CLASS 1A GIRLS BASKETBALL REPORT

A lot of focus is paid to the top teams in the poll, but with the regular season in its final month, it’s time to take a look at the teams currently holding down the last 16 qualifying spots in the CHSAA Selection and Seeding Index. That would be spots 17-32 in the Thursday morning release of the metric.

#17 KIM/BRANSON (9-6)

The Lady Mustangs opened Arkansas Valley play on Tuesday with a 51-23 win over Wiley. They had lost their two previous outings, to the top two teams in the Seeding Index, McClave and Eads. Kim/Branson goes to #35 Sangre de Cristo on Thursday, and hosts 2A #21 Hoehne on Saturday.

#18 COTOPAXI (9-4)

In the past week, Cotopaxi picked up wins over Lake City Community (40-12) and Sangre de Cristo (42-19), running its streak to four consecutive victories, but that was snapped on Tuesday. The Lady Pirates fell 32-29 to #39 Centennial. They will attempt to get back in the win column on Thursday when they host #36 Moffat. Cotopaxi will also go to 2A #18 Center on Saturday.

#19 GENOA-HUGO/KARVAL (7-6)

The Lady Pirates dominated their last two opponents, Bethune and Hanover, to the tune of a combined tally of 96-6. They beat Bethune 49-4 last Thursday, and followed that with a 47-2 victory over Hanover on Saturday. Lexi James had 12 points and eight rebounds in the first of those two games, and followed with 10 and seven in the latter. The Lady Pirates will put their three-game winning streak on the line at #8 Stratton on Thursday in Union Pacific league action. Genoa-Hugo/Karval will host Miami-Yoder next Tuesday.

#20 KIT CARSON (7-7)

Kit Carson suffered a pair of losses to top-10 foes last weekend, dropping a 53-34 decision at home to Stratton on Friday, and then going on the road to #3 Evangel Christian Academy on Saturday and falling 51-42. Avery Johnson went for 17 points and seven rebounds against Stratton, and she scored 18 points against ECA. Allyssa Gekeler posted a double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds in the ECA loss. The Lady Wildcats host #33 Cheyenne Wells in their annual rivalry game on Friday, and will welcome #6 Idalia to town on Saturday.

#21 CREEDE (11-5)

Creede’s been hot lately, running its winning streak to five with victories over Sangre de Cristo (57-38), #25 Primero (46-24), and #49 Antonito (55-32) in the last week. Lucy Brittain was in double figures all three games, scoring 16, 18, and 20 points. The Lady Miners are off until next weekend.

#22 WELDON VALLEY (8-6)

The Lady Warriors ran their winning streak to four by beating #27 Deer Trail 41-30 on Thursday, and Banner County (NE) 38-28 on Saturday, before falling to Loveland Protestant Reformed Christian 53-35 on Tuesday. Haylee Nelson posted double-doubles of 16 points and 16 rebounds, and 13 and 18 in the two wins. Weldon Valley travels to #5 Fleming for a North Central clash on Friday, and will be at #40 Rocky Mountain Lutheran next Tuesday. The Lady Warriors will host #24 Mile High Academy next Wednesday.

#23 HI-PLAINS (5-9)

Hi-Plains had its losing streak reach four games with narrow defeats by 2A #11 Byers (42-41) and #11 Briggsdale (37-33) last weekend. But, the Lady Patriots broke that slide with a 36-26 win against Cheyenne Wells on Saturday. The Lady Patriots are on the road twice this weekend, visiting #12 Flagler on Friday, and #38 Otis on Friday. The latter of those is in YWKC league play.

#24 MILE HIGH ACADEMY (7-6)

Mile High Academy has been extremely busy, playing six games in the last week. The Lady Mustangs won all six. They took five tournament wins last weekend, and then took down Rocky Mountain Lutheran 32-28 in 5280 action on Tuesday. Kylie Helm went for 14 points and 10 rebounds in that league victory. The Lady Mustangs will host 2A #32 Twin Peaks Classical Academy on Monday, and visit Weldon Valley on Wednesday.

#25 PRIMERO (8-7)

Primero enters the weekend on a two-game slide, following its 46-24 loss at Creede with a 39-14 defeat by Trinidad on Tuesday. The Lady Bulldogs head to 2A #35 Custer County on Thursday, and will host #53 Hanover on Friday.

#26 LONE STAR (4-7)

Playing for the first time in more than 10 days, Lone Star suffered a 58-38 loss at #7 Caliche on Tuesday. It was the second straight loss for the Lady Longhorns, who had fallen to Idalia in their previous outing. Lone Star hosts Potter-Dix (NE) on Thursday, and then has a pair of YWKC league games on tap. The Lady Longhorns host #55 Bethune on Saturday, and Otis on Tuesday.

#27 DEER TRAIL (8-7)

After its 41-30 non-league loss to Weldon Valley last Thursday, Deer Trail split a pair of Union Pacific games, beating 2A Limon 41-32, and falling to Stratton 51-13. Megan Donovan led a trio of Lady Eagles in double figures in the win over Limon, scoring 14 points. Fatuma Hussein tossed in 13, and Kylie Bryant added 10. The Lady Eagles will travel to #45 Cripple Creek-Victor on Thursday, and then visit Byers on Tuesday.

#28 MIAMI-YODER (8-5)

Miami-Yoder made it two straight in the win column by beating Cripple Creek-Victor 42-28 last Saturday. Madison Kragel led the way with a double-double of 19 points and 24 rebounds. Sixteen of those came on the offensive glass. Her point and rebound totals were both season highs. The Lady Buffs will be home on Thursday against 2A #56 The Colorado Springs School, and they will go to Hanover on Saturday. Next Tuesday has a road game at Genoa-Hugo/Karval on the slate for the Lady Buffs.

#29 DE BEQUE (6-9)

The Lady Dragons fell twice last weekend, dropping a 53-48 decision to North Park in overtime, and then losing to 2A #8 Rangely 52-16. They’ve lost four of their last five overall. Ileeyah Herrera hit five three-pointers and scored a career-high 28 points in the loss to North Park. De Beque hosts 2A #27 Soroco on Saturday.

#30 PEETZ (6-9)

Peetz has posted three straight wins, beating 2A #47 Belleview Christian (49-32), 2A #43 Union Colony Prep (60-52), and Banner County (NE) 48-26. It’s the second three-game winning streak of the season for the Lady Bulldogs, and has given them the highest win total for the program since the 2014-15 season. They’ll put the streak on the line at Briggsdale on Friday in NCL play. Peetz will also host Potter-Dix (NE) on Tuesday.

#31 NORTH PARK (4-7)

The 53-48 overtime win over De Beque was the lone victory for North Park in its last four games. The Lady Wildcats, who got 23 points from Micah Wolvington in that win, were handed a 29-19 loss by 2A #26 Vail Mountain on Saturday. North Park visits 2A #41 Hayden on Friday, and 2A #24 Caprock Academy on Saturday. Both are Western Slope games.

#32 SOUTH BACA (7-9)

Three losses over the last week have extended South Baca’s slide to four. The Lady Patriots dropped games to Cheyenne Wells (40-35), 2A #40 Crowley County (51-47), and #15 Springfield (65-29). Sarah Elmore scored 22 against Cheyenne Wells, and 33 against Crowley County. She grabbed nine rebounds in both contests. The Lady Patriots will travel #43 Holly on Saturday for an Ark Valley affair.
