
Class 2A Girls Basketball Weekly Review and Preview

Already halfway through the first month of the year, we look at the top 16 teams in the CHSAA Seeding Index this week. Some teams are spacing out their games while others are diving full into busy weeks of play. Either way we see the competition heating up just before most teams start their league play.

Simla
Since our last look at the Simla Cubs, the team was able to get a big win over Yuma last week 67-39. This gives Simla a 5-0 start to their season and puts them at the top of the CHSAA Seeding Index this week. The Cubs will be looking to maintain their momentum and get another win under their belt as they travel to Hoehne to take on the farmers on 1/17. Next week will be a busy week for Simla as they will play Liberty Tree Academy on 1/20, Idalia on 1/23 and Fowler on 1/24.
Leading the team on the stat board so far this season are Carlee Cox with 57 points, 15 assists, and 24 steals, Trenna Kocerha with 54 points, 28 rebounds and 20 steals, Haylee Easler with 43 points, Brynlee Amendt with 20 assists, 21 rebounds and 21 steals, Kinlee Cox with 16 assists, and Anna Kerst with 22 rebounds.
Merino
To start the first week of games in the new year, Merino got three wins to add to their overall record, beating Wiggins 43-25, Peetz 71 -13, and Brush 49-10 to put them and 9-0 on the season and in the number two spot in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The team will have a less busy week this week and will be looking to get their win record into double digits as they will take on the Stratton Eagles on 1/17.
Sanford
The Mustangs were able to keep their undefeated record intact during the last week of play, beating Crested Butte 43-8 in league play and beating Buena Vista in a nail bitter 24-23. This brings Sanford up to a 10-0 overall record and a 1-0 start to their league record. Sanford will be looking to keep their success going as they take on the Fowler Grizzlies on 1/16. The team will then face their rivals next door in the Centauri Falcons on 1/20.
Sedgwick County
Sitting in the number four spot of the CHSAA Seeding Index, the Sedgwick County Cougars were able to start their new year off with a win over Wray 52-37. Tonight will be the team’s second game of 2026 where they will be on the road to Stratton and will try to move their overall record from 5-2 to 6-2. Sedwick County will then face Caliche on the road on 1/16 and will be looking to end the week with two additional wins to their record.
At the top of the stat board for Sedgwick County are Lainee Nein with 101 points, 23 assists, 43 rebounds, and 15 steals, Ryen Carlson with 83 points and 12 steals, Piper Buettenback with 46 points, 10 assists, 42 rebounds and 14 steals, Sophia Rahe with 10 assists, and Daryn Nein with 35 rebounds.
Sargent
Rounding out the top five teams in the CHSAA Seeding Index is the Sargent Farmers. Sargent is currently 8-1 overall on the season after start of the new year with three wins over Creede 64-18, Rye 55-28 and Ignacio 50-31. The Farmers will be looking to add more wins to their overall record and start their league play off on the right foot as they will take on La Veta on 1/15 and then league opponent Center on 1/22.
Leading the Farmers stat board so far this season are Kandace Pargin with 134 points, 10 assists, 11 rebounds and 17 steals, Angelise Garcia with 117 points, 15 assists, 4 rebounds and 10 steals, Kimberly Pargin with 76 points, Rylie Harmon with 6 assists and 6 steals, and Aubrey Naranjo with 6 rebounds.
Calhan
The Calhan Bulldogs were able to easily secure another win last week over Genoa-Hugo/Karval 42-25, bringing their overall record up to 6-0 to start the season. The Bulldogs will be looking to keep their winning streak going as they take on the Swink Lions today and then Burlington on 1/17. The team will then kick off play next week on 1/20 when they will face Kiowa on the road.
Leading Calhan on the stat board so far this season are Fallyn Mallette with 76 points, 13 assists and 24 steals, Kenidee Stewart with 63 points, Savannah Stewart with 63 points, 15 assists, 23 rebounds, and 27 assists, Willow Levicki with 28 assists, 70 rebounds, and 41 steals, and Aubrie Waugh with 22 rebounds.
James Irwin
The Jaguars started off the week and new year with a loss to Pueblo Centennial 41-50, bringing their overall record to 3-1 to start the season. Although not a bad loss for the team, James Irwin will be looking for a bounce back and will face the Florence Huskies tonight and will be looking for the win. The team will end the week at home and will take on The Vanguard School on 1/17. Next weeks play will start back at home for the Jaguars where they will play Salida on 1/21.
Stat leaders for the team so far this season are Hannah Meier with 36 points, 8 assists, 37 rebounds and 25 steals, Mia Busby with 34 points, 13 assists, 51 rebounds and 16 steals, Stella Reed with 33 points, 36 rebounds and 9 steals, and Syrai Rigsby with 12 assists.
Akron
The Rams did not start 2026 off the way they would have liked, losing their last two games against Yuma 27-41 and Stratton 30-34. This puts the team at 5-4 overall on the season. Akron will be looking to change their momentum and add some wins back to their record this week and will face Burlington on 1/16 on the road and then will be back home on 1/17 to play Wiggins. Next week the team will start their week off playing Fleming on 1/20.
Leading the Rams on the stat board are Molly O’Neil with 66 points, 9 assists, 39 rebounds, and 9 steals, Kashlee Randel with 25 points, 14 assists, a8 rebounds and 16 steals, Addison Weis with 24 points and 5 assists, Taylor Benish with 24 rebounds and Mackenzie Fincher with 7 steals.
Plateau Valley
The Cowboys are off to a 7-2 start to the season and are on a 5 game winning streak after beating De Beque 43-14 and Hayden 60-17. This puts the team and number nine in the seeding index and also gives them a 2-0 start to their league play. Plateau Valley will be looking to keep their momentum moving as they will face their league opponent West Grand on 1/17 and then they will kick next week off at home against Nucla on 1/20.
Stat leaders for the Cowboys are Macy Bevan with 102 points and 52 rebounds, Presley Hawkins with 101 points and 52 rebounds, Ava Johnson with 50 points, Lexi Taylor with 28 assists, Lili Taylor with 23 assists, 45 rebounds and 33 steals, Bailee Taylor with 20 assists and 32 steals, and Ryann Bevan with 29 steals.
Rangely
Rounding out the top 10 in the CHSAA Seeding Index, Rangely is 6-2 overall on the season after beating Hayden 55-25, Soroco 59-26 and falling to Meeker 43-48 to start 2026. The Panthers will be looking to bounce back from their last loss and get another win added to their record as they take on the North Fork Miners on 1/17.
Leading Rangely on the stat board are Aubriann Tapia with 88 points, 43 rebounds, and 28 steals, Aubrey Yates with 78 points, 21 assists, and 29 steals, Tegan Behunin with 57 points, 12 assists, 39 rebounds and 35 steals, RyLee Kenney with 15 assists, and Addison Scott with 39 rebounds.
Swink
The Swink Lions are 5-3 overall on the season and are so far 1-0 in league play. Swink started off the new year with a league win over Fowler 48-32 but fell in their last game against Cheraw 31-51. The Lions will be looking to get back on the winning side of things and will be taking on the Calhan Bulldogs tonight at home. The team will then go on the road to play Granada on 1/17 and will start next week off on the road at Swallows Charter Academy on 1/20.
Leading the score board for the Swink Lions are Jocelynn James with 106 points, Taylor Mendenhall with 53 points, and Laney James with 40 points.
Heritage Christian
Heritage Christian is on a three game winning streak since the start of the new year, beating DCA 53-41, SkyView Academy 60-33, and Dawson School 60-4 to bring their overall record up to 6-2. This win streak of league games for the Eagles also brings their league record up to 3-0. The team will be looking to maintain their success next week and will kick off play on 1/20 against Flatirons Academy on the road.
Byers
The Bulldogs are off to a 4-4 overall start to the season, with their last two games resulting in losses for the team against Wiggins 17-60 and Denver Christian 47-73. Byers will be looking to flip the script and get a win added to their record tomorrow night (1/16) as they will host Genoa-Hugo/Karval. Next week the team will start their week of play off by hosting Elbert on 1/21.
Stat leaders for Byers so far this season are Leyla Sayler with 78 points and 45 rebounds, Madilee Olsen with 67 points, 35 assists. 37 rebounds and 26 steals, Sydney Smith with 48 points and 11 steals, Taiya Eymann with 10 assists, and Abi Green with 9 assists, 30 rebounds, and 14 steals.
Dove Creek
The Bulldogs have a 6-3 overall record so far this season with a 1-0 league record and have started the 2-26 portion of the season off with two wins. These wins were over Ignacio 48-19 and Mancos 35-31. Dove Creek will be looking to add more wins to their record and will travel to Ridgway on 1/17 and then to Monticello to start next weeks games on 1/20.
Leading the team on the stat board so far this season are Taylor Hampton with 144 points, 9 assists, 100 rebounds, and 35 steals, Hadley Hatfield with 59 points, 43 assists and 34 steals, Mykaela Fury with 33 points, 14 assists, 64 rebounds, and 29 steals, and Leah Barnett with 39 rebounds.
Twin Peaks Classical Academy
The Timerwolves are currently 5-3 overall on the season after losing to Skyline 39-41 and beating Two Roads Charter School 36-10. TPCA is 1-0 in league play with the win over Two Rads Charter and are sitting in the 15th spot in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The team will be looking to get more wins added to their record and will play next week against STEMSHR on 1/21 and Liberty Tree Academy on 1/23.
Leading the teams stat board so far this season are Kaleigh Van Pelt with 118 points, 13 assists, 69 rebounds, and 60 steals, Elizabeth Zeh with 37 points, Cleo Baker with 23 points, 9 assists, and 21 steals, Imani Francis with 6 assists, 46 rebounds and 17 steals, and Claire Gifford with 43 rebounds.
Loveland Classical
The Lions are currently 6-3 overall, 3-0 in league play, and are 16th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. After a loss to Liberty Common 37-42 to start the new year, Loveland Classical was able to bounce back and beat ACA 37-36, Poudre Community Academy 44-3, and Ascent Classical Academy 51-24. The lions will be looking to keep their winning streak alive and will host Front range Baptist on 1/16.
Leading the lions in stats so far this season are Abigail Ruppert with 37 points, 1 assists, 6 rebounds and 19 steals, Keira Doan with 19 points, 1 assists, 5 rebounds, and 7 steals, Abby Jensen with 8 points, Lara Reidel with 1 assists, Sofia Winters with 3 rebounds, and Natalia Winters with 8 steals.
