
Class 3A Girls Basketball Weekly Review and Preview

As the month of January wraps up and we head into the final month of the regular season, we take a look at the teams who are in the middle of the pack in the CHSAA Seeding Index at positions 17-32. These teams would make the playoffs if the season were to end today, but since we still have a month to go, we will keep an eye out and see where they end up towards the end of the season.

Platte Valley
The Broncos are currently sitting in the number 17 spot in the CHSAA Seeding Index with 9-5 overall record, a 2-2 league record and are 5th in the Patriot league. To end last week, Platte Valley was able to get a win over Frontier Academy 63-15 but started this week off with a loss to Wray 54-56. To end the month, Platte Valley will take on Wiggins on the road on 1/30 and will be looking to add another win to their record.
Stat leaders for the Broncos are Bryla Bunting with 152 points, 28 assists, 76 rebounds, and 54 steals, Delaney Uyemura with 110 points and 41 assists, Kyra Jessop with 105 points, Addy Grossnickle with 39 assists and 57 steals, and Dyra Koffler with 95 rebounds, and 46 steals.
Cedaredge
The Bruins are currently 10-4 overall on the season with a 6-2 league record and are 3rd in the Western Slope League. Cedaredge is on a 3 game winning streak after beating league opponents Grand Valley 46-19 and Aspen 49-14. The team will be looking to add more wins to their record to end the month and will take on Olathe on 1/30 at home and then they will go on the road to face Gunnison on 1/31.
Stat leaders for the Bruins are Sammy Denison with 135 points, 34 assists, and 33 steals, Rachel Brooks with 89 points and 52 rebounds, Macy Medill with 85 points and 99 rebounds, Lydia Tietz with 40 assists and 41 steals, Melyora Purdy with 25 assists, and Zeandra Robidouz with 73 rebounds and 32 steals.
Monte Vista
Last week, the Pirates were able to get a league win over Bayfield 80-2 but then fell to Centauri 26-23. The team started the week off, facing the Sargent Farmers which resulted in another loss 32-52. Monte Vista is now 7-5 overall on the season with a 1-2 league record and are currently 4th in the Intermountain league. The Pirates will be looking for a couple of wins to end January and will be taking on league opponents Montezuma-Cortez on 1/30 at home and then the team will be on the road to plat Ignacio on 1/31.
Stat leaders for Monte Vista are Heysenny Beltran with 72 points, 21 assists, 45 rebounds and 31 steals, Sienna Daniel with 57 points and 50 rebounds, Reminee Mascaranas with 55 points, 12 assists and 33 steals, Evie Hinds with 9 assists, Hannah Henderhan with 43 rebounds, and Destiny Pacheco with 24 steals.
The Vanguard School
The Vanguard School currently rounds out the top 20 teams in the CHSAA Seeing Index with a 5-5 overall record, a 301 league record, and are 5th in the Tri-Peaks league. The team was able to end last week with a win over league opponent La Junta 45-31 but start this week off with two losses against Pueblo East 42-59 and St. Mary’s 38-45. The Coursers will be looking to end the month with a win and will be hosting Manitou Springs tonight to end the week. Next week, the team will kick off the new month against Lamar on 2/3.
Stat leaders for the Coursers are Katelyn Wetters with 118 points, 51 assists, 30 rebounds and 39 steals, Emelina Bustamante with 114 points, 18 assists, and 39 steals, Ama Agbedor with 100 points, 90 rebounds and 37 steals, and Miya Wegner Brown with 17 assists and 49 rebounds.
St. Mary’s
St. Mary’s is currently 6-5 overall on the season with a 4-1 league record and are 4th in the Tri-Peaks league. The Pirates beat Banning Lewis last week 62-23 but fell to Buena Vista 52-59. The team started this week off with a win over The Vanguard School 45-38. The Pirates will be looking to add a couple of wins to their record before the end of the month and will be on the road to play Ellicott tonight and then will end the month facing CSCHS on 1/31.
Stat leaders for the team are Jaela Pedro with 162 points, 25 assists, 86 rebounds and 21 steals, Kylie Nail with 113 points and 33 steals, Carly Stewart with 59 points and 15 assists, Caroline Newkirk with 16 assists, Katharine Sabish with 38 rebounds and Kylie Lyon with 15 steals.
Manual
The Thunderbolts are 9-4 overall on the season with a 3-1 league record and are 5th in the City League. Manual has lost their last couple of games, fallings to DSST: Cedar 27-36 and Kennedy 28-30. The team will be looking to break their losing streak and add a win to their record and will play DSST: College View on 1/30. The team will then kick off February on 2/3 and will host DSST: Green Valley Ranch on 2/3.
Leading the team on the stat board are Dayjah Fox with 46 points, 32 rebounds, and 10 steals, Leilani Mack with 26 points, 5 assists, and 13 steals, Caylei Walker with 15 points, 2 assists, and 12 steals, Nau’jee Cross-Jones with 3 assists, La’Kaylia Byers with 9 rebounds, and Hannah Gonzales with 8 rebounds.
Brush
The Beetdiggers ended last week with a league loss to Wiggins 26-54 but was able to start this week off on a better note and beat Strasburg 51-40. Brush is now 7-7 overall on the season with a 2-3 league record and are sitting 7th in the Patriot league. Brush will be looking to get a win in their last game of January and will travel to Windsor Charter on 1/30. Then the team will start next week on the road at Resurrection Christian on 2/3.
Stat leaders for the Beetdiggers are Sidney Miller with 131 points and 105 rebounds, Jocelynn Middlemist with 68 points and 79 rebounds, Gracie martinez with 68 points, 16 assists, and 28 steals, Kalli Castrup with 24 assists and 35 steals, Piper Hickey with 14 assists and 26 steals, and Kyleigh Greenwood with 42 rebounds.
Highland
The Huskies are currently 5-7 overall on the season, 2-2 in league play and are in 6th in the Patriot League. To end last week, the team fell to Yuma 22-40 but was able to start this week off with a win over Frontier Academy 53-26. Highland will wrap up January hosting Wray on 1/31 and will be looking for a win to take momentum into February. To start the new month, the team will travel to Wiggins to play the Tigers on 2/3.
Stat leaders for the Huskies are Paislee Watson with 121 points, 17 assists, and 47 steals, Billie Mick with 56 points, 11 assists, and 26 steals, Nikki Quinones with 56 points, Abbie Martinez with 11 assists, 49 rebounds, and 30 steals, Vivianne Chase with 58 rebounds and Lucianne Chase with 52 rebounds.
SkyView Academy
The Hawks are currently 25th in the CHSAA Seeding Index with an 8-5 overall record, a 4-1 league record, and are 4th in the Mile High League. SkyView Academy is currently on a 4 game winning streak after beating Union Colony Prep last week 51-42, and beating Prospect Ridge Academy this week 35-15. The Hawks will be looking to continue their streak and will end the month facing off against the Lyons Lions on 1/30.
Leading the Hawk’s stat board are Evelyn Gilbert with 132 points, 135 rebounds and 26 steals, Ellie McLaughlin with 124 points, 18 assists, 99 rebounds, and 25 steals, Maggie Barrett with 100 points, 50 assists, and 63 steals, Rome Sauber with 27 assists, and Reagan Martin with 61 rebounds.
Peyton
The Peyton Panthers are 6-7 overall on the season and have started off league 0-1 and are sitting 2nd in the Black Forest League. Last week, Peyton fell to Thomas MacLaren School 33-40 and then started this week of with an overtime loss to Calhan 52-62. The last game the Panthers played resulted in a win over Banning Lewis Academy 38-22 which was the last January game for the team. Peyton will be looking to keep their momentum rolling and will kick off February on 2.7 against TPCA.
Stat leaders for the Panthers are McKinley Nickell with 13 points, 2 assists, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals, Sammie Nickell with 12 points, 1 assists, and 10 rebounds, Sara Mitchell with 6 points, 6 rebounds and 5 steals, and Bynlee Rizzuto with 2 assists and 4 steals.
Strasburg
The Indians are currently 4-8 overall on the season with a 1-4 league record and are in 9th in the Patriot League. Strasburg has lost their last two games, falling to Resurrection Christian 30-54 to end last week and falling to Brush 40-51 to start this week. The team will be looking to change their luck and get a win to end January and will be on the road to play Liberty Common on 1/30 and will host SkyView on 1/31.
Leading the Indian’s stat board are Taryn Laforce with 116 points and 119 rebounds, Wynne Winter with 73 points, 26 assists, and 43 steals, Addi Kent with 54 points, 27 assists, and 26 steals, McKenna Garcia with 9 assists, and Tatijana Rojahn with 59 rebounds and 25 steals.
Rye
The Thunderbolts ended last week with a win over Banning Lewis Academy 32-27 to bring their overall record to 7-5, their league record 4-2, and put them in 7th in the Tri-Peaks League. Rye will be looking to end the month with a win and will take on league opponent Buena Vista on 1/30. The team will then start February off hosting Florence on 2/2.
Stat leaders for Rye are Taci Ehrlich with 125 points, 32 assists, and 77 steals, Shiloh Rutledge with 85 points, 52 rebounds and 23 steals, Abrianna Chianelli with 75 points, 19 assists, 83 rebounds, and 29 steals, and Reese Simpson with 20 assists and 117 rebounds.
Liberty Common
The Eagles are currently 5-6 overall, 1-4 in league and are 8th in the Patriot league. Liberty Common has lost their last two games, ending last week with a loss to Wray 37-58 and starting this week off with a loss to Wiggins 26-42. The Eagles will be looking to change their luck around and will battle for a win over Strasburg on 1/30 and then will start February facing league opponent Windsor Charter on 2/3.
Gunnison
Rounding out the top 30 teams in the CHSAA Seeding Index, Gunnison is 5-9 overall on the season, 3-4 in league play and are 5th in the Western Slope League. The Cowboys were able to win their most recent game over Crested Butte this week 45-12 after they lost to North Fork last week 47-60. The Cowboys will be looking to end January with some wins and will take on league opponents Grand Valley on 1/30 and Cedaredge on 1/31.
Stat leaders for Meeker are Brooke Terry with 80 points, 12 assists, 30 rebounds, and 14 steals, Autumn Terry with 67 points, 14 assists, 24 rebounds, and 15 steals, Kaylee Vincent with 65 points and 26 rebounds, Merci Williams with 5 assists, and Ashlyn Cowan with 8 steals.
Platte Canyon
Platte Canyon is 7-6 overall on the season with a 1-1 league record and are 5th in the Frontier league. The Huskies were on a four-game winning streak after beating Front Range Christian 39-33 last week, but that streak was broken by Fort Lupton who beat the Huskies 46-51. Platte Canyon will be looking to get back on the winning side of things tonight and will play Jefferson tonight at home and then they will also host Middle Park on 1/31.
Stat leaders for the Huskies are Abigail Tomasko with 81 points, 15 assists, 54 rebounds and 23 steals, Racheal Hayes with 65 points and10 assists, Emma Flores with 60 points, 39 assists, 78 rebounds, and 34 steals, and Kadence Pietro with 42 rebounds.
Windsor Charter Academy
Sitting at 32 in the CHSAA Seeding Index, the Firebirds are 5-9 overall on the season with a 0-4 league record, and are in 10th in the Patriot league. The team is currently on a 5 game losing streak after falling to Loveland Classical 39-44 and Resurrection Christian 21-62. The team will be looking to break their loss streak and get a win to end the month and will play the Brush Beetdiggers on 1/30 and then they will start the new month off going to Liberty Common on 2/3.
Stat leaders for the Firebirds are Kylie Smith with 91 points, 20 assists, 52 rebounds, and 26 steals, Miley Hawkins with 78 points and 38 rebounds, Sadie Curry with 60 points, 36 assists, and 31 steals, Ella Grasmick with 14 assists and 20 steals, and Emerson Clark with 44 rebounds.
