Class 1A Football Preview-Week Ten

We use the CHSAA Seeding Index and go thru the top matchups of Week Nine.  Final Week of Regular Season Action.  The 7 games selected will have a big impact on the Playoff Picture!  Rankings used are the CHSAA Seeding Index.

#5 Centauri (7-1) vs #9 Monte Vista (6-2), Fridy at 6pm

Playoff Implications/What is on the Line…Winner of this games secures the Southern Peaks League Title.  Both teams should make the playoffs, but seeding will be impacted based on this game.

Last Week…Centauri improved to 7-1 on the season and 4-0 in league play with a 55 to 6 win over Trinidad last week.  It was a dominant performance by Centauri racking up 378 yards of offense in the win.  The rushing attack led the way with 345 yards on the ground.  WR Carson Shawcroft led all rushers with 69 yards and 1 rushing TD while also catching a TD as well.  RB Marcos Atencio had the most rushing attempts with 5 while rushing for 51 yards.  Defensively the Falcons flew around forcing 5 total turnovers in the game highlighted by Cannon Thomas getting an INT and Fumble Recovery.  Drake Gallardo also pitched in with an Fumble Recovery and Forced Fumble.  The Falcons were led in tackles by Spencer Smith with 12 Tackles and 1 TFL and Marcos Atencio pitched in with another 9 tackles and 1 TFL.

Monte Vista improved to 6-2 on the season and 4-0 in league play with a 55 to 6 win over Ignacio last week.  Offensively Monte Vista got started quickly and never looked back.  Monte Vista had over 350 yards of total offense led by the rushing attack with 226 yards.  QB Manny Jiron was efficient in his passing going 4 of 4 for 144 yards and 2 TDs.  RB Judah Howe had a breakout game rushing 5 times for 97 yards and 3 TDs.  WR Azariah Hurtado also had a solid game catching 2 passes for 74 yards and a TD.  Defensively Monte Vista forced 3 turnovers in the game highlighted by a pair of pick 6’s by Kelby Mondragon.  Monte Vista was led on defense by Chayse Bouet (11 tackles) and Mason Mondragon (10 tackles & 1 TFL). 

Last Year…Monte Vista defeated Centauri, 36 to 26.

#1 Buena Vista (8-0) at #6 C.S Christian (6-2), Friday at 7pm

Playoff Implications/What is on the Line…The winner of this game will win the Tri-Peaks League Title.  Both teams are playoff bound but seeding is on the line. Both teams could both host a first round game.

Last Week…Buena Vista improved to 8-0 on the season and 4-0 in league play with a 46 to 0 win over Peyton last week.  Buena Vista had a big second quarter and put the game away with running clock in the third quarter.  Offensively Buena Vista had a solid day racking up 245 yards of total offense.  QB Reed Lundy led the passing attack with 56 yards passing, 56 yards rushing, and 3 Total TDs.  WR Caleb Pierce continues to have a solid season and, in this game, caught two passes for 41 yards and a TD.  The rushing attack was powered by Tucker Montoya who rushed 5 times for 69 yards and a TD and RB Casen Pridemore pitched in with 6 rushes for 51 yards and a TD.  Defensively Buena Vista forced two turnovers in the game both of which turned into defensive TDs by Carter Stromer & Abel Flowers.  The Demons were led in tackles by Casen Pridemore (10 tackles & 3 TFL) and Carter Stromer (7 tackles & 4 TFL).

C.S Christian improved to 6-2 on the season and 3-0 in league play with a 27-0 win over Rye last week.  It was a defensive slugfest thru 3 quarters with C.S Christian scoring 17 unanswered points in the 4th quarter.  Christian Banks (12 tackles), Liam Smith (12 tackles), and Mikey Orawiec (11 tackles) led the C.S Christian defense with Luke Kerr forcing the lone sack in the game.  Offensively C.S Christian racked up over 300 yards of total offense.  QB Fisher Tenpas had another impressive game, throwing for 128 yards and 2 TDs.  WR Mikey Orawiec was the top target catching 4 passes for 95 yards and 1 TD.  RB Micah Akpata was the top rusher for the Lions, rushing 12 times for 72 yards and 1 TD.

Last Year…Buena Vista defeated C.S Christian 68 to 18 last year.

Series history… Buena Vista leads the series 11-5 over C.S Christian, since 2004

#9 Highland (6-2) vs #12 Platte Valley (4-4), Friday at 7pm

Playoff Implications/What is on the Line…Winner of this game wins the Central League Title.  Both teams should be in the playoff regardless of the results.  Both teams will look to improve their seeding with a win.

Last Week…Highland received a forfeit win over Jefferson last week.  That improved the Huskies to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in league play.  On the season it was been the rushing attack that has led the way for Highland racking up 1475 yards and 14 TDs.  RB Elijah Elder has led the ground attack with 551 yards and 3 TDs while RB Wyatt Chase has contributed with another 354 yards and 6 TDs.  QB Tyler Varra has been solid all season throwing for 543 yards, 11 TDs, and 1 INT while rushing for another 478 yards and 6 TDs.  Defensively Highland has forced 13 sacks on the season with Brogan Palmer leading the way with 5 sacks.  Wyatt Chase (89 tackles & 14 TFL) and Brogan Palmer (52 tackles & 14 TFL) lead the Huskies defense.

Platte Valley had a bye last week but are coming off a huge 39 to 18 win over Manual two weeks ago.  The win kept them in the league title race, and they improved to 4-4 on the season.  Platte Valley has not posted stats since the 5th game of the season.  They are balanced in their offensive attack with the passing attack racking up 818 yards and the rushing attack with 501 yards.  QB Reegan Edstrom leads the passing attack with 720 yards, 10 TDs, and 5 INTS.  WR Kaden Tucker is the top target catching 16 passes for 272 yards and 6 TDs.  RB Mason Hunt leads the rushing attack with 269 yards and 3 TDs while RB Ben Cockroft has pitched in with another 212 yards and 2 TDs.  No defensive stats have been input for Platte Valley.

Last Year…Platte Valley defeated Highland 15 to 14 last year.

#7 Forge Christian (7-1) vs #15 Denver Christian (4-4), Friday at 7pm

Playoff Implications/What is on the Line…The winner of this games wins the Frontier League Title.  Forge Christian is a lock for the playoffs sitting inside the top 8 and in a spot to host with a win.  Denver Christian is on the bubble sitting at #15 and need the win to lock up their playoff spot.  A loss and Denver Christian will be hoping the math falls their way.

Last Week… Forge Christian improved to 7-1 on the season and 3-0 in league play with a 38 to 0 win over Platte Canyon.  Offensively Forge Christian had a big day racking up over 370 yards of total offense.  QB Jack Widdifield had another solid outing going 6 of 9 for 156 yards and a TD.  WR Treysen Eye was the top target catching 2 passes for 81 yards.  RB Quetin Torres had another impactful day rushing 4 times for 152 yards and 3 TDs while catching 3 passes for 68 yards and a TD.  Defensively Forge Christian forced 1 turnover a fumble recovery by Raleigh Cleveland and had a sack by Treysen Eye.  The Fury defense was led by Joshua Fale (16 tackles & 2 TFL) and Sammy Granillo (13 tackles & 4 TFL).

Denver Christian improved to 4-4 on the season and 3-0 in league play with a 49 to 22 win over Flatirons Academy.  This win propelled Denver Christian into the top 16 of the Seeding Index and a shot for the league title.  Denver Christian had a huge offensive day racking up 396 yards of total offense, 315 coming from the rushing attack.  RB Quinn Barkema had a big day rushing 14 times for 153 yards and 3 rushing TDs and RB Elijah Whitfield contributed with 75 yards and 1 TD.  QB Cole McCabe has pitched in offensively with 81 yards and 1 passing TD.  Defensively Denver Christian forced 3 turnovers in the highlighted by a pick 6 by Pete Smith.  The Thunder were led on defense by Quinn Barkema (13 tackles) and Cole McCabe (11 tackles & 1 TFL).

Last Year…Forge Christian defeated Denver Christian, 42 to 0

#2 Limon vs #16 Yuma (4-4), Friday at 7pm

Playoff Implications/What is on the Line…Limon is your league champion already but are looking to lock up the #2 overall seed.  Yuma has much more on the line sitting at #16 in the CHSAA Seeding Index.  A win would lock them into the playoffs, but a loss makes things much more interesting and they will be hoping they can hold off Manual or Flatirons Academy for the final spot.

Last Week… Limon won the North Central League Title with a 14 to 0 win over Burlington last week.  This was a defensive battle with Limon pitching the shutout and holding Burlington to their lowest run amount of the season.  Limon defensively held Burlington to just 42 yards of rushing while forcing 3 sacks and 1 INT.  Zac Carr, Keagan Mellott, and Carlos Nunez each had a sack in the game.  Limon was led in tackles by Dreison Davis (10 tackles) and Liam Yoder (9 tackles).  Offensively Limon found enough success to get two TDs across plus racked up 207 yards of total offense.  The rushing attack led the way for Limon, racking up 213 yards of rushing.  RB Jacob Jaklich led all rushers with 73 yards and 1 TD and RB Drey Tacha pitched in with 72 yards and 1 TD. 

Yuma dropped to 4-4 in the season and 1-3 in league play with a 51 to 13 loss to Wray.  Yuma is 1-4 in their last 5 games and is currently on a 2-game losing streak they would love to snap.  Yuma against Wray did find some success on the ground rushing for 205 yards in the game.  QB Iann Duran led the offense with 9 yards passing while rushing for 134 yards and 2 TDs.  RB Marvin Duarte also pitched in with 53 yards.  Defensively Yuma will look to make adjustments this week.  Marvin Duarte (7 tackles), Iann Duran (6 tackles), and Jesus Gordo (6 tackles) will look to get the Outlaws back on track.

#18 Flatirons Academy (4-4) vs #24 Prospect Ridge (3-5), Friday at 6:30pm

Playoff Implications/What is on the Line…Flatirons Academy is on the bubble and looking to snag one of the final playoff spots.  Flatirons Academy needs a win plus some help to get into the top 16.  Prospect Ridge is out of playoff contention but could play spoiler and end their season with a huge win.

Last Week… Flatirons Academy dropped to 4-4 on the season and 1-2 in league play with a 49 to 22 loss to Denver Christian.  Flatirons Academy is 1-3 in their last four games.  On the season Flatirons Academy is a run first team racking up 1409 yards rushing.  RB Zeke Friedman leads the rushing attack with 584 yards and 3 TDs while RB Elijah Ricca has contributed 273 yards and 3 TDs. QB Caleb Doughty has played well this season passing for 649 yards and 7 TDs while rushing for 507 yards and 9 TDs.  Defensively it’s Ryker Clubb (47 tackles) and Luis Mandl (37 tackles & 13 TFL) leads the way for the Bison. 

Prospect Ridge Academy dropped to 3-5 on the season with a 30-16 non-league loss to Cedaredge.  The loss is the 4th straight loss for Prospect Ridge.  On the season it’s the passing attack that is leading the way.  QB Emerson Mallon is having a solid season passing for 1266 yards, 7 INTs, and 15 TDs.  WR Hayden Foster is the main target catching 17 passes for 335 yards and 5 TDs.  RB Ryan Knopf leads the rushing attack with 324 yards and 3 TDs.  Defensively Prospect Ridge has 9 sacks on the season highlighted by Sean Graham who has 3 on the season.  Wyatt Clubb (46 tackles) and Toby Barnett (42 tackles) leads the Miners defensively.   

Last Year…Flatirons Academy defeated Prospect Ridge 41 to 8.

#3 Burlington (6-2) at #13 Holyoke (4-4), Friday at 7pm

Playoff Implications/What is on the Line…Burlington is looking to lock up a top 5 seed in the playoffs, and a win should do just that.  Holyoke on the other hand is on the bubble at #13.  Holyoke should get into the playoffs regardless of the result, but a win would greatly improve their seed.

Last Week…Burlington dropped to 6-2 on the season and 2-2 in league play with a 14-0 loss to Limon.  This was a strong defensive effort from the Cougars holding Limon to just 14 points.  Burlington in the game forced 1 turnover an INT by Anthony Estrada and forced a sack by Garrett Rogers.  Burlington defensively was led by Darian McDonough who had 12 tackles while Anthony Estrada pitched in with another 11 tackles.  Offensively Burlington was held to a season low 42 yards of total offense.  Look for RB Jason Saucedo and QB Scout Humrich to lead that charge.

Holyoke improved to 4-4 on the season and 2-2 in league play with a 16 to 2 win over Wiggins.  That win more than likely secured the Dragons a spot in the playoffs.  Holyoke in the win over Wiggins turned to their rushing attack which racked up 154 yards.  QB Colby Weber led the offense for Holyoke racking up 86 yards passing and 1 TD while racking up 124 yards on the ground.  WR Elbin Padilla had 4 catches for 45 yards and WR Riley Powell pitched in with 23 yards and a TD.  Defensively Holyoke had a good game pitching the shutout while forcing two sacks by Brandon Bustillos and a defensive TD by Kaden Herman.  Holyoke was led in tackles by Jacob Quintana (14 tackles) and Gustavo Goytia (13 tackles).

Last Year…Burlington defeated Holyoke, 35 to 12
