Class 2A Volleyball Weekly Review and Preview

For this week’s review and preview, we take a look at the top 8 teams in 2A as well as the bottom 8 teams who still currently remain in the playoff bubble according to the CHSAA Seeding Index. There are only about 10 days left in the regular season, so each team will be looking to maintain their positions for guaranteed hosting spots, or for just a spot in the playoffs.

1.Holyoke

Sitting 1st in the 2A Seeding Index, Holyoke currently has an 18-3 overall record, a 5-2 league record and are 3rd in the Lower Platte League. In the last three games for the Dragons, the team was able to beat Byers and Yuma 3-0 but fell to Sedgwick County 0-3. With only a couple of games left on the schedule, Holyoke will be looking to ensure their good ranking position by getting wins over Wiggins on 10/24 and Burlington next week on 10/31.

2. Lyons

Lyons currently sits behind Holyoke with the number 2 spot in the seeding index. The Lions are 15-2 on the season with a 9-0 league record and are 1st in the Mile High League. In the last week of play, Lyons lost to Flatirons Academy 0-3 but beat Estes Park 3-0. Lyons will be looking to finish their season off strong and add more wins to their record to end the regular season. Left on the Lions’ schedule are Belleview Christian on 10/23, Union Colony Prep on 10/28, SkyView Academy on 10/29 and then the Strasburg Tournament on 11/1.

Stat leaders for Lyons are Michaela Coleman with 65 total blocks and 189 kills, Carmen Dumbauld with 21 total blocks, 28 serving aces, 171 digs, and 471 assists, Layla Brown with 13 total blocks, Audrey Voss with 41 serving aces, 156 digs, 130 kills and 210 receptions, Annabella Hay with 40 serving aces, 21 assists, 141 kills and 232 receptions, and Gwen Gadbaw with 192 digs, 13 assists and 269 receptions.

3. Denver Christian

The Thunder roll into the last couple of weeks of the regular season with a 16-4 overall record, a 4-3 league record, 5th in the Metro League and 3rd in the CHSAA Seeding Index. Denver Christian is on a 6-game win streak, with their last couple of games being over Prospect Ridge Academy 3-0 and Front Range Christian 3-0. To round out the regular season, the Thunder will host Peak to Peak on 10/23 and then will travel to The Academy on 10/28 and Kent Denver on 10/30.

Leading Denver Christian on the stat board are Natalie Bohannon with 46 total blocks and 109 kills, Amina Weber with 21 total blocks, 40 serving aces, 164 digs, 210 kills, 269 receptions, Alexis Ries with 17 total blocks, Hadley Pellegrino with 29 serving aces and 202 assists, Addison Ruter with 24 serving aces, 163 digs, 103 kills and 231 receptions, Bree Austin with 226 digs, 29 assists, and 277 receptions, and Anna Price with 184 assists.

4. Simla

The Cubs are on an 11-game win streak with a 16-2 overall record, a 5-0 league record, 1st in the Black Forest League and are 4th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. In the last week the team has only played one game, resulting in a win over Liberty Tree Academy 3-0. The team has 5 games left on their schedule and will be looking to win out and keep themselves in good position as they enter the postseason. The remaining games for the Cubs are Folwer on 10/23, Fleming on 10/25, Cheraw on 10/25, Monument Academy on 10/28, and Sedgwick County on 11/1.

Leading the Cub’s stat board are Katie Gotschall with 35 total blocks, Haylee Easler with 31 total blocks, Trenna Kocerha with 23 total blocks, 291 assists, and 126 kills, Brynlee Amendt with 33 serving aces, 115 digs, 139 kills, and 123 receptions, Ava Leininger with 26 serving aces, 190 digs, and 230 receptions, Kinlee Cox with 26 serving aces and 286 assists, and Carlee Cox with 144 digs, 10 assists, 192 kills, and 145 receptions.

5. Sanford

Sanford currently sits at number 5 in the CHSAA Seeding Index with a 15-2 overall record, a 5-0 league record and are 1st in the Southern Peaks League. After falling to Sargent 0-3, the team is on a 4 game win streak, beating Sierra Grande 3-0, Mancos 3-0, Primero 3-2, and Del Norte 3-1. To round out the regular season, The Mustangs will take on Crested Butte on 10/24, Dolores on 10.24, Custer County on 10/25 and Monte Vista on 10/30.

Leading the stat board for the Mustangs are Avery Koenig with 18 total blocks and 227 assists, Jewel Caldon with 15 total blocks and 45 kills, Lettie Larson with 9 total blocks, Rose Schwartz with 31 serving aces, and 7 assists, Brinlyn Smith with 27 serving aces, 121 digs, and 250 receptions, Claire Crowther with 27 serving aces, 95 digs, 13 assists, 109 kills and 127 receptions, and Bella Peterson with 81 digs, 105 kills and 128 receptions.

6. Swink

The Lions are currently 18-4 overall on the season, 8-0 in league play, 1st in the Santa Fe League and 6th in the seeding index. Swink has won their last 11 games in a row, their most recent being over Rye 3-2, Limon 3-0 and Peyton 3-0. The team only has one game left in the regular season and will take on Fowler on 10/28 before playoffs begin.

Stat leaders for Swink are Taylor Mendenhall with 130 total blocks, 42 serving aces, and 197 kills, Daisy Herberlie with 87 total blocks, 244 digs, 176 kills and 229 receptions, Kashlynn Blasingame with 44 total blocks, 186 digs, and 340 assists, Lariana Taggart with 44 serving aces, 401 digs, 26 assists, and 406 receptions, Briana McElroy with 38 serving aces and 297 assists, Emma Gacnik with 113 kills and Jocelynn James with 180 receptions.

7. Dolores

The Bears move to number 8 in the CHSAA Seeding Index with an 18-1 overall record, a 9-1 league record and a 2nd place spot in the San Juan Basin League. Dolores did well in tournament play last weekend, getting wins over Caliche 2-0, Denver Waldorf 2-0 and Lone Start 2-1, and then started this week off with a win over Ridgeway 3-0. The Bears will be looking to finish the season with more wins on their record before the end of the regular season rolls around. Their remaining schedule will be Telluride on 10/23, Crested Butte on 10/24, Sanford on 10/24 and Ignacio on 10/28.

Leading the Dolores stat board are Addyson Wyatt with 27 total blocks, 287 assists, and 39 kills, Akaia Edwards with 13 total blocks, Madi Thornbrugh with 11 total blocks, 38 serving aces, and 216 assists, Kendall Chavesz with 64 serving aces, 176 digs, 32 assists, 190 kills and 204 receptions, Layla Mitchell with 30 serving aces, 204 digs, and 229 receptions, and Aubree Wyatt with 127 digs, 305 kills and 159 receptions.

8. Wiggins

The Tigers are in the top 8 of the CHSAA Seeding index with a 13-7 overall record, a 5-1 league record, and 2nd place in the Lower Platte League. Wiggins has played 6 games in the last week, beating Caliche 3-1, falling to Alamosa 0-2, beating Centauri 2-0, losing to Merino 1-2 and Sterling 0-2, and beating Strasburg 3-0. After a busy week, the team has three games left in the regular season and will be looking to get these wins to stay in the top 10 of the seeding index. These games will be against Briggsdale on 10/23, Holyoke on 10/24, and Wray on 10/20.

Stat leaders for the Tigers are Brooke Schmidt with 70 total blocks and 130 kills, Tenleigh Lorenzini with 42 total blocks and 108 kills, CharlieAnn Barrett with 26 total blocks, Karsyn Kerr with 31 serving aces, 196 digs, 121 kills and 216 receptions, Kellie Vicchrilli with 25 serving aces, 250 digs, 34 assists, and 340 receptions, Kallie Green with 20 serving aces and 235 assists, Saria Hawkins with 160 digs and 161 receptions, and Jaydin Busch with 230 assists.

29. Hoehne

The Farmers currently sit at 29 in the seeding index with a 10-12 overall record, a 5-3 league record and are 4th in the Santa Fe League. Hoehne is currently on a 4 game losing streak, falling to Swink 0-3, Primero 0-3, Fowler 1-3 and Rye 0-3. Hoehne will be looking to snap this streak before heading to the playoffs and will need to beat Del Norte on 10/28 to do that.

Leading Hoehne on the stat board are Kaylee Schlensker with 18 total blocks, 15 serving aces, 59 kills and 159 receptions, Braylee Foster with 13 total blocks, 17 serving aces, 143 digs, and 108 kills, Paisley San Roman with 10 total blocks and 93 kills, Isabella Chacon with 16 serving aces, 164 digs, 15 assists, and 224 receptions, Mikenna Dasko with 126 digs and 256 assists, Taylor Trujillo with 18 assists, and Cadence Doering with 106 receptions.

30. Swallows Charter Academy

Swallows Charter Academy sits in decent playoff position at 30 in the seeding index with a 12-5 overall record, a 4-3 league record, and in 5th in the Santa Fe League. The Spartans was able to get the win over Peyton when they last played 3-2 to help them bounce back from a loss to Swink 1-3 previously. To Wrap up the regular season, SCA will need to get as many wins as possible to ensure they don’t fall closer to the playoff bubble edge. These games will be against Rocky Ford on 10/23, Rye on 10.28, and Tournament play on 11/1 starting with Las Animas.

Stat Leaders for the Spartans are Keira Graham with 39 total blocks, 24 serving aces, 185 digs, 75 kills and 197 receptions, Emma Storm with 26 total blocks and 7 assists, Sydnee Borden with 10 total blocks, 66 serving aces, 166 assists, and 68 kills, Taylor Bond with 30 serving aces, 154 digs, 169 kills and 134 receptions, Grace Ochs with 156 digs and 154 assists, and Riley James with 115 receptions.

31. Wray

Wray has a 7-13 overall record currently, a 2-3 league record and are 5th in Lower Platte League. The team also sits at 31 in the CHSAA Seeding Index after losing to Brush 0-3 and beating Akron 3-2. The Eagles will need to make sure they get more wins added to their record to ensure they don’t losing their spot in the seeding index. To round out their regular season, Wray will play Yuma on 10/24, Caliche on 10/28, and Wiggins on 10/30.

Stat leaders for Wray are Mariah DeLand with 27 total blocks, 40 serving aces, and 142 kills, Ansley DePue with 21 total blocks, Brylee Meisner with 18 total blocks, Kyla Kramer with 26 serving aces, 102 kills and 252 receptions, Gracee Linman with 17 serving aces and 122 assists, Jaycie Snapp with 285 digs, 40 assists, and 346 receptions, Emerson Rockwell with 149 digs and 260 assists, and Katie Harms with 160 kills and 144 receptions.

32. Haxtun

The Bulldogs are currently in the playoff bubble at 32 in the seeding index, a 7-14 overall record, a 0-7 league record and in 9th in the Lower Platte League. Haxtun was able to beat Kimball last week 3-2 but fell to Hi-plains 2-3, and then was able to bounce back and beat Idalia 3-1. Haxtun will need to try to add more wins to their record to prevent them from falling further in the seeding index. The team will finish their regular season against DCA on 10/25 and Sedgwick County on 10/31.

33. SkyView Academy

SkyView Academy is currently 12-8 overall on the season with a 3-6 league record, 9th in the in the Mile High League and 33 in the CHSAA Seeding Index. After a loss to Heritage Christian, the Hawks were able to get a win over Sheridan 3-0 in their most recent game. The team will be looking to get more wins and ensure their playoff spot to finish the regular season. These games will be against Estes Park on 10/23, Front Range Christian on 10/27, and Lyons on 10/29.

Leading the Hawks stat board are Evelyn Gilbert with 58 total blocks and 124 kills, Mei Li Scholl with 28 total blocks, 54 serving aces, 155 digs, 9 assists, 187 kills and 294 receptions, Ellie McLaughlin with 13 total blocks, 56 serving aces, and 68 kills, Kaylyn Belkowski with 35 serving aces, 138 digs, and 122 receptions, Taylor Bales with 284 digs, 17 assists and 263 receptions, and Lyla Kostiuk with 366 assists.

34. Thomas MacLaren School

The Highlanders are 10-5 overall on the season, 2-2 in league play, 4th in the Black Fortes League and 34 in the CHSAA Seeding Index. Thomas MacLaren is on a two game winning streak, beating Atlas Preparatory School 3-0 and Miami-Yoder 3-0. The team has a lot of games to play before the end of the season and will need to get more wins to ensure their playoff spot. These games will be against Fountain Valley on 10/23, Banning Lewis Academy on 10/25, Eagle Ridge Academy on 10/25, St. Mary’s on 10/25, TCSS on 10/28 and Manitou Springs on 10/30.

Stat leaders for the Highlanders are Sara Christensen with 29 total blocks, 24 serving aces. 139 digs, 18 assists, 140 kills and 197 receptions, Peyton Mulder with 18 total blocks, 144 digs, 91 kills and 232 receptions, Evelyn Divine with 7 total blocks, Abby Hassell with 26 serving aces, 122 digs, 66 kills and 211 receptions, and Jane Ambuul with 24 serving aces and 161 assists.

35. Crested Butte

Sitting at 35 currently in the CHSAA Seeding Index, Crested Butte is 8-9 overall on the season with a 1-3 league record and are 6th in the Southern Peaks League. The Titans have not played many games in October, and their last two resulted in losses to Custer County 1-3 and Del Norte 0-3. The team has several games now to finish out the regular season and will be looking to get more wins to guarantee their playoff spot. These games will be against Sanford on 10/24, Dolores on 10/24, Trinidad on 10/25, Gunnison on 10/28 and Ouray on 11/1.

Stat leaders for the Titans are Hailey Huresky with 26 total blocks, 22 serving aces, 130 digs, 109 kills and 230 receptions, Maryn Prichett with 9 total blocks, Haley Roberts with 6 total blocks, 20 serving aces, 170 digs, 77 kills and 208 receptions, Mia O’Neil with 33 serving aces, 231 digs, 297 kills and 363 receptions, Mylee Clifton with 244 assists, and Lanaea Clifton with 138 assists.

36. Loveland Classical

The Lions are right at the edge of the playoff bubble, currently sitting as the last team in at 36 in the seeding index. Loveland Classical is 10-9 overall on the season with a 9-1 league record and are 2nd in the Foothills league. The team is on a 5 game winning streak, their most recent wins being over Nederland 3-0, STEMSHR 3-0 and DCA 3-1. The Lions have one game left against Highland on 10/27 before they enter a league tournament on 10/30-11/1. The team will need to win as many of these games as possible to ensure they don’t fall out of playoff contention.
