and ##54 Hanover on Friday.

#24 ELBERT (14-7)

As noted above, the Lady Bulldogs trail Cheyenne Wells by .022, but their hold on the spot is far from comfortable. Kiowa trails by just .003. Elbert only has one match this week, and it’s one that could help the cause if the Lady Bulldogs can get a win against 2A #22 Ascent Classical Academy. The Lady Bulldogs could finish in the position and still miss regionals, as the winner of the 5280 will be guaranteed a spot in the field. Three teams in that league have a shot at claiming that berth, and all are outside of the top-24.

#25 KIOWA (10-7)

The Lady Indians aren’t just close to the spot ahead of them, but they’re also just .004 ahead of Weldon Valley. Kiowa goes to #39 Deer Trail on Friday.

#26 WELDON VALLEY (6-13)

Weldon Valley is just .007 out of the final spot in the field, with two teams to jump to get there. The Lady Warriors begin a crucial stretch for their postseason hopes, starting with #18 Lone Star on Thursday. They also go to #16 Flagler on Friday. Next Tuesday, the Lady Warriors host #8 Prairie.

#27 MILE HIGH ACADEMY (9-5)

Despite being close to .017 behind Elbert for the final spot, Mile High Academy could wind up in that final spot by winning the 5280. The Lady Mustangs are half a game behind #29 Front Range Baptist, and half a game ahead of #32 Denver Waldorf. All three have two league losses. Mile High Academy has a busy week, beginning with a match against #61 Beth Eden Baptist on Tuesday. The Lady Mustangs compete in the Union College tournament in Nebraska on Thursday through Saturday.

#29 FRONT RANGE BAPTIST (12-7)

Front Range Baptist has one last match in the 5280, as the Lady Falcons take on #37 Rocky Mountain Lutheran next Tuesday. They split with both Mile High Academy and Denver Waldorf, going 1-1 against both squads. The only match on the slate this week for the Lady Falcons is a home clash with #34 Briggsdale.

#32 DENVER WALDORF (7-7)

The closing stretch for the Lady Spartans is loaded with league games, starting with #65 Victory Prep Academy on Tuesday. They also have a match with Mile High Academy next week. Denver Waldorf lost the earlier match this season to the Lady Mustangs in four sets.
