Class 2A Wrestling Regionals Preview
By Tyler Buhr
Four regional tournaments will sort contenders from pretenders and decide which wrestlers get to chase state hardware. In 2A, every pin, tech‑fall and fourth‑place match matters — depth and bonus points will matter as much as star power. This preview breaks down each region’s teams, the individuals most likely to swing the team race, and the bubble matches to watch that could rewrite the statewide picture.

Class 2A Team Rankings
1-Cedaredge
2-Highland
3-Meeker
4-Rocky Ford
5-North Fork
6-Buena Vista
7-Ignacio
8-Fowler
9-Crowley County
10-Wray
Region 1 – Stacked – 4 top ten Teams
Teams: Cedaredge, Mancos, Wray, Clear Creek, Dolores, Dove Creek, Hayden, Ignacio, Lake County, Meeker, Norwood, Nucla, Olathe, Platte Canyon, Rangely, Sorocco, West Grand
What to Watch
- Cedaredge – #1 team in the state for a reason but its not a given. Got 4-5 kids near the bubble they will need to get in to pull away.
- Meeker– several kids that are locks to go but a handful that may have to do it that harder way
- Ignacio – not deep but they do have some wrestlers that will be vying for a regional championship
- Wray – overall solid but they will need some matches to go their way to push it
- 106 – at least six ranked kids
- 138 – possibly 7 ranked wrestlers in the bracket
- 165 – 6 ranked wrestlers including 1,3,4, and 5. Could see some state preview matches here
State Impact
Several teams will be leaving ranked wrestlers home next week with this stacked of a region. What openings will it present for other teams?
Region 2 –Wide Open – 1 top ten team
Teams: Highland, Center, Yuma, Akron, Byers, Dayspring Christian, Forge Christian, Gilpin County, Golden View Classical, Holyoke, Kiowa, Liberty Joes, Limon, Lyons, Merino, North Park, Wiggins
What to watch
- Highland – got a handful sitting in a really good spot but they could use a few more to make that state push. May be able to get it from this region though
- Dark Horses – Akron quite a few guys that may benefit from this region and make an impact at state because of this. Yuma and Wiggins – similar to Akron but more kids on the bubble
- 190 – Got #1 and #2 as well as #4 and #5. Must watch!
State Impact
Dark Horses from this region will qualify some lower ranked or unranked kids and could we see them make a team impact at the state level? Possibly.
Region 3 – Solid -3 Top Ten Teams
Teams: Rocky Ford, Sedgewick County/Fleming, Burlington, Calhan, Cheyenne Wells, Colorado Springs Christian, County Line, Crowley County, Ellicott, Fowler, Holly, Las Animas, Manzanola, Peyton, Simla, Springfield, Stratton
What to watch
- Rocky Ford – around 6 sitting in a great spot but another handful near that bubble, can they push 10 through?
- Crowley County – not deep but have quality, looking to get a few regional champs and maybe sneak some unranked through
- Fowler – Got a solid group looking to make an impact on the front side. Depending on matchups I could see them push Rocky for the team regional title.
- 113 – #1,2, and 4, must watch
- 126 – 6-7 ranked wrestlers in the bracket
- 285 – state finals preview? Spires vs Ocana
State Impact
It’s a solid region but not over the top full. There will be some unranked kids come out and I could see some unranked teams come out of here with a solid group of guys headed to state. Look to see what happens with Las Animas, Burlington, and Sedgewick County/Fleming as well.
Region 4 – Upset? – 2 Top Ten Teams
Teams: North Fork, Buena Vista, Monte Vista, Antonito, Custer County, Del Norte, Hanover, La Veta, Primero, Rye, Sargent, Sierra Grande/Centennial, Swink, Trinidad, Walsenburg
What to watch
- North Fork – Definitely feeling good where there sitting. Handful of guys that will challenge for regional titles.
- Buena Vista – Upperweights – not very deep but what they have are studs.
- Maybe not so Dark of Horses? – Trinidad and Monte Vista – don’t count these teams out, teams with a lot of tradition of success and maybe a little luck and I could see these teams really make a push here and shake things up in the team races.
- 106 – three wrestlers in the top 5
- 157 – possible state finals preview? Flores vs Hamsath
State Impact
Honestly not the toughest region out there as a whole. Will be very interesting to watch and see who comes out on top and how many kids these teams will push through to state.
