Class 2A Volleyball Weekly Review and Preview

With the last week of the season upon us, and a handful of teams done playing for the regular season, we take a look at the top 12 teams in the CHSAA Seeding Index who are likely to host in first round of the postseason. We also look at the last two teams in the playoff bubble and the first two teams outside of the bubble and see if they are playing to secure their position, or hoping other teams fall so that their spots can be taken.

Simla

This week Simla takes the number one spot in the CHSAA Seeding Index with a current overall record of 20-2, a league record of 6-0 and the 1st place spot in the Black Forest League. The Cubs are on a 15 game winning streak, beating their most recent opponents Fowler 3-0, Fleming 3-1, Cheraw 3-0 and Monument Academy 3-0. Simla has one last game in the regular season against Sedgwick County on 11/1 and will be looking to grab that win to hold their position into the postseason.

Holyoke

The Dragons fall from the number one spot into the number 2 spot in the seeding index. The team lost two games in the last week of play, falling to Sedgwick County 0-3 and Wiggins 2-3. Holyoke is now 18-4 overall on the season with a 5-3 league record and are 4th in the Lower Platte League. The team has one game remaining for the regular season against Burlington on 10/31 and they will be looking to get the win and hold their rankings for the upcoming postseason.

Lyons

Lyons is on a four-game winning streak, winning three of these games in the last week of play, beating Belleview Christian 3-0, Union Colony Prep 3-0 and SkyView Academy 3-0. The Lions are now 18-2 overall on the season, 11-0 in league play, 1st in the Mile High League and 3rd in the CHSAA Seeding Index. Lyons will be playing in tournament play this weekend to end the regular season, where wins will help solidify the teams’ playoff position, but losses raise the potential of another team jumping them in the rankings.

Denver Christian

Denver Christian are 18-4 overall on the season, 6-3 in league play, 4th in the Metro league and are currently 4th in the seeding index. The Thunder extended their win streak from 6 to 8 in the last week of play, beating Peak to Peak 3-1 and The Academy 3-2. The team will be looking to end the regular season with a win and a 9 game winning streak heading to the postseason and will be facing Kent Denver tonight.

Dolores

The Bears wrap up their regular season journey with a 22-1 overall record, an 11-1 league record, 1st in the San Juna Basin, 5th in the seeding index and on a 12 game win streak. To end the regular season, Dolores beat Telluride, Crested Butte and Ignacio 3-0 and Sanford 3-1. Now the team waits for the end of the week to see if they finish where they currently are in the seeding index or if other teams give them the chance to move up a spot or two.

Sanford

The Mustangs are currently 17-3 overall on the season with a 6-0 league record, are 1st in the Southern Peaks League and 6th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. Sanford beat Crested Butte 3-0 to bring their win streak to 5 in a row, but it was snapped when the team fell to Dolores 1-3. The team was able to bounce back and beat Custer County 3-0 and will be looking to continue winning to finish the regular season and head into the playoffs. The Mustangs’ last game of the season will be against Monte Vista tonight.

Sedgwick County

Sedgwick County comes into the last week of the regular season on a 3-game win streak, a 16-5 overall record, a 5-2 league record, sitting at 3rd in the Lower Platte league and 7th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The last three games the Cougars won were against Holyoke 3-0, Akron 3-0, and Heritage Christian 3-1. Sedgwick County will end their regular season facing Haxtun on 10/31 and Simla on 11/1 where they team will be looking for a couple of big wins which could help the team move up the seeding index.

Wiggins

Wiggins is sitting at 8 in the seeding index with a 15-7 overall record, a 6-1 league record, and are 2nd in the Lower Platte League. The Tigers were able to beat Briggsdale 3-0 and Holyoke 3-2 in the last week of play. The team will be looking to keep their success rolling and will play Wray tonight and will be looking for another win to add to their record as they go into the postseason.

Swink

Swink is 19-4 overall on the season, 8-0 in league play, 1st in the Santa Fe League, and 9th in the seeding index. The Lions are on a 12-game winning streak after beating Peyton 3-0 and Fowler 3-0. The regular season is complete for the team so now all they have to do is wait and see if they get the opportunity to jump teams in the rankings or if they will remain at 9.

Buena Vista

Buena Vista rounds out the top ten currently in the CHSAA Seeding Index with a 17-4 overall record, 5-1 in league play, and are 2nd in the Southern Peaks League. In the most recent game for the Demons, the team beat South Park 3-0 and will be looking to keep their streak going as they take on Middle Park and Meeker in tournament play on 10/31. The team will be looking to get wins and see if they can wiggle up the rankings and not let lower teams sneak in.

Vail Christian

The Saints are currently 17-4 overall on the season with a 9-0 league record, are 1st in the Western Slope League and are 11th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The last two games won by Vail Christian were against West Grand 3-0 and Hayden 3-0. The team will be looking to get their last win of the regular season against North Park on 11/1 and to carry that momentum into the postseason.

Ignacio

The Bobcats are currently the last team that would have the privilege of hosting the first round of the playoffs if standings remain. The team is currently 12th in the seeding index, 18-4 overall on the season, 11-1 in league play, and are 2nd in the San Juan Basin. To end the regular season, Ignacio will play Sargent tonight and will be looking to win to hold their position as hosts going into the postseason.

Soroco

The Rams are towards the bottom of the playoff cutoff with only one team behind them at 35 in the seeding index.  Soroco is currently 11-7 overall with a 5-4 league record, are 5th in the Western Slope league and will play a game on 10/31 against Plateau Valley to end their regular season. Soroco will be looking to win this game to secure their position inside of the playoff bubble or even have the potential to move up if other teams allow.

Loveland Classical

The Lions are sitting as the last team into the playoffs right now as the 36 seed in the seeding index with a 10-10 overall record, a 9-1 league record and in 2nd in the Foothills league. Loveland Classical split their last week of play, beating DCA 3-1 but falling to Highland 2-3. The good news for the team is that they still have a few games left this week and will be looking to win these games to solidify their spot in the playoffs. These games will be against TCPA today and then Tournament play to end the regular season.

Center

The Vikings are currently the first team on the outside of the playoff bubble at 37 in the seeding index. Center is currently 11-10 overall on the season, 2-4 in league play, and 5th in the Southern Peaks League with a single game left on their schedule against Creede tonight. The team is on a three game win streak, beating Trinidad 3-0, South Park 3-1 and Olathe 3-1, and will be looking to get this last win and hopefully squeeze into the postseason.

St. Mary’s

Sitting at 38 in the seeding index, St. Mary’s is currently done with the regular season and could be done with the season as a whole if other teams don’t fall. The Pirates are 12-11 overall on the season, 5-7 in league play and 8th in the Tri-Peaks league. The team lost their game against The Vanguard School 0-3, but was able to get a handful of wins to end the season against TCSS 2-0, Thomas MacLaren School 2-1, Eagle Ridge Academy 2-1, GVCA, 2-0, and Ellicott 3-0. The team now has to wait to see their final spot in seeding to see if they made the playoffs.
