
CLASS 1A BOYS BASKETBALL REPORT

The final month of the regular season is upon us, and we’re shifting our focus this week to the teams that currently hold spots 17-32 in the Thursday morning release of the CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index.

#17 DENVER JEWISH DAY (8-6)
Denver Jewish Day’s modest two-game winning streak was snapped by #6 Flatirons Academy 63-36 last Thursday. Solly Bielsky accounted for 17 points in the loss. The Tigers were able to bounce back on Tuesday when they took down 2A #21 Loveland Classical by a 48-41 tally. Bielsky went for 23 points and 10 rebounds in that contest. The Tigers host 3A #6 Peyton on Thursday, and will visit 2A #13 Campion Academy on Monday. They will also go to #9 Denver Waldorf next Tuesday for a key 5280 showdown. The Tigers meet up with #22 Denver Academy of Torah on Wednesday.
#18 OURAY (9-5)
The Trojans avoided consecutive losses by taking a 63-19 win over 2A #47 Dove Creek on Tuesday, with Cavan Pasek going for 19 points. Ouray has a San Juan game at 2A #28 Dolores on Friday and one on Saturday against 2A #53 Mancos. The Trojans go to 3A #18 Olathe next Tuesday.
#19 KIM/BRANSON (8-6)
The Mustangs got their third win in four contests by beating #35 Eads 57-30 last Saturday. Trotter Watkins had a double-double of 22 points and 14 rebounds, and Will Doherty added 21 points. Kim/Branson goes to #9 Sangre de Cristo on Thursday, and will host 2A #27 Hoehne on Saturday.
#20 IDALIA (7-5)
Idalia won its second straight, and sixth in seven, by taking a YWKC win over #23 Arickaree/Woodlin last Friday, 50-42. Broderick Kite tallied 23 points and eight rebounds, and Kolby Morris added 14 points and eight boards. The Wolves have a busy weekend, starting with a league game at home against #45 Bethune on Thursday. They will travel to 2A #39 Burlington on Friday, and #29 Kit Carson on Saturday.
#21 HOLLY (7-5)
It’s been two weeks since Holly last hit the court, and the Wildcats ride a two-game winning streak into their return on Thursday at 2A #54 Swink. Holly hosts #49 South Baca on Saturday, and #12 Wiley on Tuesday, with both games counting in the Arkansas Valley standings.
#22 DENVER ACADEMY OF TORAH (8-7)
The Wolves were involved in a tournament last weekend, and went 2-2. Both wins came against Columbus Torah Academy (OH). DAT travels to Ambleside on Thursday, and heads to Denver Jewish Day next Wednesday.
#23 ARICKAREE/WOODLIN (7-7)
Arickaree/Woodlin lost both of its games last week, falling to 2A #2 Byers 68-27 and to Idalia by the 50-42 count. Jaxson Cordell had 18 points for the Bison in the latter of those two losses. The Bison host #11 Otis in YWKC play on Friday, and will host Burlington on Tuesday.
#24 CALICHE (9-6)
Caliche has split its last two games, falling in a LPAA contest against 2A #12 Merino 58-38 last Friday, and beating #43 Lone Star 83-43 on Tuesday. Avery Bell had 10 points and 10 rebounds in the loss. The Buffs have another league contest on Friday at 2A #25 Holyoke, and they will host #3 Prairie on Tuesday in a big non-league match-up.
#25 PIKES PEAK CHRISTIAN (9-5)
With wins over #36 Hanover (57-46) and 2A #38 Calhan (43-40 OT), the Eagles extended their streak to five, but that ended with a 71-37 loss to 3A #29 Thomas MacLaren. PPC didn’t stay down long, as it picked up a 62-57 win over 2A #35 Custer County on Tuesday. Jeremiah Wehner led the Eagles with 21 points in that victory, and Reggie Harmon added a double-double of 12 points and 18 boards. The Eagles travel to #14 Evangel Christian Academy on Friday in Black Forest play, and will visit 2A #7 Front Range Christian on Saturday. They host Bethune on Tuesday.
#26 CHERAW (7-7)
Cheraw’s slide reached four games with losses to Eads (58-53) and 2A #22 Las Animas (51-47) over the last week. William Ledbetter scored 24 points in the High Plains league loss to Eads. The Wolverines travel to #1 McClave for another league contest on Thursday, and they go to #47 La Veta on Friday.
#27 FRONT RANGE BAPTIST (5-9)
The lone game for the Falcons over the past week came on Thursday against 3A #15 Lotus School for Excellence. It went in the books as the third straight loss for Front Range Baptist, 87-51. Nathan Jacques posted a double-double of 23 points and 14 rebounds in the contest. Henry Yeary added 19 points. The Falcons host Denver Waldorf in 5280 play on Thursday, and will host Loveland Protestant Reformed Christian on Friday. Front Range Baptist also hosts St. John Paul the Great on Tuesday.
#28 SPRINGFIELD (5-8)
Kagen Schroder scored 20 points for the Longhorns last Saturday, as they broke a two-game skid with a 62-36 win over #50 Manzanola. Brennan Rothman added 15 points. Springfield made it two straight wins on Tuesday, 62-33 over #49 South Baca. Schroder again scored 20 points. Springfield visits #39 Walsh in Arkansas Valley play on Friday, and travels to #34 Flagler on Saturday. The road stretch continues on Tuesday, when the Longhorns visit Stanton County (KS).
#29 KIT CARSON (5-9)
The Wildcats faced a pair of highly-ranked squads last week, and came away with a pair of losses. Kit Carson fell to #4 Stratton 58-34 on Friday, and 57-36 to ECA on Saturday. Levi Mayhan had 12 points and seven rebounds in the latter of those two losses. Friday has the Wildcats hosting their Cheyenne County rivals, #5 Cheyenne Wells in High Plains league action. Kit Carson is also home on Saturday, hosting Idalia.
#30 CENTENNIAL (7-5)
Centennial has put two consecutive wins in the bank, as the Rams took care of #55 Cripple Creek-Victor 66-38 on Thursday, and #31 Cotopaxi 57-30 on Tuesday. Josiah Rael and Bajung Nginoe scored 29 and 15 points, respectively, against Cripple Creek-Victor, and Nginoe had a double-double of 17 points and 13 rebounds against the Pirates. Home games in the Southern Peaks against #15 Sierra Grande on Friday, and #54 Antonito on Saturday await the Rams.
#31 COTOPAXI (7-6)
That 57-30 loss to Centennial on Tuesday was the second in a row for the Pirates, who lost to Sangre de Cristo 60-17 on Saturday. David Sovocool nearly had a double-double on Tuesday, posting 20 points and nine rebounds. Cotopaxi hosts #40 Moffat on Thursday, and travels to 2A #17 Center on Saturday.
#32 ROCKY MOUNTAIN LUTHERAN (7-7)
Rocky Mountain Lutheran broke a four-game losing streak with a 55-51 win over #33 Mile High Academy on Tuesday. None of the four losses had been by more than nine points, and two were decided in overtime. In the win on Tuesday, Gavin Borchardt recorded a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds. Blake Harris led the Eagles with 16 points. The Eagles challenge Lotus School for Excellence on the road on Thursday, and will visit 2A #50 Ascent Classical Academy on Friday. They will host #37 Weldon Valley on Tuesday.
