
Class 2A Girls Basketball Weekly Review and Preview

This week is the last week of the regular season! As teams fight for final positions in the CHSAA Seeding Index, we look at the top 8 teams who are looking to host during Regionals next week, and we look at the current last 6 teams inside of the playoff bubble, and the first two teams who are outside, hoping to find a way into the postseason.

Merino
Merino still remains at the top of the 2A seeding Index with a 20-1 overall record, a 5-0 league record and in 1st in the Lower Platt League. Last week the rams were able to get the win over Holyoke 66-36 and then they started this week off with a win over Limon 66-14. The team will end their regular season off in a tournament where they will first face Holyoke on 2/27, then the team will be getting ready to host regionals next week.
Stat leaders for the Rams are Delaney Piel with 265 points, 97 assists, 59 rebounds and 132 steals, Kya Piel with 220 points, 94 assists, and 59 steals, Jadelynn Powell 196 points, 42 assists, 57 rebounds and 72 steals, and Jay Lynch with 112 rebounds.
Simla
Simla remains undefeated in the regular season with a 22-0 overall record, a 3-0 league record are 2nd in the Black Forrest league, and sit in the number 2 spot in the CHSAA Seeding Index. Last week, the team beat Burlington 58-36 and Holyoke 62-22. This week the team got a win over Bennett 63-18 and will be looking to end their regular season with their perfect record intact as they travel to Calhan on 2/27.
Stat leaders for Simla are Carlee Cox with 241 points, 81 assists, 111 rebounds and 108 steals, Kinlee Cox with 212 points and 59 assists, Katie Gotschall with 196 points, Brynlee Amendt with 75 assists, 94 rebounds, and 110 steals, and Trenna Kocerha with 103 rebounds and 61 steals.
Sanford
The Mustangs are 19-1 overall on the season with a 6-0 league record and are 1st in the Southern Peaks league. Sanford got the win over Custer County earlier this week 48-21 and will be looking to continue winning the rest of the week during their end of season tournament. Their next opponent will be Center tonight. The championship of their tournament will be Saturday 2/28 where the team will be looking to win and hold their top three spot in the seeding index.
Stat leaders for the Mustangs are Brinlyn Smith with 172 points, 30 assists, and 49 steals, Claire Crowther with 152 points, 31 assists, 49 rebounds and 44 steals, Avery Koenig with 142 points and 89 rebounds, Hayden Peterson with 27 assists, Bella Peterson with 51 rebounds, and Makynlee Faucette with 44 steals.
Sargent
The Farmers are currently 18-2 overall on the season, 5-1 in league play and are 2nd in the Southern Peaks League. Sargent is currently in a local league tournament and was able to get a win in the first round over Trinidad 49-19. The team will be looking to win their second game of the tournament and will face Del Norte tonight to advance into the championship. A win for the farmers will help ensure they remain in the top 4 teams heading into the playoffs next week.
Leading the Farmers on the stat board are Kandace Pargin with 303 points, 40 assists, 101 rebounds, and 64 steals, Angelise Garcia with 275 points, 42 assists, and 92 steals, Kimberly Pargin with 152 points and 24 assists, Denver Holman with 60 rebounds and 30 steals, and Aubrey Naranjo with 48 rebounds.
Sedgwick County
Sedgwick County currently sits at number 5 in the CHSAA Seeding Index with a 14-6 overall record, a 4-1 league record and are 2nd in the Lower Platte League. The Cougars ended their regular season with two wins over Haxtun 66-23 and 65-22. The team now waits for the teams around them to finish their regular season to see if they will remain in the top five teams of 2A.
Stat leaders for the Cougars are Lainee Nein with 350 points, 60 assists, 148 rebounds, and 54 steals, Ryen Carlson with 200 points, 35 assists, and 39 steals, Daryn Nein with 100 points, 106 rebounds, Sophia Rahe with 27 assists, and Piper Buettenback with 77 rebounds and 27 steals.
Plateau Valley
The Cowboys currently have a 17-4 overall record, a 7-1 league record, are 2nd in the Westen Slope League and are 6th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. Plateau Valley was able to end last week with a win over Nucla 41-31 and started this last week of the regular season off with a loss to Cedaredge 36-44. The team will be looking to bounce back and get a win to end the regular season as they take on North Park on 2/28.
Stat leaders for the Cowboys are Macy Bevan with 269 points and 140 rebounds, Presley Hawkins with 216 points and 94 rebounds, Lili Taylor with 123 points, 62 assists, 101 rebounds, and 71 steals, Lexi Taylor with 60 assists and 52 steals, and Bailee Taylor with 39 assists and 75 steals.
Akron
Akron currently sits at 7 in the CHSAA Seeding index and would be a host of regionals. The team is 12-9 overall on the season with a 2-3 league record and are 4th in the Lower Platte League. The Rams ended their regular season with an overtime win over Byers 43-40. They will be waiting to see how other games end the remainder of the week and will hope they stay in the top 8 teams to be able to host a region going into the playoffs.
Leading Akron’s stat board are Molly O’Neil with 286 points, 43 assists, 193 rebounds, and 50 steals, Kashlee Randel with 139 points, 72 assists, 94 rebounds, and 70 steals, Mikenna Weers with 79 points, Addison Weis with 12 assists, and Taylor Benish with 67 rebounds and 18 steals.
Heritage Christian
Heritage Christian is currently the last team to host a Regional quad at number 8 in the CHSAA Seeding Index. The team is 17-4 overall on the season, 11-0 in league play and are 1st in the Mile High league. The team was able to beat Byers last week 56-41 and started this week off with a win over Lyons 53-39. The team will be looking to get two more wins before the end of the week to help them hold onto their hosting spot. These games will be against DCA on 2/26 and Flatirons Academy on 2/28.
Stat leaders for Heritage Christian are Samantha Snow with 243 points, 56 assists, 106 rebounds, and 69 steals, Cadence Smith with 170 points, 94 assists, 82 rebounds and 60 steals, and Mataya Kraft with 156 points, 33 assists, 172 rebounds and 75 steals.
Campion Academy
Sitting at 27 in the CHSAA Seeding Index, Campion Academy is 13-5 overall on the season after falling to College View Academy 33-34 and winning their last game 70-16. The Cougars will end their regular season this weekend as they take on Mile High Academy on the road on 2/28 and will look to see where they end up in the playoffs.
Stat leaders for Campion Academy are Victoria Matthews with 278 points, 11 assists, 136 rebounds, and 49 steals, Lizbeth Lopez-Morquecho with 139 points, 17 assists, 62 rebounds and 47 steals, Summer Umali with 50 points, 13 assists, and 38 steals, and Addison Gann with 54 rebounds.
Mancos
Mancos is currently 9-9 overall on the season with a 7-4 league record, are 3rd in the San Juan League and are 28th in the CHSAA Seeding Index. After beating Dolores 36-19, the team is now on a 5 game win streak and will be looking to end the regular season with 6 wins in a row as they take on Telluride tonight on the road in the final league game of the season. Then the team will wait for all other games to finish to see their final placement heading into the playoffs.
Stat leaders for the Bluejays are Tinsley Aspromonte with 202 points, 29 assists, 80 rebounds and 42 steals, Caylee Moore with 125 points, 30 assists, 157 rebounds, and 47 steals, Destiny Kramer with 115 points, 89 rebounds, and 42 steals, and Tyla Henry with 20 assists.
Ascent Classical Academy
Ascent Classical Academy is 11-8 overall on the season with a 6-2 league record and are 3rd in the Foothills league. The team is currently at 29 in the seeding index after finishing all of their regular season games, the last two resulting in losses to ACA 22-47 and GVCA 20-55. The Guardians now wait for the end of the week to come to see their final spot in the playoffs and where they will be traveling to for regionals.
Stat leaders for the Guardians are Naomi Sanchez with 248 points, 40 assists, 110 rebounds and 94 steals, Riley Johnson with 172 points, 49 assists, and 85 steals, Josie Trouba with 117 points and 87 steals, Lydia Rogers with 26 assists and 122 rebounds, and Charlotte Trouba with 143 rebounds.
Vail Mountain
Sitting at number 30 in the CHSAA Seeding Index, the Rangers are 11-9 overall on the season with a 6-4 league record and are 4th in the Western Slope League. The team has not played any regular season games since early February, which resulted in a win over West Grand 46-15 and a loss to North Fork 25-57. Vail Mountain now waits for other teams to finish their regular season to ensure they remain inside of the playoff bubble after any movement occurs.
Stat leaders for Vail Mountain through the season are Kiana Garcia with 135 points, 20 assists, and 55 steals, Abby Adochio with 123 points, 12 assists, 95 rebounds, and 49 steals, Izzy Adochio with 97 points, 36 assists, 92 rebounds and 55 steals, and Annie Halloran with 66 rebounds.
Ridgway
The Demons of Ridgway are 11-10 overall on the season with a 6-5 league record, are 4th in the San Juan League and are 31 in the seeding index. The team was able to start this week off with a win over Telluride 44-29 and will be looking to end the week and the regular season with another win as they take on Dove Creek on the road tomorrow and will look to stay inside of the playoff bubble.
Stat leaders for Ridgway are Emery Cornell with 198 points, 23 assists, and 78 steals, Sophia Scranton with 179 points, 68 assists, 144 rebounds and 111 steals, Marina Smith with 112 points and 87 rebounds, and Macey Cornell with 26 assists, 83 rebounds and 61 steals.
Golden View Classical Academy
The Sentinels are currently the last team inside of the playoff bubble at 32 in the CHSAA Seeding Index. Golden View sits at 12-10 overall on the season with a 5-3 league record and are 4th in the Foothills league. Last week the team fell to Loveland Classical 28-61 but was able to beat Ascent Classical Academy 55-20. The regular season will end tonight on the road as the team plays The Pinnacle. The Sentinels will be looking to get the win to help secure their place inside of the playoff bubble.
Stat leaders for the team are Jocelyn Le with 162 points and 113 rebounds, Ainsley Chidester with 144 points and 56 steals, Sedona Knott with 143 points, 26 assists, 110 rebounds, and 50 steals, Gianna Acocella with 54 assists, Audrey Clark with 24 assists and 46 steals, and Mira Lensink with 147 rebounds.
Twin Peaks Classical Academy
The Timberwolves are the first team outside of the playoff bubble at 33 in the seeding index. Twin Peaks Classical is 12-10 overall on the season with a 4-4 league record and are 5th in the Foothills league. The teams regular season ended with 4 consecutive wins over Rocky Mountain Lutheran 48-37, AWCPA 54-26 and 57-25 and Liberty Tree Academy 52-32. The team will now have to wait and see if there is enough movement inside of the playoff cutoff to allow them to fall in.
Top players for the team this season are Kaleigh Van Pelt with 396 points, 40 assists, 149 rebounds, and 175 steals, Cleo Baker 91 with 23 assists, and 69 steals, Elizabeth Zeh with 89 points and 142 rebounds, Imani Francis with 21 assists and 62 steals, and Claire Fifford with 143 rebounds.
Custer County
Custer County currently sits outside of the playoff bubble by two spots at 34. The Bobcats are 9-11 overall on the season with a 3-0 league record, but hold the number one spot in the West Central League. The team was able to get a win over Cotopaxi 28-15 a couple of weeks ago, but fell to number three team Sanford 21-48. The regular season will wrap up for the Bobcats tonight on the road as they face Trinidad and hope for the win to give themselves the best chance at squeaking into the top 32.
Stat leaders for Custer County are Hayden Hampton with 301 points, 34 assists, 113 rebounds, and 106 steals, Marin Foster with 117 points, 18 assists, 146 rebounds, and 48 steals, Stephanie Lewis with 56 points, 29 assists, and 48 steals, and Aiden Lyons with 91 rebounds.
