
Class 2A Boys Basketball Weekly Review and Preview
As the season gets underway in the new year, we look at the teams who are currently sitting in the top 12 spots of the seeding index. But with more than half of games yet to be played, this year’s top spots are up for grab as competition kicks off.

#1 Twin Peaks Classical Academy
The Timberwolves are off to a strong start to their season with a 9-0 overall record. The team so far this season got quality wins over Front Range Christian (68-55), Golden View Classical (41-37), and Addenbrooke Classical (63-47). Twin Peaks Classical won’t face another opponent until next week when they face STEM Highland Ranch on 1/21 and Liberty Tree Academy on 1/23.
Stat leaders for Twin Peaks Classical are Matthew Wurth averaging 11.6 ppg, 14.0 rpg, and 2.8 steals per game, David Bosire 10.1 ppg, 6.3 rpg, and 2.6 apg, Angel Ortea 9.7 ppg, 1.6 apg, 1.8 spg, and Jace Ross 8.9 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 1.7 apg.
#2 Byers
The Bulldogs have started their season off with a 7-1 overall record. Byers were perfect in 2025 but have kicked off 2026 going 1-1 but playing a pair of tough 3A Schools. Byers has quality wins over Sierra Grande (66-61), ECA (57-49), Bennett (75-59), Lyons (69-44), Dayspring Christian (65-36), and Denver Christian (66-62). The team will be looking to add more wins to their record and get momentum going in 2026 and will face Genoa-Hugo (1/16) to wrap up this week’s play.
#3 Sanford
The Mustangs are off to a hot start to the season with an overall 10-0 record. So far, Sanford has picked up quality wins over Escalante NM (49-38), La Junta (49-39), Sierra Grande (52-47), Mesa Vista (45-43), Crested Butte (42-35), and Buena Vista (49-21). The team will be looking to continue their success and get more wins added to their record now in January, they wrap up this week with a pair of games against Fowler (1/16) and Custer County (1/17).
#4 Golden View Classical Academy
GVCA kicked off their season with a 7-1 overall and 2-0 league start. The Sentinels were able to get quality wins over Lyons (66-63), Caprock Academy (55-29), Front Range Christian (60-53), and Denver Waldorf (64-56). The lone loss for the team came from TPCA where GVCA lost 37-41. Golden View Classical will face a top 3A opponent this weekend on 1/17 against Windsor Charter.
Stat leaders for GVCA are Jacob Walker 17.4 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 4.1 apg, Luke Chronowski (14.1 ppg), 3.1 rpg, 4.6 apg, George Hermanson 9.2 ppg, 8.4 rpg, 1.2 spg, and Huck Hale 8.1 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 3.3 apg.
#5 Simla
Simla kicked off their season with a 3-2 overall record. Simla has collected quality wins over Limon (65-51) and Denver Christian (60-51). Simla fell to Strasburg 52-76 and Yuma 75-62 both ranked 3A teams. The Cubs are looking to get back on the winning streak and will be taking Peyton (tonight) and Hoehne (1/17).
Leading the stat board so far this season are Tatum Kocerha 21.8 ppg, 11.0 rpg, 5.6 apg, Evan Guy 16.8 ppg, 2.4 apg, 1.4 spg, Connor Maranville 10.2 ppg, 9.6 rpg, and Ty Stanko 5.8 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 1.0 spg.
#6 Heritage Christian
The Eagles are starting their season off with a 5-3 overall record. Heritage Christian picked up quality wins over Otis (55-46), SkyView Academy (75-40), and Dawson School (67-36). Heritage Christian did start their season off with three losses to Liberty Common 42-73, Forge Christian 62-81, and Wiggins 32-45. Heritage Christian will be looking add more wins to their record and face just Clear Creek (1/17) to end their week.
Leading the stat board for the Eagles are Guede Wade 15.0 ppg, 9.3 rpg, 1.7 apg, Alec Lundy 14.3 ppg, 8.4 rpg, 3.6 apg, Isaiah Nevarez 9.4 ppg, 2.1 apg, 2.6 spg, and Samuel Hanson 8.8 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 2.8 apg.
#7 Haxtun
Currently sitting in the number 7 spot in the seeding index, Haxtun started their season off with a 5-4 overall record. The Bulldogs were able to pick up quality wins over Dayspring Christian (63-49), Prairie (53-51), and Holyoke (56-50). Haxtun four losses all look to be quality loses to Highland, Wiggins (x2), and Perkins County NE. Haxtun will be looking to improve their record and face Peetz (1/16) and Holyoke (1/17) to end the week.
Leading the stat board for Haxtun is Chase Goddard 16.1 ppg, 9.3 rpg, 2.4 spg, Madden Larsen 12.4 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 2.6 apg, Colin Cone 8.0 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 1.8 apg, and Corbin Anderson 7.3 ppg, 4.6 rpg.
#8 Swallows Charter Academy
SCA is currently 7-2 overall on the season and 1-0 in league play. The Spartans have so far have quality wins over Custer County (50-48), Center (62-45), Frontier Academy (69-57), Fowler (64-48), and Crowley County (65-38). The teams’ losses were against Pueblo Centennial 64-72 and Florence 34-38. SCA will be looking to get more wins added to their record and the main part of the season starts. Swallows Charter will face Las Animas (tonight) and Vail Christian (1/17) to end the week.
Leading the stat board for the team are Charles Perry 10.8 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 2.4 apg, Mike Vazquez 10.7 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 2.2 spg, Andrew Breedlove 8.9 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 2.3 apg, and Elias Garcia 8.1 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 2.3 apg.
#9 Plateau Valley
The Cowboys started their season off with a 6-3 overall record. Plateau Valley has quality wins over Basalt (57-51), Sargent (67-40), Cedaredge (54-51), Ouray (53-49), and De Beque (58-43). Roaring Fork has 3 quality losses on the schedule with two losses to Roaring Fork and North Fork. Plateau Valley will be looking to add more wins to their overall record. The have just one game this week against West Grand (1/17).
Leading the stat board for Plateau Valley are Colter Ralston 19.1 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 3.7 apg, London Mitchell 17.7 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 2.2 apg, Austin Grundy 9.3 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 2.6 apg, and Cash Salazar 5.7 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 3.8 spg.
#10 Vail Christian
The Saints kicked off their season with a 6-2 start.
Vail Christian has quality wins over Cedaredge (78-76), Crested Butte (54-35), Vail Mountain (44-28), and Buena Vista (51-50). The two losses for the team came against Highland 43-73 and Nucla 44-55. Vail Christian will be looking to get more wins added to their record. They face West Grand tomorrow and end the week with a key top 10 matchup with Swallows Charter (1/17).
Stat leaders for Vail Christian are Oliver Neumann 15.4 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 2.1 spg, Rayman Romanin 11.5 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 3.1 apg, Wyatt Hansen 8.0 ppg, 1.8 rpg, 1.3 spg, and Jack O’Shaugnessy 5.6 ppg, 6.9 rpg.
#11 Trinidad
The Miners are off on a 6-1 start to the season. Trinidad has just one quality win so far over Kim/Branson (57-54). Trinidad did suffer their first loss of the season falling to Kim/Branson 62-51. Trinidad will face Center tonight in a huge league matchup and finish the week against Raton NM (1/17).
Leading the stat board for Trinidad are Xavier Garcia 13.8 ppg, 1.0 apg, 2.6 spg, Cole Gegelman 12.5 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 3.7 spg, Isaiah Moreno 10.2 ppg, 7.2 rpg, 3.7 spg, and Jeremiah Romero 9.8 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 4.5 spg.
#13 Las Animas
The Trojans current record 6-2 overall record and 1-0 in league play. Las Animas currently has quality wins Arickaree (53-24), Elkhart KS (63-43), and Rocky Ford (61-41). Las Animas currently has two losses to out of stat opponents in Syracuse KS 51-63 and Greely County KS 48-61. Las Animas will face Swallows Charter in a key matchup tonight and will end the week on 1/17 against Evangelical Christian.
