Class 3A Boys Basketball Weekly Review and Preview

This week marks the beginning of league play for many teams, or the last couple of games before teams’ dive into league play. We look at the top 16 teams in this article and see if there is much movement yet or if teams are already solidifying their position in the top half of the class pack.

Strasburg

The Indians remain undefeated so far this season with an 11-0 overall record and a 3-0 league record. The latest victory for Strasburg was over Windsor Charter Academy 74-56 earlier this week. The boys will be looking to maintain their record and will take on Resurrection Christian on 1/23 to end the week.

Stat leaders for Strasburg are Brody Hopwood with 232 points, 54 rebounds and 33 steals, Nick Glatfelter with 152 points, 42 assists, 87 rebounds, and 27 steals, Cade Hemphill with 137 points and 25 steals, Cam Manahan with 33 assists and 58 rebounds, and Colton Holloway with 29 assists.

Banning Lewis Academy

The Stallions are undefeated so far this season with an 11-0 overall record, a 5-0 league record and are 1st in the Tri-Peaks League. Banning Lewis was able to get the win over Lamar to end last week 57-41 and started this week off with a win over St. Mary’s Academy 68-50. The team will be looking to remain undefeated to end the week as they take on Rye on the road on 1/23. 

Leading the team on the stat board for Banning Lewis Academy is Matthew Lebron with 256 points, 23 assists, and 36 steals, Jordan Jones with 99 points, 80 rebounds and 21 steals, Zander Mauna with 99 points, 80 assists, 43 rebounds and 51 steals, Jimmy Berger with 31 assists, and Canon Meyer with 53 rebounds. 

Forge Christian

The Fury are sitting 3rd in the CHSAA Seeding Index with a 12-1 overall record, a 1-1 league record and are 7th in the Metro League. Forge Christian ended last week with their 12 win over Sterling 80-57 but lost their first game of the season and of league play to Peak to Peak 53-58. The team will be looking to get back on the right foot and will play again next week on 1/27 when they host Colorado Academy.

Stat leaders for the Fury are Levi Clark with 278 points, 72 rebounds and 23 steals, Sebastian Still with 162 points and 48 assists, Enrique Diggins with 149 points, 36 assists, 62 rebounds, and 23 steals, Quentin Torres with 64 assists and 31 steals, and Treysen Eye with 82 rebounds.

Yuma

The Outlaws are 11-1 overall on the season with a 3-0 league record and are currently 3rd in the Patriot League. The team is currently on a 9 game winning streak after beating Brush 59-44 and Eaton 53-45 last weekend and starting the week off with a win over Platte Valley 55-52. Yuma will be looking to keep their win steak going and add more wins to their record as they will host Highland on 1/23.

Stat leaders for Yuma are Brody Sheffield with 222 points, 45 assists, 75 rebounds, and 19 steals, Alex Pensado with 91 points, 19 assists, 38 rebounds, and 22 stelas, Jalen Rose with 72 points, 27 assists, and 21 steals, and David Covarrubias with 45 rebounds.

Windsor Charter Academy

Sitting at number 5 in the CHSAA Seeding Index, the Firebirds are 9-3 overall on the season with a 2-1 league record and are 5th in the Patriot League. Windsor Charter was able to get wins over Wiggins 67-46 and GVCA 71-45 to end last week but lost their game this week against Strasburg 56-74. The team will be looking to get another win to add to their record next week as they take on Resurrection Christian on 1/27.

Leading the team on the stat board are Dayton Long with 275 points, 32 assists, 90 rebounds, and 23 steals, Andrew Schams with 227 points, 37 assists, 68 rebounds, and 34 steals, Jackson Avery with 73 points, and Luke Unruh with 47 assists, 55 rebounds, and 19 steals.

Peyton

Peyton is currently 9-2 overall with a 1-0 league record and are 1st in the Black Forest League.  Last week the team was able to get wins over Simla 73-72 and Crowley County 72-58. The Panthers will be looking to maintain their success and more wins to their record as they take on league opponent Thomas MacLaren School tonight at home and then will start next week off facing Calhan on the road on 1/26.

Leading the Panther’s stat board so far this season are Michael Perry with 244 points, 60 assists, and 20 steals, Bryce Love with 158 points, 116 rebounds, and 16 steals, Trent Gregg with 95 points and 80 rebounds, Gabe Gatti with 35 assists and 31 steals, and Kaden Lehman-Tubbs with 28 assists and 42 rebounds.

Resurrection Christian

The Cougars are currently 9-2 overall on the season with a 3-0 league record and are 1st in the Patriot league. Resurrection Christian was able to get the win over Wray last week 58-44 but fell to Kent Denver 59-74. The team was then able to bounce back and beat Wiggins 58-37 to start the week. Tomorrow will be a real test for Resurrection Christian as they take on the number 1 team in the seeding index in Strasburg. The team will be looking for a big win in this game which would help them move up the seeding index.

Stat leaders for the Cougars are Egan Koenig with 199 points, 46 assists, 48 rebounds, and 23 steals, Reagan Cunningham with 100 points, 16 assists, and 57 rebounds, Asher Andre with 74 points and 19 assists, Dillion Koning with 45 rebounds, Jaxson Pszanka with 10 steals and Braeden Kemp with 8 steals. 

Wiggins

Wiggins is currently 9-4 overall on the season with a 0-3 league record and are 9th in the Patriot League. Last week, the Tigers lost to Windsor Charter 46-67 and beat Akron 58-51. The team started the week off with a loss to Resurrection Christian 37-58 and will be looking to get back on the winning side of things as they take on Brush on 1/23 to end the week.

Stat leaders for Wiggins Michael Adamson with 196 points and 75 rebounds, Jackson Adams with 145 points, 38 assists 49 rebounds and 33 steals, Alex Tarango with 85 points and 20 steals, Jace Yzaguirre with 28 assists and 53 rebounds, and Grady Wilson with 26 assists and 28 steals.

Liberty Common

Liberty Common is 8-2 overall on the season, 2-1 in league play and are 6th in the Patriot league. Last week the team was able to beat Lyons 67-47 and Dawson School 86-35 and then was able to also beat Frontier Academy 89-69 to start this week. The team will be looking to get more wins added to their record as they end the week playing Wray on the road on 1/23.

Stat leaders for the Eagles are Caiden Castillo with 181 points, 41 assists, 38 rebounds, and 33 steals, Grayson Clay with 146 points and 26 steals, David Hutchins with 95 points, Noah Lacy with 29 assists, and Solen Castillo with 26 assists, 64 rebounds, and 33 steals.

St. Mary’s

St. Mary’s was able to beat La Junta last week 69-34 but fell to Banning Lewis earlier this week 50-68. The Pirates are now 7-2 overall on the season with a 2-1 league record, are 7th in the Tri-Peaks league and are in the 10th spot in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The team will be looking to get more wins added to their record as they will take on Buena Vista on 1/23 to end the week of play.

Leading the Pirates’ stat board are Cruz Artaechevarria with 124 points, 27 assists, and 19 steals, Jeremiah Starr with 120 points, 21 assists, and 43 rebounds, Michael Trechter with 91 points and 44 rebounds, Bret Stewart with 25 assists and 24 steals, and Kisean Dawson with 57 rounds.

The Vanguard School

The Vanguard School is 7-3 so far this season with a 2-1 league record and are 4th in the Tri-Peaks league. The last win for the Coursers was over James Irwin 90-34. The team will now be looking to continue winning as they take on La Junta tonight on the road. Next week the team will face St. Mary’s and will be looking to beat them and take their spot in the CHSAA Seeding Index.

Stat leaders for the Coursers are Matty Dessalegn with 209 points, 39 assists, 109 rebounds, and 23 steals, Josh Alade with 145 points, 29 assists, 99 rebounds, and 24 steals, Cameron Jenkins with 83 points, and Isaiah Bregard with 48 assists, 32 rebounds, and 38 steals.

Roaring Fork

The Rams are in the 12th spot in the CHSAA Seeding Index with a 9-2 overall record, a 4-0 league record and are 1st in the Western Slope league. Roaring Fork was able to beat Cedaredge 71-55 and Olathe 89-67 last week to add these wins to their overall and league record. The team will be looking to add more wins to both records to end the week as they take on league opponent Meeker on 1/24.

Stat leaders for the Rams are Lucas Carballeira with 234 points, 42 assists, 59 rebounds and 24 steals, Kiko Pena with 154 points, 19 assists, 112 rebounds and 18 steals, Quentin Galbraith with 84 points, Ethan Wilson with 33 assists, Ryder Tezanos with 43 rebounds and Oliver Shook with 20 steals.

Highland

The Huskies are currently on a three game losing streak, having lost their most recent game against Platte Valley 58-69. The team is now 7-4 overall with a 0-2 league record and are 8th in the Patriot league. Highland will be looking to snap their losing streak and will play Yuma in Yuma on 1/23.

Stat leaders for Highland are Dom Huntington with 160 points, 37 rebounds and 24 steals, Brogan Palmer with 151 points, 18 assists, and 106 rebounds, Rowdy Watson with 147 points, 34 assists, 45 rebounds and 19 steals, Eli Elder with 17 assists, and Wyatt Enns with 15 steals.

Colorado Springs Christian

The Lions are 7-3 overall so far this season with a 4-0 league record and are sitting 2nd in the Tri-Peaks league. Colorado Springs Chrisitan was able to beat Florence to end last week 68-41 and beat Rye at the start of this week 80-62, which were both league games. The team will be looking to add another win and keep their perfect league record to end the week when they travel to Salida to face the Spartans on 1/23.

Leading the stat board for the team are Maximiliano Cota-Cordova with 281 points, 25 assists, 60 rebounds, and 29 steals, Sam Salsberry with 145 points and 65 rebounds, Levi Williams with 59 points and 25 assists, Mikey Orawiec with 40 assists, 56 rebounds and 28 steals, and Lucas Dubs with 12 steals.

Addenbrooke Classical Academy

The Mustangs are currently in the 15th spot in the CHSAA Seeding Index with a 7-2 overall record, a 3-0 league record and are 4th in the Foothills league. ACA was able to beat Rocky Mountain Lutheran last week 61-40 and will be looking to get a couple more wins to end this week. The Mustangs will be traveling to Regis Groff on 1/22 and then the team will host Estes Park on 1/23.

Stat leaders for ACA are Asher Dobbs with 126 points and 28 rebounds, Tribby Lopez with 121 points and 95 rebounds, Corbin Burge with 79 points, 18 assists, and 20 steals, Caed Summers with 26 assists, 34 rebounds and 14 steals, and Calum Michelsen with 22 assists.

SkyView Academy

The Hawks round out the top 16 teams in the CHSAA Seeding Index with a 6-4 overall record, a 3-1 league record and are 5th in the Mile High League. Last week the team was able to get the win over Estes Park 74-30 and was also able to start the week off with a win over Belleview Christian 81-39. SkyView Academy will be looking to end the week with a win to get their win streak up to three games as they travel to Union Colony Prep tonight.

Leading the team on the stat board are Andrew Eschmann with 143 points, 31 assists, 38 rebounds, and 22 steals, Brady McGrath with 88 points and 49 rebounds, Brecken Atwell with 67 points and 57 rebounds, Clay Cosart with 33 assists and 10 steals, Moe Estacio with 19 assists, and Nathan Kamman with 14 steals.
