
Class 2A Girls Basketball Weekly Review and Preview

As the season gets underway in the new year, we look at the teams who are currently sitting in the top 16 spots of the seeding index. But with more than half of games yet to be played, this years top spots are up for grab as competition kicks off.

Simla
So far this season, Simla has shown that they will be a tough team to beat this year. The Cubs are currently 4-0 on the season, beating Bellview Christian 86-7, Akron 50-27, Denver Christian 48-39, and Strasburg 56-8. The team will be looking to ensure they keep this success going as they, like many teams, start consistent play now after the new year. Simla will be playing Byers on 1/9 and Yuma on the road on 1/10.
Leading the Cubs on the stat board so far this season are Trenna Kocerha with 45 points, 22 rebounds, and 19 steals, Carlee Cox with 42 points, 12 assists, and 18 steals, Katie Gotschall with 37 points, Brynlee Amendt with 17 assists, 18 rebounds, and 19 steals, Kinlee Cox with 10 assists, and Anna Kerst with 20 rebounds.
Merino
The Rams are off to a hot start beating their opponents by large margins and sitting at 6-0 so far this season. Merino played and beat Strasburg 61-22, Wray 57-21, Highland 46-20, DCA 46-7, Sedgwick County 63-28 and Wiggins 70-45. The Rams will be looking to keep their win streak going as we jump into January play. The team will okay Wiggins on 1/9, Peetz on 1/10 and will start next weeks games off against Brush on 1/13.
Sanford
The Sanford Mustangs started with season with an 8-0 record and are showing once again that the team is gunning for the top of the 2A pack. To end December play, the team was able to beat Salida 38-37, Escalante 45-31, Swink 35-20, Del Norte 44-32, La Junta 42-12, West Grand 70-7, Soroco 55-15, and Mesa Vista 66-39. Sanford will be looking to maintain their success as they start January off with a league game against Crested Butte in 1/10. The team will then start next weeks games off by play Buena Vista on 1/13.
James Irwin
The Jaguars are starting their season off showing they are a scrapy team, starting their season 3-0, all being wins in close games. James Irwin so far has beat Center 34-31, Fowler 33-27, and Rye 37-36. The team will be looking to continue winning their games and will kick 2026 off against CSCHS on 1/9 and then will start next week off against Pueblo Centennial on 1/12.
Leading James Irwin on the stat board so far this season are Mia Busby with 28 points, 9 assists, 31 rebounds and 12 steals, Stella Reed with 27 points, 31 rebounds and 5 steals, Hannah Meier with 24 points, 8 assists 31 rebounds and 18 steals, and Syrai Rigsby with 10 assists.
Akron
Akron currently sits at number 5 in the Seeding Index to start the season with a 5-2 overall record. The Rams started their season off with a win over Limon 59-25, a loss to Simla 27-50, went on a three game win streak, beating Idalia 45-42, Heritage Christian 37-35, and Holyoke 36-29, fell to Wiggins 31-36 and ended 2025 with a win over Sedgwick County 51-29. Akron will be looking to get a win streak going to start January and will start 2026 against Yuma on 1/9 and then will face Stratton on 1/10.
So far at the top of the Rams stat board are Molly O’Neil with 66 points, 9 assists, 39 rebounds, and 9 steals, Kashlee Randel with 25 points, 14 assists, 18 rebounds, and 16 steals, Addison Weis with 24 points and 5 assists, Taylor Benish with 24 rebounds and Mackenzie Fincher with 7 steals.
Sedgwick County
Sedgwick County started their season off with a 5-2 record, getting wins over Fleming 49-37, South Platte 52-25, Wiggins 33-27, Prairie 44-17, and Wray 52-37, and falling to Merino 63-28, Akron 51-49. The Cougars will not resume games until 1/15 where they will play on the road against Stratton but will be looking to get out of the gates string and get more wins under their belt and remain in the top teams for the season.
Sitting at the top of the leader board for Sedgwick County are Lainee Nein with 66 points, 13 assists, 22 rebounds, and 9 steals, Ryen Carlson with 50 points, Piper Buettenback with 29 points, 9 assists, 33 rebounds and 7 steals, Sophia Rahe with 6 assists and Daryn Nein with 24 rebounds.
Calhan
Calhan started January off maintaining their perfect record to bring them to 5-0 to start the season. So far, the Bulldogs have beat Ellicott 53-14, Fowler 45-34, Center 48-38, Sierra Grande 56-29 and Limon 61-19. The team will be looking to continue their success and will play Genoa-Hugo/ Karval on 1/10.
Leading the team on the stat board so far this season are Fallyn Mallette with 59 points, 10 assists, and 21 steals, Savannah Stewart with 58 points, 12 assists, 20 rebounds and 23 steaks, Kenidee Stewart with 53 points, Willow Levicki with 25 assists, 54 rebounds, and 35 steals, and Aubrei Waugh with 19 rebounds.
Sargent
The Farmers started their season off strong and are currently 5-1 overall on the season. So far this season, Sargent has beat Mancos 57-14, Montezuma-Cortez 51-34, Sangre de Cristo 61-11, Plateau Valley 73-63, and Cedaredge 45-27. The teams lone loss so far this season is against Centauri 34-67. The Farmers will be looking to kick off 2026 against Creed on 1/9 and will be looking to add another win to their record. Sargent will then start next week facing Rye on 1/12 and Ignacio on 1/13.
At the top of the stat board so far this season for Sargent are Kandace Pargin with 90 points, 10 assists, 11 rebounds and 17 steals, Angelise Garcia with 79 points, 15 assists, 4 rebounds and 10 steals, Kimberly Pargin with 54 points, Rylie Harmon with 6 assists and 6 steals, and Aubrey Naranjo with 6 rebounds.
Plateau Valley
The Cowboys are currently sitting with a 5-2 overall record to kick off their season. Plateau Valley got wins over Altamont 51-26, Battle Mountain 56-15, Mancos 45-10, North Fork 30-26, and Ouray 56-18. The teams two losses have come against Meeker 55-56 and Sargent 63-73. To Start January play, the team will play De Beque on 1/9 and then will host Hayden on 1/10. The team will be looking to win these games and get on a 5 game win streak to end the first week of 2026 play.
Leading the team on the stat board so far this season are Macy Brown with 78 points, 12 assists, and 39 rebounds, Presley Hawkins with 72 points and 38 rebounds, Lili Taylor with 35 points, 18 assists, 39 rebounds and 72 steals, Lexi Taylor with 23 assists, and Ryann Bevan with 21 steals.
Twin Peaks Classical Academy
The Timberwolves started their season off with a 4-2 overall record and are currently sitting as number 10 in the CHSAA Seeding Index. Twin Peaks Classical got wins over Front Range Christian 29-18, Caprock Academy 35-33, GVCA 37-30, and Nederland 41-25. The teams’ losses have come against ACA 16-42 and ACANC in overtime 44-48. 2026 will kick off for the team on 1/12 against Skyline and on 1/14 against Two Roads Charter and the team will be looking to add more wins to their record so they can stay at the top in the pack.
Leading the stat board for the team are Kaleigh Van Pelt with 95 points, 11 assists, 60 rebounds, and 53 steals, Elizabeth Zeh with 33 points, Cleo Baker with 20 points, 8 assists, and 13 steals, Imani Francis with 6 assists, 39 rebounds, and 15 steals, and Claire Gifford with 34 rebound.
Rangely
The Panthers are off to a strong start, ending 2025 with a 4-1 overall record. Rangely ended 2025 with wins over South Summit 46-33, Maeser Prep Academy 50-26, Ouray 59-12, and Dove Creek 59-26. The team’s lone loss so far this season was against American Heritage 36-53. The team will start 2026 off on 1/9 in Hayden and then they will host Soroco on 1/10. The team will be looking to win and build upon their current 3 game win streak.
Current stat leaders for the team are Aubriann Tapia with 61 points and 24 rebounds, Aubrey Yates with 52 points, 14 assists, and 18 steals, Addison Scott with 32 points and 27rebounds, Tegan Behunin with 10 assists and 19 steals, and RyLee Kenney with 8 assists.
Swink
The lions currently have a 4-2 overall start to their season, getting wins over Crowley County 55-35, Hoehne 41-31. Vail Mountain 6-25, and Kim/Branson 33-25. The two losses for the team came against La Junta 39-41 and Sanford 20-34. Swink will be looking to start the new year off with some wins and will take on Fowler in league play on 1/9 and Cheraw on 1/0.
Leading the team so far on the stat board are Jocelyn James with 84 points, Taylor Mendenhall with 39 points and Laney James with 28 points.
Byers
The Bulldogs are currently 13th in the seeding index with a 4-3 overall record, beating Sierra Grande 63-28, Bennett 47-35, Lyons 55-32, and Kiowa 51-17, and falling to ECA 32-48, DCA in OT 58-59, and Wiggins 17-60. Byers will kick off 2026 with a tough opponent in Simla on 1/9 and then will take on Denver Christian on 1/13. These will be tough games for Byers but the team will be looking to add more wins to their overall record to start the new year.
At the top of the leaderboard for the team so far this season are Leyla Sayler with 62 points and 35 rebounds, Madilee Olsen with 57 points, 28 assists, 29 rebounds and 21 steals, Sydney Smith with 41 points and 11 steals, Danica Lancaster with 8 assists, Cossette Kerns with 8 assists, and Abi Green with 27 rebounds and 14 steals.
Caprock Academy
The Eagles ended their December portion of the season with a 4-2 overall record, beating Ascent Classical 41-30, Liberty Tree Academy 47-32, Olathe 25-22 and Telluride 41-15 but falling to TPCA 33-35 and Nucla 24-41. Caprock Academy will be looking to start 2026 on a high note and will be looking for wins over West Grand on 1/9 and Vail Mountain on 1/10. Next week the team will start their games on 1/14 against De Beque on the road.
At the top of Caprock Academy’s stat board so far this season are Taylor Phillips with 16 points and 12 steals, Ali Yarnell with 12 points and 9 rebounds, Ashley Wilke with 10 points, 9 rebounds and 5 steals, Katie Repshire with 4 assists, Brenley Witt with 3 assists and 6 rebounds, and Rachel Bogan with 8 steals.
Del Norte
Del Norte started off their season with a 2-3 overall record, beating Hoehne 42-30 and Pueblo Centennial 53-34 and falling to Alamosa 31-58, Buena Vista 32-37, and Sanford 32-44. The Tigers will be looking to get more wins added to their record now in 2026 and will kick of the new year against Ignacio on 1/9 and Monte Vista on 1/10.
Leading the stat board for the Tigers are Emma Parra with 17 points, and 2 steals, Ady Ruybal with 7 points, 1 assists, 5 rebounds, and 1 steal, Makenzie Consaul with 4 points, 1 assists and 7 rebounds, Brynley Brown with 5 rebounds, and Elaina Consaul with 1 steal.
Heritage Christian
Heritage Christian started their season off with a 4-2 overall record, beating Liberty Common 50-29, Prospect Ridge Academy 53-33, Otis 47-28 and DCA 53-41, and fell to Wiggins 47-56, and Akron 35-37. The Eagles will be looking to add more wins to their record and will be taking on Skyview on 1/9 and then they will start next week off at Dawson School on 1/13.
