CLASS 1A VOLLEYBALL REPORT – WEEKEND

The second to last weekend of the regular season once again has several of the top teams making a final push towards either hosting a regional or just getting into the field. The rankings used in this report come from the most recent CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index.

FRIDAY

#3 MCCLAVE (17-2) VS HOLLY (8-13)

It’s been more than a week since McClave swept Walsh in the last action for the Lady Cardinals. They gave up a total of 27 points in that win. Avery Hemphill (14) and Abrielle Gomez (13) combined for 27 kills in the match. Holly has already split a pair of contests this week, falling to Wiley in five sets on Tuesday and beating Kim/Branson on Wednesday in three. Natalia Garrido tallied 21 digs in the loss to Wiley, and Anayi Cerros added 19. The win on Wednesday snapped a five-match losing streak for the Lady Wildcats.

#5 STRATTON (15-4) AT #9 PRAIRIE (15-4)

Stratton locked up the Union Pacific title on Tuesday by beating 2A #15 Burlington in five sets. Sophia Isenbart went over the 1000 career kill mark in the match, hammering down 23. Kinsleigh Brachtenbach added 16, and Camory Wedel had eight to go with 25 assists. The Lady Eagles enter the weekend on an eight-match winning streak. Prairie suffered a three-set loss to 3A #7 Sterling on Tuesday, giving the Lady Mustangs their second loss in three outings. They were competitive in stepping up two classifications, falling 15-25, 22-25, and 21-25.

#8 HI-PLAINS (14-5) VS #18 LONE STAR (14-7)

Hi-Plains won a pair of five-setters late last week, taking down #21 Akron and 2A Haxtun on consecutive nights. Cambria Seaman had 22 kills in the first of those two wins, and did it one better with 23 in the latter. Brianna Rueb tallied 31 total kills, and Addison Henschel put away 21. Lone Star had a night filled with milestones on Thursday when the Lady Longhorns swept Weldon Valley. Paityn Forry and Jade Kuntz both reached the 1000 dig mark for their careers, and Audrey Wade collected her 100th career solo block. The winner takes second place in the YWKC league.

#12 PLATEAU VALLEY (19-1) VS 2A RANGELY (10-10)

The winning streak for Plateau Valley reached nine on Tuesday when the Cowgirls handed Grand Valley a 3-0 sweep. They allowed a total of 33 points in the win. Rangely got a pair of wins last weekend, beating North Park in four and then going the distance to take down Olathe. Rylee Kenney and Isabella Cox served five aces apiece for the Lady Panthers in the five-set win over Olathe.

SATURDAY

#2 MERINO (17-2) AT #5 STRATTON

After suffering a pair of losses last Saturday at the Sterling tournament, Merino bounced back by sweeping Caliche on Tuesday. Jaylyn Lynch and Jade Powell picked up 13 and 11 kills, respectively, and Kya Piel recorded 28 digs.

#7 SARGENT (17-1) AT 2A PEYTON (7-13)

Sargent rides a seven-match winning streak into Saturday’s match, and the Lady Farmers have only dropped one set in the stretch. They swept Trinidad on Thursday, giving up 36 total points. Peyton has lost two matches this week, falling to Byers in four on Tuesday and then getting swept by Swink the following night.

#8 HI-PLAINS VS NORTH PARK (3-18)

North Park lost two four-setters last weekend, falling to Rangely and Hayden in back-to-back outings. Jenna Sessions had 10 kills in the latter of those two defeats, and Miah Andrew and Magdalena Moya both added seven.

#10 EVANGEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY (15-4) VS COTOPAXI (9-9)

ECA sees its first action since falling to Pikes Peak Christian last Thursday. Ellie Wagner had 22 kills in that four-set loss, and Mia Castro added 13. Cotopaxi also enters the match off a loss, as the Lady Pirates were handed a five-set setback by Sangre de Cristo on Tuesday. Hayden Eggleston put down 22 kills in the loss. As a team, Cotopaxi tallied 198 digs, 44 by Sophie Eggleston, 38 by Kyla Espino, 36 from H. Eggleston, and 32 by Violet Jacoby.

#11 PIKES PEAK CHRISTIAN (20-2) AT MIAMI-YODER (6-14)

The Lady Eagles took their winning streak to an even dozen with a sweep of Cripple Creek-Victor on Thursday. Going back to last week’s win over ECA that clinched the Black Forest title for PPC, Megan Ferguson put 15 kills on the stat sheet, and Eden Lopez tallied 30 digs. Miami-Yoder lost its second straight match on Tuesday, as the Lady Buffs fell to Thomas MacLaren School in three. They’ve lost six of their last seven.

SIMLA TRIANGULAR

The Simla Triangular, hosted by the #4 team in Class 2A, features a pair of highly-ranked teams from 1A. Top-ranked Fleming and #15 Cheraw with join the Lady Bear Cubs in the event.
