Class 2A Girls Basketball Weekly Review and Preview

As the final few weeks of the regular season approach, we take a look at the teams who are leading their respective leagues and who we should see enter the playoffs. Some teams may only hold the title for a few more games while others are fighting to dethrone the top teams.

Simla

Simla remains perfect on the season with a 15-0 overall record. The Cubs are currently sitting in 2nd in the CHSAA Seeding Index and are 1st in the Black Forrest League with a 3-0 league record. So far in February, the team has defeated Kiowa 62-12, Monument Academy 76-4 and Salida 58-48. Simla will be striving to keep their perfect record intact and will be taking on ECA tonight at home and then they will go on the road to McClave to end this week on 2/14. Next week, the Cubs will start play off by hosting Caliche on 2/16 and then they will travel to Elbert on 2/17.

Leading the team on the stat board for the season so far are Carlee Cox with 172 points, 58 assists, 64 rebounds, and 83 steals, Kinlee Cox with 151 points, Katie Gotschall with 142 points, Brynlee Amendt with 57 assists, 72 rebounds and 86 steals, and Trenna Kocerha with 51 assists, 72 rebounds and 48 steals.

James Irwin

Sitting at 18 in the CHSAA Seeding index, James Irwin is 9-5 overall on the season, 0-2 in league play and are 1st in the 2A Tri-Peaks league. The Jaguars are 2-2 in February, winning their games over Liberty Tree Academy 70-19 and Woodland Park 45-29 but losing to La Junta 40-52 and CSCHS 12-64. James Irwin will be looking to get more wins added to their record in the next week of play as they play Buena Vista tonight on the road and then host Banning Lewis Academy on 2/14 to end the week.

Stat leaders for James Irwin are Hannah Meier with 176 points, 26 assists, 108 rebounds, and 78 steals, Stella Reed with 124 points and 150 rebounds, Mia Busby with 112 points, 38 assists, 204 rebounds and 55 steals, and Syrai Rigsby with 32 assists and 43 steals.

Burlington

Burlington is currently 17 in the CHSAA Seeding Index with an 8-7 overall record, a 3-1 league record, and they are currently sitting 2nd in the Union Pacific League behind Stratton. The Cougars have not had games end with the desired outcome in February, with their only win this month being over Limon 54-26 and with losses to Goodland 19-57, Idalia 48-55 in OT, and Fleming 49-52. Burlington will be looking to flip the script and get some wins under their belt to end the week and will be playing Stratton tonight at home for the league title and then they will travel to Sedgwick County to end the week on 2/14.

Leading the stats for the team are Bethany Cure with 171 points, 42 assists, 116 rebounds, and 57 steals, Lynzee Neal with 139 points, 47 assists, 106 rebounds, and 65 steals, My (Marilena) Lee with 102 points, 28 assists, and 35 steals, and Nevaeh Cure with 58 rebounds.

Custer County

Custer County leads the West Central league with a 7-8 overall record and a 2-0 league record. The Bobcats currently sit at 41 in the seeding index with wins in February over Peike Peak Christian 50-37 and Primero 58-36, but lost to Trinidad 28-43, Crested Butte 22-24, and Florence 29-34. Custer County will be looking to end their season on a high note and add some wins to their records and will end the season facing Vail Christian today on the road, will host Sargent on 2/13 and ECA on 2/16 and then they will travel to Cotopaxi on 2/18 to end the regular season.

Leading the team on the stat board are Hayden Hampton with 154 points, 15 assists, 59 rebounds, and 52 steals, Marin Foster with 36 points, 11 assists, 59 rebounds and 32 steals, Addie Banning with 29 points, Stephanie Lewis with 11 assists and 26 steals, and Kathryn Weber with 41 rebounds.

Rangely

With an 11-4 overall record and a 7-0 league record, Rangely currently sits at the number eight spot in the CHSAA Seeding Index and are 1st in the Western Slope League. The Panthers lost their first game in February, falling to Little Snake River 50-57 but was able to bounce back and get the win over Vail Christian 77-22. The team will be looking to end their regular season with more wins added to their record and will be playing West Grand on 2/14, Caprock Academy on 2/19, and Grand Valley on 2/21.

Leading the teams stat board for the season are Aubrianna Tapia with 185 points, 120 rebounds and 51 steals, Aubrey Yates with 179 points, 40 assists, and 57 steals, Tegan Behunin with 127 points, 33 assists, 81 rebounds, 65 steals, RyLee Kenney with 56 assists, and Addison Scott with 96 rebounds.

Loveland Classical

The Lions sit at the top of the Foothills league with a 14-4 overall record, a 7-0 league record, and are 15th in the seeding index. Since the start of February, Loveland Classical has beat Estes Park 54-16, Denver Jewish Day 40-35, STEMSHR 46-14, Two Roads Charter 41-21, and TPCA 57-33, but lost to Flatirons Academy 38-40. The team has only two games left for the regular season and will be looking to add both of them to the win column. These games will be against Heritage Christian today, and GVCA on 2/18.

Leading the stat board for Loveland Classical are Kaelyn Doan with 143 points, 9 assists, and 40 rebounds, Abigail Ruppert with 109 points, 5 assists, and 44 steals, Keira Doan with 107 points, 5 assists, 36 rebounds and 40 steals, Lara Reindel with 30 rebounds, and Gracie Saxton with 35 steals.

Merino

Sitting at the top of the Lower Platte League and the CHSAA Seeding Index, Merino is 16-1 overall on the season and 3-0 in league play. Since their loss to Simla to end January (47-55), the Rams have won both of their games in February which were over Fleming 55-22 and Sedgwick County 55-17. The team will be looking to end their regular season with three additional wins and to remain at the top of the seeding index. Merinos last games of the regular season will be over Akron tonight at home, Otis on 2/13 at home and Holyoke on the road on 2/20.

Stat leaders for Merino are Delany Piel with 216 points, 79 assists, 44 rebounds and 115 steals, Kya Piel with 197 points, 84 assists, and 56 steals, Jadelynn Powell with 166 points, 37 assists, 48 rebounds, and 59 steals, and Jay Lynch with 104 rebounds.

Hoehne

The Farmers are first in the Santa Fe League with a 5-0 league record and a 10-7 overall record. The team is 21st in the seeding index with recent wins over Rocky Ford 35-31, La Veta 60-15, and Sangre de Cristo 51-16 and a loss to Kim/Branson 26-41. Hoehne will be looking to add more wins to their record and will try to move up the seeding index as the end of the regular season nears. This week the team will end play by hosting SCA on 2/13 and they will start next week off with a road trip to Center on 2/17.

Stat leaders for the Farmers are Paisley San Roman with 133 points, 28 assists, 69 rebounds, and 39 steals, Aspen Garrison with 109 points, Isabella Chacon with 108 points, 51 assists, and 31 steals, Mikenna Dasko with 50 assists, 63 rebounds and 47 steals, and Taylor Trujillo with 53 rebounds.

Sanford

Leading the Southern Peaks league, Sanford is 3rd in the CHSAA Seeding Index with a 16-1 overall record and a 4-0 league record. Since their lone loss to Centauri 42-46, the Mustangs have beat all league opponents which were Trinidad 44-14, Sargent 45-39, Monte Vista 48-30 and South Park 58-16. The team will be looking to add three more wins to their record to end the regular season which will be against Center tonight, Del Norte on 2/13 and Pagosa Springs on 2/20.

Heritage Christian

Sitting at number nine in the CHSAA Seeding Index, Heritage Christian is 11-4 overall, 8-0 in league and are 1st in the Mile High League. The Eagles started February off with a win over Lyons 52-33 but then fell to Sedgwick County 33-49. The team will be looking to end the season with more wins added to their record. They will start the final push to the end of the regular season with a road game tonight against Loveland Classical, a road game to Front Range Christian on 2/14, and next week they will host Estes Park on 2/17.

Dove Creek

The Bulldogs are 12-5 overall on the season, 6-2 in league play, are 2nd in the San Juan League behind Nucla, and are 19 in the CHSAA Seeding Index. Dove Creek started the month off with a win over Ouray 54-42 but then fell to Nucla 20-43 but was able to rebound and get a win over Telluride 30-16. Dove Creek will be looking to add more wins to their record to end the regular season and will start the last push against Montezuma-Cortez on 2/13 and Dolores on 2/14. Next week the team will start games off with Mancos on 2/17.

Stat leaders for Dove Creek are Taylor Hampton with 267 points, 18 assists, 193 rebounds, and 61 steals, Hadley Hatfield with 126 points, 84 assists, and 64 steals, Mykaela Fury with 65 points, 24 assists, 115 rebounds and 53 steals, and Leah Barnett with 59 rebounds.
