
2A Girls Basketball Weekly Review and Preview
This week as the last month of the regular season kicks off, we take a look at the top 16 teams in the CHSAA Seeding Index and see the movement that has occurred in the last couple of weeks. As the last month of is here, teams will be battling for better position in the index and will try to guarantee their playoff positions with league titles.
Merino
Merino sits at the top of the 2A Seeding Index currently with a 15-1 overall record, a 2-0 league record and are currently in 1st in the Lower Platte league. Last week, the Rams were able to beat Yuma 46-24 but fell to Simla 47-55. This week the team started the new month off with a win over Fleming 55-22. Merino will be looking for a strong finish and to remain at the top of the pack with their last three regular season games which will be against Akron on 2/12, Otis on 2/13 and Holyoke on 2/20.
Stat leaders for Merino are Delaney Piel with 157 points, 58 assists, and 85 steals, Kya Piel with 135 points, 57 assists, and 39 steals, Jadelynn Powell with 131 points, 24 assists, 31 rebounds, and 41 steals, Jay Lynch with 61 rebounds and H Lambert with 28 rebounds.
Simla
The Cubs currently have their perfect record still intact at 13-0 overall on the season with a 2-0 league record, and the team is in 1st in the Black Forrest league. Last week, Simla was ablet to beat Limon 73-11, Byers 64-15 and Merino 55-47. This week, Merino started the last month of regular season play with a 62-12 win over Kiowa. The Cubs will be looking to keep their streak going in February and will play Monument Academy today on the road and then they will end the week in Salida taking on the Spartans on 2/7.
Leading the stat board for the Cubs are Carlee Cox with 143 points, 29 assists, 54 rebounds and 73 steals, Kinlee Cox with 133 points, Haylee Easler with 123 points, Brynlee Amendt with 49 assists, 48 rebounds and 74 steals, and Trenna Kocerha with 41 assists, 60 rebounds and 44 steals.
Sanford
Th Mustangs sit at number three in the CHSAA Seeding Index with a 14-1 overall record, a 3-0 league record, and are currently in 1st in the Southern Peaks League. Last week, Sanford was able to get two league wins, the first over Trinidad 44-14 and the second was over Sargent 45-29. Sanford will be looking to keep adding wins to their records in their last three games of the regular season, which will be against Monte Vista tonight, Center on 2/12, and Pagosa Springs on 2/20.
Sedgwick County
The Cougars currently have a 10-3 overall record, a 2-0 league record and are 3rd in the Lower Platte League. Sedgwick County is currently on a five game winning streak after beating Garden County 57-25, Perkins County 41-36, and Akron 62-47 last week and beating Leyton 60-11 to start February. The team will be looking to keep their momentum through February and will be playing Briggsdale on 2/7 to end this week.
Leading the teams stat board are Lainee Nein with 203 points, 39 assists, 83 rebounds, and 28 steals, Ryen Carlson with 127 points, 19 assists, and 20 steals, Piper Buettenback with 77 points, 19 assists, 77 rebounds and 27 steals, and Daryn Nein with 57 rebounds.
Sargent
Sargent is currently in the number 5 spot in the CHSAA Seeding Index with a 12-2 overall record, a 2-1 league record and are 2ndin the Southern Peaks League. Last week, the Farmers were able to beat Monte Vista 53-32 and Del Norte 57-29 but fell to Sanford 39-45. Sargent will be looking to bounce back after their loss and get some additional wins before the end of the season. The team will be travelling to South Park on 2/6 to end the week.
Leading the Farmers stat board are Kandace Pargin with 211 points, 32 assists, 74 rebounds, and 44 steals, Angelise Garcia with 174 points, 33 assists, and 72 steals, Kimberly Pargin with 98 points and 15 steals, Aubrey Naranjo with 13 assists and 36 rebounds, and Denver Holman with 39 rebounds.
Akron
Akron is currently 8-7 overall on the season with a 0-2 league record and the team is 4th in the Lower Platte League. The Rams ended January with a win over Briggsdale 44-32 but lost to Sedgwick County 47-62. The team will be looking to end the last month of the regular season with more wins added to their record. Akron will play Byers on 2/6 at home and then they will be on the road to take on Haxtun to end the week on 2/7.
Stat leaders for Akron are Molly O’Neil with 199 points, 32 assists, 136 rebounds, and 42 steals, Kashlee Randel with 97 points, 52 assists, 76 rebounds and 58 steals, AnnMarie Stahn with 60 points, Addison Weis with 11 assists, and Taylor Benish with 52 rebounds and 13 steals.
Plateau Valley
The Cowboys are currently 10-3 overall on the season with a 4-1 league record and are 2nd in the Western Slope League. Plateau Valley ended January with a loss to Rangely 41-54 and will be looking to change their luck around in the last month of regular season games. To kick off February, the Cowboys will play Meeker tonight at home and then they will also host Vail Christian on 2/6 to end the week.
Leading the team on the stat board are Macy Bevan with 159 points and 75 rebounds, Presley Hawkins with 143 points, 66 rebounds, and 36 steals, Lili Taylor with 77 points, 33 assists, 63 rebounds, and 51 steals, Lexi Taylor with 41 assists, and Bailee Taylor with 25 assists and 50 steals.
Rangely
The Panthers are currently 10-3 overall on the season with a 6-0 league record and are 1st in the Western Slope League. Rangely ended January with wins over Plateau Valley with 54-41 and De Beque 52-16. The team will be looking to start the last month of the regular season with a win and will be taking on Little Snake River tonight and then they will host Vail Christian to end the week on 2/7.
Leading the team on the stat board are Aubriann Tapia with 160 points, 94 rebounds, and 49 steals, Aubrey Yates with 150 points, 25 assists, and 48 steals, Tegan Behunin with 101 points, 27 assists, 70 rebounds, and 55 steals, and RyLee Kenney with 46 assists.
Heritage Christian
The Eagles sit at 11-3 overall on the season with a 8-0 league record and are 1st in the Mile High League. Heritage Christian were able to get wins over Union Colony Prep 58-19 and Clear Creek 61-21 but fell to Briggsdale 56-62 last week. This week, the team started off with a win over Lyons 52-33. The Eagles will be looking to continue winning in February and will play next week on the road at Front Range Christian on 2/14.
Holyoke
The Dragons round out the top 10 teams in the CHSAA Seeding Index with an 11-5 overall record, a 2-0 league record and are 2ndin the Lower Platte league. Holyoke is on a six game winning streak after they beat Perkins County 53-29, Chase County 51-27, Haxtun 61-31, and started February off with a win over Cheyenne Wells 53-38. Holyoke will be looking to add to their win streak and will travel to Caliche on 2/6 to end their first week of February play.
Stat leaders for the Dragons are Raia Sprague with 279 points, 91 rebounds, and 65 steals, Ellie Kleve with 176 points and 140 rebounds, Sophia Bencomo with 65 points, Aneesa Colglazier with 45 assists, 136 rebounds, and 36 steals, Lia Sprague with 42 assists and 30 steals, and Aubrey Bieber with 23 assists.
Byers
Byers is currently 7-7 on the season with an 0-2 league record and are 6th in the Union Pacific League. Last week the team fell to Simla 15-64 but was able to get a win over Hi-Plains 42-41 before they fell to Burlington 33-37. This week, the Bulldogs started February off with a loss to Flagler 29-48 and will be looking to change their luck around as they move further into February. The team will play Akron on 2/6 on the road and then they will come home to host Stratton on 2/7.
Leading Byers on the stat board are Leyla Sayler with 110 pointsand 70 rebounds. Madilee Olsen with 94 points, 43 assists, 65 rebounds and 38 steals, Abu Green with 78 points, 15 assists, 49 rebounds, and 18 steals, Danica Lancaster with 15 assists, and Sydney Smith with 19 steals.
Burlington
The Cougars are sitting at 7-5 overall on the season with a 2-1 league record and are 3rd in the Union Pacific league. Burlington ended January with a loss to Flagler 43-46 and a win over Byers 37-33 but started February off with a loss to Goodland 19-57. The Cougars will be looking for a bounce back to add more wins to their record and will face Idalia on 2/6 and Limon in a league game on 2/7. Next week, the team will start games by hosting Flaming on 2/10.
Leading the stat board for Burlington are Bethany Cure with 128 points, 32 assists, 77 rebounds, and 41 steals, Lynzee Neal with 110 points, 39 assists, 75 rebounds, and 51 steals, My (Marilena) Lee with 79 points, 21 assists, and 30 steals, and Nevaeh Cure with 46 rebounds.
Swink
The Lions are 10-5 overall on the season with a 5-1 league record and are 2nd in the Santa Fe League. Last week, Swink fell to Hoehne 37-46 but was able to turn around and get wins over Las Animas 31-30 last week and Crowley County 47-26 this week. Swink will be looking to continue winning and will host Holly tonight and then will play McClave also at home to start next week on 2/10.
Stat leaders for Swink are Jocelynn James with 172 points, 38 assists, and 33 steals, Taylor Mendenhall with 120 points and 88 rebounds, Laney James with 91 points and 29 assists, Briana McElroy with 19 assists and 28 steals, Addie Mills with 66 rebounds and 22 steals, and Daisy Heberlie with 65 rebounds.
Calhan
Calhan continues to move their way up the seeding index and are 11-4 overall on the season with a 2-0 league record and are sitting 2nd in the Black Forrest league. Last week the team ended January with a win over Pikes Peak Christian 50-14 and a loss to Thomas MacLaren 38-54. This week thew team kicked off games with a win over Monument Academy 61-15. Tonight the team will take on ECA and then they will end the week on the road in Las Animas on 2/7.
Leading the Bulldogs’ stat board are Kenidee Stewart with 182 points, Fallyn Mallette with 155 points, 38 assists, Savannah Stewart with 146 points, 44 assists, 68 rebounds, and 55 steals, Willow Levicki with 48 assists, 157 rebounds, and 85 steals, and Aubrie Waugh with 80 rebounds.
James Irwin
The Jaguars are 9-3 overall on the season, 0-1 in league play, are 1st in the tri-Peaks league and are 15th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. James Irwin ended last week with wins over Lamar 40-34 and Ellicott 47-36 and continued their wins so far this week over Liberty Tree Academy 70-19 and Woodland Park 45-29. The team will be looking to continue their 5 game win streak and will play La Junta on the road on 2.6 to end this week and will start next week off in CSCHS on 2/11.
Stat leaders for James Irwin are Hannah Meier with 146 points, 21 assists, 93 rebounds, and 65 steals, Mia Busby with 112 points, 37 assists, 197 rebounds, and 54 steals, Stella Reed with 109 points and 130 rebounds, and Syrai Rigsby with 29 assists and 41 steals.
Loveland Classical
Loveland Classical is currently 12-3 overall on the season, 5-0 in league play, are 1st in the Foothills league and round out the top 16 teams in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The team kick off February with wins over Estes Park 54-16, Denver Jewish Day 40-25 and STEMSHR 46-14. The Lions will be looking to continue winning as they head towards the end of the regular season and will be playing Flatirons Academy on 2/6 and then will play next week on 2/9 against Two Roads Charter.
Stat leaders for Loveland Classical are Kaelyn Doan with 107 points, 4 assists, and 29 rebounds, Abigail Ruppert with 86 points,, 3 assists, 21 rebounds, and 32 steals, Keira Doan with 68 points, 4 assists, 26 rebounds and 25 steals, and Gracie Saxton with 22 steals.
