Class 2A Wrestling Week 5 Recap and Week 6 Preview
Week 5 Recap
Mel Smith Wrestling Tournament
A lot can be learned from the results here but always remember it doesn’t always tell the whole story and the ultimate goal is to perform at State not just a big tournament. Keep in mind several teams sent their elite wrestlers to the Doc B in California for this weekend instead.

Highland’s weekend was the kind of statement every program wants: two champions who controlled their weight classes and a supporting cast that kept the lineup balanced. Tyler Varra and Wyatt Chase supplied the big wins, but it was Highland’s ability to score from middle to heavyweight that turned individual success into team momentum.
Buena Vista and Cedaredge both leaned on signature victories; Carter Stromer and Cash Martinez gave those rosters a clear identity and match‑winning potential. Crowley County and Custer County each had a standout who kept their schools in the conversation, while Monte Vista and Fowler showed flashes that could translate into more consistent scoring with a few adjustments.

Burlington delivered the most complete performance of the tournament, stacking four champions and a wave of top‑five finishers that pushed the Cougars well past the field. Their balance across all weights — from Lopez and Esquivel down low to Estrada and Rogers up top — made them the clear team of the day.
Trinidad brought the firepower, highlighted by Isaiah Martinez at 113 and the Edwards–Sandoval 1–2 punch at 175. Las Animas wasn’t far behind in star quality, with Layf Skadberg and Ruben Gallegos both cruising to titles and giving the Trojans a strong foundation.
Limon showed depth without a champion, placing nine wrestlers and proving they can score everywhere even when they don’t reach the top of the podium. County Line, Holly, and Springfield each produced standout moments — especially Springfield’s heavyweight champ Logan Spires.
