Class 2A Wrestling Report Week 1

Jumping right into the 2A wrestling action, we will look at team rankings and what these teams will be bringing to the mat this season and we will also look at where some of these teams will be taking their talent this week 1.

A few differences here between the two rankings but the core perennial power houses all mentioned.  Let’s take a closer look at them.

Colorado 2A Wrestling Preseason Team Spotlights

Cedaredge

The Bruins return a powerful core. Junior Cash Martinez (state champ at 120 last year) and senior Jared Roberts (state champ at 106) headline, with sophomore Liam Martin (5th at 113 as a freshman) adding depth. Senior Kolter Mann (5th at 190) and heavyweight Travis Gill (qualifier at 285) round out a balanced lineup.  Cedaredge has the firepower to defend its crown if younger wrestlers step up.

Highland

Coach Varra’s squad is loaded. Senior Tyler Varra (runner‑up at 138), senior Wyatt Chase (2nd at 175), and senior Korbin Hoke (4th at 120) headline. Junior Carter Jensen (6th at 126) adds depth. Sophomore Braiden Sidwell (1 away at 106) is another rising star. Highland has the talent to peak at the right time.

North Fork

The program continues to shine. Junior Bronson Hall (3rd at 120), senior Derrick Sievertsen (3rd at 144), and senior Braeden Flores (5th at 150) lead the charge. Sophomore Tallin Hall (incoming freshman standout) and junior Bo Eves (qualifier at 190) add depth.  With a strong freshman class filling gaps, North Fork is positioned for another deep run.

Rocky Ford

Tradition defines the Meloneers. Senior Emilio Vallejos (3rd at 106), senior Tyler Fehrenbach (qualifier at 144), senior Julius Martinez (qualifier at 150), senior Colton Bruna (qualifier at 175), senior Cayson VanDyk (4th at 215), and senior Omar Ocana (3rd at 285) headline a roster with proven podium potential.  Rocky Ford’s depth across weights makes them a dangerous contender.

Sedgwick County/Fleming

This co‑op program blends toughness with balance. Sophomore Nathan Gonzales (2nd at 106), junior Cooper Edson (1 away at 113), junior Cash Campbell (qualifier at 120), sophomore Austin Knox (1 away at 132), junior Owen Harris (1 away at 150), and junior Levi Reichman (qualifier at 175) will all look to contribute.  Sedgwick County/Fleming has the pieces to surprise at state.

Buena Vista

The Demons bring star power. Senior Tucker Montoya (1 away at 144), senior Abel Flowers (5th at 175), senior Carter Stromer (3rd at 190), and junior Cason Pridemore (qualifier at 215) headline.  Buena Vista’s blend of football toughness and wrestling talent makes them dangerous late in the season.

Limon

The Badgers lean on their big men. Bringing back, Senior Zach Carr (1 away at 175), senior Dreisen Davis (3rd at 215), junior Spoke Carr (1 away at 285), and junior Carlos Nunez (qualifier at 165).  With multiple upper‑weight scorers, Limon remains firmly in the mix.

Trinidad

The Miners return balance; Junior Santino Sanchez (qualifier at 106), senior Matthew Garduno (qualifier at 157), senior Dominic Edwards (qualifier at 175), and senior AJ Bowman (6th at 285).  Trinidad’s depth across weights could push them into the top six.

Wray

The Eagles remain formidable. Senior Austin Collins (state champ at 132, Fargo All‑American) leads the way. Junior Lance Buoy (1 away at 106) and senior Brody Richards (1A at 165) add scoring.  Wray’s tradition and returning stars make them a top program.

Ignacio

Small but mighty, Ignacio has a strong core. Senior Aven Bourriague (4th at 106 in 2024), senior Zane Pontine (qualifier at 157), and senior Lincoln DeKay (runner‑up at 165) headline.  With multiple proven scorers, Ignacio is back in the top ten conversation.

Meeker

The Cowboys bring podium level talent with junior Koy Weber (runner‑up at 126), freshman Kael Overton (incoming MS champ), senior Drake Jones (qualifier at 165), and junior Orion Musser (qualifier at 157).  Meeker’s tradition and stars keep them relevant in the team race.

Burlington

The Cougars return upper‑weight strength. Junior Scout Humrich (qualifier at 144), senior Anthony Estrada (runner‑up at 215), and junior Garrett Rogers (qualifier at 285) headline.  Burlington’s lineup has the pieces to climb into the top tier.

Monte Vista

The Pirates continue to develop talent. Junior Elijah Baumgartner (1 away at 132), senior Matthew Rodriguez (6th at 113), and senior Jon Enderle (5th in regionals at 138) headline.  Monte Vista’s roster could surprise with a few breakout performances.

Fowler Grizzly Invitational – Fowler Jr/Sr High School

Teams attending: Custer County, Del Norte, Fowler, Las Animas, Monte Vista, Primero, Rye, Simla, Swink, Walsenburg

Buena Vista Demon Duals – Buena Vista High School

Teams attending: Peyton, Trinidad, West Grand

Chuck Annand Invitational – Akron High School

Teams attending: Akron, Byers, County Line, Crowley County, Highland, Holly, La Veta, Limon, Merino, Sedgwick County/Fleming, Wiggins, Yuma

Quite a few 2A teams congregating at a couple tournaments, should provide us with some early season clarity.
