CLASS 1A GIRLS BASKETBALL REPORT

As we near the midpoint of the regular season, the top match-ups continue to dot the docket. The top-12 teams in Thursday morning’s release of the CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index have some tough challenges in the weekend and early next week.

#1 MCCLAVE (8-1)

The Lady Cardinals faced two tough opponents last weekend, and they came away with a pair of high quality wins. First, they survived #9 Springfield on the road last Thursday, and got a 60-55 victory. Avery Hemphill posted a double-double of 14 points and 13  rebounds, and Addison Vallejos also scored 14 points. McClave backed that up with a 51-39 win over #3 Eads in High Plains league action, with Abrielle Gomez scoring a game-high 20. The Lady Cards host 2A Limon on Thursday, and also have home games with #6 Stratton on Saturday, and Kim/Branson next Tuesday.

#2 EVANGEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY (8-1)

ECA ran its winning streak to three with two Ws last week, as the Lady Eagles beat Kiowa 51-29 on Thursday, and Las Animas 53-38 on Saturday. Mia Castro went for 19 points and 14 steals in the first of those victories, and Reagan Schultz tacked on 15 points and 17 rebounds. Schultz exploded for 23 points against Las Animas, and Castro recorded a triple-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds, 11 steals. The Lady Eagles have a top-15 showdown on Friday, with #12 Prairie paying a visit. They go to Hi-Plains on Saturday.

#3 EADS (8-2)

Jordynn Turcotte put up 11 points and Anna Wollert added 10 in a 50-18 Eads win over Wiley last Thursday/ Wollert followed that up with 18 points and 14 rebounds in the 51-39 loss to McClave on Friday. Reese Barnett pitched in a dozen in that contest. The Lady Eagles have a clash with another group of highly-ranked Lady Eagles on Friday, when they visit Stratton. Eads also goes to #8 Idalia on Saturday.

#4 NUCLA (11-1)

Nucla got to 11 straight wins with a commanding 54-9 victory over Ouray last Thursday behind 16 points from Shay Snyder, and a double-double from Lantry Galley, who posted 11 points and 11 rebounds. That streak came to an end on Tuesday in a 55-42 loss to 2A #7 Plateau Valley. The Lady Mustangs travel to De Beque on Thursday and go Dove Creek next Tuesday.

#5 FLEMING (6-2)

The Lady Wildcats also have a winning streak continue last week, as they collected a tough 44-34 win over Genoa-Hugo/Karval last Saturday. Like Nucla, they also had their streak snapped on Tuesday, as they fell at 2A #6 Akron. Fleming opens North Central on Friday against Peetz.

#6 STRATTON (6-3)

The past week included two games against highly-ranked 2A teams for Stratton, who went 1-1 in those match-ups. The Lady Eagles trailed 2A #4 Sedgwick County 29-20 entering the fourth quarter last Thursday, but rallied in that final frame to collect 36-34 victory. Saturday’s contest at 2A #1 Merino was a struggle, as the Lady Rams ran away with 63-35 win. This weekend is also challenging for Stratton, who welcomes Eads to town on Friday, and travels to McClave on Saturday. Elbert visits next Tuesday.

#7 CHERAW (10-1)

To say that Cheraw was dominant last week may be an understatement. The Lady Wolverines controlled Deer Trail by a 61-10 tally on Thursday, and then earning a 53-3 win on Saturday against Sangre de Cristo. They are at Cheyenne Wells on Thursday for a High Plains clash, and Cheraw visits Walsenburg on Saturday.

#8 IDALIA (6-2)

High winds and dangerous travel conditions caused Idalia’s contest at Otis last Friday to be postponed. The Lady Wolves will be for the next week, beginning with a YWKC match-up against Lone Star on Thursday. They will visit 2A #2 Simla on Friday, host Eads on Saturday, and will also be home next Tuesday against #11 Flagler

#9 SPRINGFIELD (8-2)

Cobi Mackey scored 19 points in Springfield’s 60-55 loss to McClave last Thursday, and BriLynn Jackson and Jersey Speck added 15 points apiece for the Lady Longhorns. Both of their losses have been to McClave. Jackson made it a double-double by grabbing 11 rebounds. Springfield bounced back to beat Primero 61-11 on Friday, behind 22 points from Speck. She went for 19 points in Saturday’s 61-19 win at Holly. Mackey flirted with a triple-double, finishing the night with 14 points, 10 assists, and nine rebounds. The Lady Longhorns only have one game this weekend, as they host Kit Carson on Saturday.

#10 CALICHE (9-2)

It was a 1-1 weekend for Caliche last go round, as the Lady Buffs dropped a 52-37 decision to Sedgwick County in LPAA play on Friday, and then collected a 66-15 win over Otis in non-league action on Tuesday. Caliche was only down by five against SedgCo, but got outscored 15-5 in the fourth to provide the final separation. The bounce back earlier this week began with a 25-2 first quarter. The Lady Buffs will host Flagler on Saturday, and have a road trip to Peetz next Tuesday.

#11 FLAGLER (8-1)

Flagler pushed its winning streak to five last weekend with three lopsided victories. Rylie Berry posted 18 points and nine rebounds in a 40-18 win over Flatirons Academy on Thursday, and the sophomore added 22 points and eight boards on Friday in a Union Pacific victory at 2A Limon. Flagler won 55-20. Berry completed her big weekend with 14 points and eight rebounds as Flagler beat Wiley 53-11 on Saturday. Before visiting Caliche on Saturday, the Lady Panthers will host 2A Byers in UP play on Friday. They will also have the road trip to Idalia next Tuesday.

#12 PRAIRIE (8-2)

Prairie got a triple-double out of Hannah Kugler in last Saturday’s 53-44 win over Kimball (NE). Kugler finished with 20 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 steals. She went over 1000 career points on Tuesday, when the Lady Mustangs doubled up Peetz, 54-27. Prairie will visit ECA on Friday, and host Potter-Dix (NE) next Tuesday.
