CLASS 1A GIRLS BASKETBALL REGIONAL REPORT – THURSDAY

Due to the potential of religious restrictions facing some schools, play in the Class 1A girls regional bracket gets started on Thursday in three regions. Those are hosted by Eads, Prairie, and Caliche.

REGION EIGHT AT CALICHE HS

#8 CALICHE (16-7) VS #25 PEETZ (12-11)  7PM

Caliche and Peetz met on 1/27 in Peetz, and the Lady Buffs rolled to a 62-20 road victory. Ryann Svoboda led Caliche with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Hallie Lewis added 12 points and six steals. The Lady Buffs also got 10 points from Ellie Willis, and nine apiece from Faye Lueck and Alexis Breidenbach. Alexis Gentry paced Peetz with 11 points. Jaidynn Reiman added four for the Lady Bulldogs.

#9 CHERAW (20-3) VS #24 MILE HIGH ACADEMY (12-9)  5PM

Cheraw enters regionals on an eight-game winning streak, after the Lady Wolverines capped the regular season with a 53-16 victory over Walsh. Bristyl Barratt led Cheraw with 19 points in that win, and Adi Miell recorded nine steals. Mile High Academy won five of its last six games, including a 36-32 decision over Campion Academy in the finale. Kylie Helm and Lia Zachawerus both narrowly missed registering double-doubles. Each finished with nine points, and Helm grabbed 11 rebounds, while Zachawerus pulled down 10.

REGION TWO AT EADS HS

#2 EADS (20-2) VS #31 MIAMI-YODER (12-10)  4PM

Eads ended the regular season as one of the hottest teams in the classification, winning its final 12 games. The Lady Eagles got 11 points from Anna Wollert, and 10 from Jordynn Turcotte in a 53-14 win over Walsh last Friday. After a late five-game slide threatened the postseason chances of Miami-Yoder, the Lady Buffs won their final two games to make the bracket. Both were by single digits, including a 37-31 win over Wiley. Mindy Quintana-Vazquez scored a dozen in that victory.

#15 DENVER JEWISH DAY (11-4) VS #18 KIT CARSON (13-10)  5:15PM

Denver Jewish Day locked up the first 5280 league title in program history with wins over Rocky Mountain Lutheran and Mile High Academy last week. The Lady Tigers got 18 points from Tamar Goldberg-Butler, and 14 from Adira Bielsky in the 48-30 win over Mile High Academy. Bayla Milobsky chipped in 12 points. Kit Carson finished the regular season with four straight wins, and the Lady Wildcats held two of the opponents to single digits. That includes a 61-7 win over Hanover in the finale. Shay Rady went for 17 points in that victory, and Elizabeth Kent added 14. Braylin Jackson and Allyssa Gekeler scored eight points apiece.

REGION SEVEN AT PRAIRIE HS

#7 PRAIRIE (17-6) VS #26 CHEYENNE WELLS (7-16)  3PM

After winning the title in the North Central League, the Lady Mustangs followed that by finishing fourth in last week’s NCL/YWKC crossover. Prairie beat Lone Star in the opening round (60-42), but fell to Caliche (60-31) and Idalia (37-32) in its final two games. Cheyenne Wells went through a four-game skid just prior to the final week of the regular season, but the Lady Tigers righted themselves with wins over Holly (43-32) and Elbert (48-30). Aliyah Muth led the way in the second of those wins with 13 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. Aubry Carroll added 10 points, and Bailey Scheler had 10 rebounds.

#10 SPRINGFIELD (18-5) VS #23 COTOPAXI (13-9)  6PM

Springfield had its four-game winning streak snapped by Stratton in the finale, 62-53, but the Lady Longhorns won 10 of their final 12 regular season contests overall. Cobi Mackey went for 23 points and eight rebounds against Stratton, and Jersey Speck tallied 11 points. Tyler Mackey and BriLynn Jackson added eight points apiece. Cotopaxi dropped its final two games, and four of the last six, as the Lady Pirates fell to Rangely (60-36) and Flagler (45-6) at last week’s ECA tournament. Cotopaxi trailed Flagler 23-3 after one quarter.
