Class 2A Boys Basketball Weekly Review and Preview

As the season gets underway in the new year, we look at the teams who are currently sitting in the top 16 spots of the seeding index. But with more than half of games yet to be played, this year’s top spots are up for grab as competition kicks off.

Simla

Simla kicked off their season with a 3-1 overall record, beating Belleview Christian 69-24, Limon 65-51, Denver Christian 60-51, but fell to Strasburg 52-76. The Cubs are looking to get back on the winning streak and will be taking on Byers to start the new year on 1/9 and then the team will go to Yuma on 1/10.

Leading the stat board so far this season are Tatum Kocerha with 95 points, 22 assists, 47 rebounds, and 7 steals, Evan Guy with 63 points, 9 assists, and 7 steals, Connor Maranville with 41 points and 36 rebounds, Ethan Kissam with 11 assists and 6 steals, and Ty Stanko with 26 rebounds.

Twin Peaks Classical Academy

The Timberwolves are off to a strong start to their season with a 9-0 overall record. The team so far this season got wins over Front Range Christian 68-55, STEMSHR 69-50, GVCA 41-37, ACA 63-47, Denver Academy 70-46, Nederland 74-28, ACANC 61-32, Denver Academy of Torah 60-36, and Nederland 60-20. The team will be looking to add more wins to their record and keep their perfect record intact and will play next week on 1/14 against Two Roads Charter School.

Stat leaders for Twin Peaks Classical are Matthew Wurth with 104 points, 126 rebounds, and 25 steals, David Bosire with 91 points, 23 assists, 57 rebounds, and 22 steals, Angel Ortega with 87 points, Trenton Rodriguez with 15 assists, Boston Renaud with 54 rebounds, and Jace Ross with 19 steals.

Sanford

The Mustangs are off to a hot start to the season with an overall 8-0 record. So far, Sanford has got wins over Salida 66-62, Escalante 49-38, Swink 47-9, Del Norte 54-17, La Junta 49-39, West Grand 59-43, Sierra Grande 52-47 and Mesa Vista 45-43. The team will be looking to continue their success and get more wins added to their record now in January as they will play Crested Butte on 1/10. They will then kick off next week’s games on 1/13 against Buena Vista.

Byers

The Bulldogs have started their season off with a 6-1 overall record, starting off with all wins in December but losing their first game of 2026. Byers was able to beat Sierra Grande 66-61, ECA 57-49, Bennett 75-59, Lyons 69-44, DCA 65-36, and Kiowa 57-16 but lost to Wiggins 64-67. The team will be looking to add more wins to their record and get momentum going in 2026 and will face Simla on 1/9 and Denver Christian on 1/13.

Golden View Classical Academy

GVCA kicked off their season with a 5-1 overall and 1-0 league start. The Sentinels were able to get wins over Lyons 66-63, Ascent Classical 56-19, Caprock Academy 55-29, Front Range Christian 60-53, and AWCPA 76-44. The lone loss for the team came from TPCA where GVCA lost 37-41. The team will be looking to get more wins on their record as they will take on Denver Waldorf on 1/8 and then the team will start games next week against Nederland on 1/12.

Stat leaders for GVCA are Jacob Walker with 79 points, 20 assists, 29 rebounds, and 7 steals, Luke Chronowski with 67 points and 20 assists, George Hermanson with 46 points, and 42 rebounds, Huck Hale with 10 assists and 10 steals, and Levi Piepergerdes with 27 rebounds and 13 steals.

Trinidad

The Miners are off on a 6-0 start, beating Des Moines 57-37, Kim/Branson 57-54, Raton 62-50, Centennial 53-39, Raton via FF, and Aguilar 51-2. The team will be looking to see if they can maintain their perfect record and will face Kim/Branson on 1/10.

Leading the stat board for Trinidad are Cole Gegelman with 68 points, 8 assists, and 19 steals, Jeremiah Romero with 55 points, 9 assists, 16 rebounds and 27 steals, Xavier Garcia with 55 points, Isaiah Moreno with 7 assists, 38 rebounds, and 18 steals, and Ayzaiah Santistevan with 17 rebounds.

Swallows Charter Academy

SCA is currently 6-2 overall on the season and 1-0 in league play. The Spartans have so far beat Custer County 50-48, Cotopaxi 48-17, Center 62-45, Frontier Academy 69-57, Fowler 64-50 and Crowley County 65-38. The teams’ losses were against Pueblo Centennial 64-72 and Florence 34-38. SCA will be looking to get more wins added to their record and the main part of the season starts and will play Liberty Tree Academy on 1/9 and Kiowa on 1/13.

Leading the stat board for the team are Mike Vazquez with 87 points, 56 rebounds, and 17 steals, Charles Perry with 81 points and 21 assists, Andrew Breedlove with 80 points, Karson Kleven with 32 assists, Christian Garcia with 28 assists, 66 rebounds, and 22 steals, and Elias Garcia with 35 rebounds and 14 steals.

Vail Christian

The Saints kicked off their season with a 4-2 start. Beating Cedaredge 78-76 in overtime, Telluride 63-43, Crested Butte 54-35, and Grand Valley 53-44. The two losses for the team came against Highland 43-73 and Nucla 44-55. Vail Christian will be looking to get more wins added to their record and start 2026 off with a win when they take on Vail Mountain on 1/9 and Buena Vista on 1/10. Then next week they will start the week off against Plateau Valley on 1/13.

Stat leaders for Vail Christian are Oliver Neumann with 93 points, 28 rebounds and 14 steals, Rayman Romanin with 60 points, 19 assists, and 12 steals, Wyatt Hansen with 49 points and 11 assists, Aiden O’Shaughnessy with 12 assists, Jack O’Shaugnessy with 37 rebounds, Brody Sterkel with 24 rebounds, and Charlie Neumann with 12 steals.

Heritage Christian

The Eagles are starting their season off with a 3-3 overall record, beating Otis 55-46, Akron 61-39 and DCA 75-40 but stared their season off with three losses to Liberty Common 42-73, Forge Christian 62-81, and Wiggins 32-45. Heritage Christian will be looking add more wins to their record and will take on SkyView Academy on 1/9.

Leading the stat board for the Eagles are Guede Wade with 92 points and 56 rebounds, Alec Lundy with 91 points, 23 assists, 42 rebounds and 18 steals, Isaiah Nevarez with 55 points and 16 steals, Eddie Packard with 18 assists and 12 steals, and Samuel Hanson with 13 assists and 22 rebounds.

Haxtun

Currently sitting in the number 10 spot in the seeding index, Haxtun started their season off with a 4-3 overall record. The Bulldogs were able to get wins over Fleming 56-49, Perkins County 61-50, DCA 63-49 and Holyoke 56-50 but lost to Highland 48-61 and Wiggins 34-63.  Haxtun will be looking to continue their success and get more wins added to their record as they will face Kimball on 1/9, Prairie on 1/10 and Otis on 1/13.

Leading the stat board for Haxtun is Chase Goddard with 118 points, 65 rebounds and 17 steals, Madden Larsen with 72 points, 15 assists, 27 rebounds and 12 steals, Colin Cone with 53 points and 45 rebounds, Jaxsen Schram with 20 assists, Kanin Koberstein with 19 assists and 17 steals.

Union Coloney Prep

Union Colony Prep start their season with a 4-2 overall record, falling to Front Range Christian 60-65 and Prairie 36-63, but beating ACANC 74-49, Weldon Valley 87-70, Denver Waldorf 64-58 and Dawson School 47-46. The Timberwolves will be looking to get a couple of wins added to their overall record and will play Clear Creek on 1/8 and will kick off next week against Flatirons Academy on 1/13.

Leading the teams’ stat board so far this season are Tanner Sarchet with 115 points, 32 assists, 66 rebounds, and 21 steals, Noah Herndon with 93 points, 18 assists, 21 rebounds, and 13 steals, Daniel Vazquez with 82 points and 22 steals, and Pablo Mendoza- Munoz with 19 assists and 58 rebounds.

Las Animas

The Trojans ended their 2025 portion of the season with a 4-2 overall record, getting wins over Aguilar 69-12, Arickaree 53-24, Elkhart 63-43, and SB (CO-OP) 53-13 abut fell to Syracuse 51-63 and Greely County 48-61. Las Animas will be looking to start 2026 off with a win and keep their momentum moving forward as they will face Ellicott on 1/10 and then they will kick off next week facing Rocky Ford on 1/13.

Leading the stat board for the Trojans are Aaron Vargas with 72 points, Kree Wallace with 60 points, 21 assists, 33 rebounds and 18 steals, Jerome Ethridge with 58 points, 15 assists, and 22 steals, Nicholas Duran with 14 assists, Corbin Turner with 41 rebounds and Logan Servaes with 26 rebounds and 13 steals.  

Front Range Christian

The Front Range Christian Falcons have started their season with a 3-3 overall record, losing to TPCA 55-68, GVCA 53-60, and SkyView Academy 53-72 but was able to get wins over Union Colony Prep 65-60, South Park 66-23, and Front Range Baptist 59-34. The Falcons will be looking to add more wins to their record as they continue play in January and will take on DCA on 1/9 and then will play again next week on1/14 against Denver Jewish Day.

Stat leaders for Front Range Christian are Zach Woo with 77 points, 11 assists, 26 rebounds, and 21 steals, Haeden Morton with 73 points, 14 assists, 62 rebounds, and 17 steals, Caleb Harms with 50 points and 15 steals, Jackson Baldwin with 8 assists, and Ethan Martin with 26 rebounds.

Merino

Merino kicked off the beginning of their season with a 2-4 overall record. The season started rough for the Rams, losing to Strasburg 31-80, Wray 34-44, Highland 47-58, and Wiggins 54-56, but was able to end December with two wins over DCA 52-29, and Akron 56-38. Merino will be looking to add more wins and keep their win success going as they will start 2026 against Wiggins on 1/9 and Peetz on 1/10.

Plateau Valley

The Cowboys started their season off with a 4-3 overall record, getting wins over Basalt 57-51, Sargent 67-40, Cedaredge 54-51, and Ouray 53-49, but loosing to Roaring Fork 89-63 and 64-48, and North Fork 65-70. Plateau Valley will be looking to add more wins to their overall record and will play De Beque on 1/9 and Hayden on 1/10.

Leading the stat board for Plateau Valley are Colter Ralston with 139 points, 21 assists, 45 rebounds and 27 steals, London Mitchell with 122 points, Austin Grundy with 59 points, 19 assists, 43 rebounds, and 11 steals, and Cash Salazar with 23 assists, 37 rebounds and 27 steals.

Limon

Limon hits the number 16 spot in the seeding index with a 2-3 overall record. The Badgers were able to get wins over Akron 41-37 and Calhan 66-16, but lost to Simla 51-65, Peyton 47-53, and Yuma 69-78. Limon will be looking to get more wins than losses on their record and will start by facing Genoa-Hugo on 1/9.

Leading the Badger state board are Aiden Kollath with 36 points, 6 assists, and 15 rebounds, Keagan Mellott with 27 points and  28 rebounds, Daniel Forristall with 21 points, and 26 rebounds, Jacob Jaklich with 7 assists and 5 steals, Joe White with 6 assists, and Brooks Scherrer with 5 steals.
