
CLASS 1A GIRLS BASKETBALL REPORT – WEEK TWO

One week into the season and three of the top-10 teams in the MHPR poll already have a loss. Teams from the High Plains League currently occupy the top two spots in the rankings.

#1 MCCLAVE (1-0)
The Lady Cardinals used a stifling defense in their 50-31 win at Idalia in a rematch between the two finalists from last year. McClave held the Lady Wolves to just four points in the first half. Abrielle Gomez led the way with 16 points, and Addison Vallejos tacked on 11 points and nine steals. The Lady Cards will travel to 3A #3 Yuma on Friday, and 1A #4 Fleming on Saturday.
#2 EADS (2-0)
Defense has fueled Eads early in the season, as the Lady Eagles have allowed a total of 42 points in their first two games. Anna Wollert had 18 points and seven steals in a 56-23 season-opening victory over #8 Hi-Plains, and 10 Lady Eagles scored in their 52-19 win over Stanton County on Tuesday as part of the Border Wars. Kara Wilson, Reece Barnett, and Jordynn Turcotte all scored nine points apiece. Eads completes the Border Wars this weekend, starting with Greeley County on Friday. The Lady Eagles finish with Elkhart on Saturday.
#3 STRATTON (1-0)
Stratton is also involved in the Border Wars, and the Lady Eagles got the season off with a 54-48 victory over Greeley County on Tuesday. They have Stanton County on Friday, and Syracuse on Saturday.
#4 FLEMING (1-1)
Brooke Schaefer hit five three-pointers and recorded 28 points, five steals, and four assists in Fleming’s 65-34 win over Haxtun to open the season. Ciana Lousberg tacked on 12 points in the win. The Lady Wildcats turned around and dropped a 49-37 decision to 2A #6 Sedgwick County. Schaefer had another strong outing, pumping in 18 points and snagging nine steals. Lousberg was again in double figures, adding 10 points. Fleming will host 2A Holyoke on Thursday, and then host McClave on Saturday.
#5 CALICHE (3-0)
Caliche started the season by winning the title at the Carlile Classic last weekend, beating #6 Prairie 41-40 in the opener, and dominating Lone Star 62-35 for the crown. The Lady Buffs followed that up with another big win on Tuesday, as they took down Weldon Valley by a 62-21 count. Caliche hosts Front Range Baptist on Friday.
#6 PRAIRIE (1-1)
Prairie finished third in the Carlile Classic at Peetz last weekend, dropping the opener to Caliche 41-40, and then taking out the hosts, 56-38. This weekend is the Prairie Classic, where the Lady Mustangs will start things on Friday against Lone Star.
#7 EVANGEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY (2-0)
ECA spent last weekend at the Cheraw tournament, where the Lady Eagles picked up a pair of victories to earn the championship of the event. They began by taking down 2A #10 Byers 48-32 in the opening round. The Lady Eagles led 39-19 after three frames. They got past the hosts for the title, beating Cheraw 46-40. ECA visits Genoa-Hugo/Karval on Friday and will host Kiowa on Saturday.
#8 HI-PLAINS (2-1)
Cambria Seaman put together 13 points and three steals for Hi-Plains in its 56-23 loss to #2 Eads to open the season. The Lady Patriots bounced back from that defeat with 41-21 win over Wiley last Saturday. Hi-Plains made it consecutive wins with a 34-20 victory at Kiowa. They will head to Granada on Thursday, and then make the trek to #9 Briggsdale on Saturday.
#9 BRIGGSDALE (3-0)
Briggsdale was busy last week, playing three games in as many days. The Lady Falcons got started last Thursday with a 54-30 win over Dayspring Christian, behind 19 points from Bailey Loyd. Claire Brown tacked on 18, and Presleigh Herrick added 12. Loyd went for 18 more points in Friday’s 41-24 win over Loveland PRC, and Brown tallied 10 points. The duo combined for 23 in a 32-30 victory over Genoa-Hugo/Karval on Saturday. Brown led with a dozen, and Loyd added 11. The Lady Falcons will host #8 Hi-Plains on Saturday.
#10 SPRINGFIELD (2-0)
Springfield kept the top trophy from the R.L. Ballard Invitational at home last weekend, beating Sublette (KS) and South Baca to take the title. Cobi Mackey poured in 23 points and claimed six steals in the opening round win last Thursday. BriLynn Jackson tacked on 11 points. Mackey tallied 22 points on Saturday against South Baca, and Jackson finished with 14, but it was Jersey Speck who stole the show. The sophomore recorded 31 points. The Lady Longhorns got their first win in Ark Valley play on Tuesday, as they beat Wiley 52-13.They are off until next week’s Lamar Holiday Tournament.
