Class 2A Girls Basketball Postseason Preview

Postseason is here and the competition will be getting more intense. With teams assigned to their region for the first round of the playoffs, we get brief glimpse at all 32 teams that made the postseason and see where they are going, who they play, and the other competitors in their region.

1. Merino Vs 32. Custer County

Merino ended the regular season with the number one seed after finishing 22-1 – their lone loss coming from Simla 47-55 at the end of January. The Rams ended 1st in the Lower Platte league with a 5-0. As the number one seed, the team will be host to region one, hosting Custer County, Byers and Center.  They will be starting their playoff journey against the 32 seed Custer County who went 10-12 overall in the season with a 3-0 league record and ended 1st in the West Central League. Custer County has not faced Merino or Byers, but they have played Center where the Bobcats lost 33-47. The winner of Merino vs. Custer County will take on the winner of Byers vs. Center where the last team standing will advance to the State Tournament next week.

16. Byers Vs 17. Center

Kicking of the post season in Merino, Byers will take on Center in the first game on 3/6. Byers ended their regular season at 16 with a 12-11 overall record, a 3-3 league record and finished 4th in the Union Pacific league. Center enters the playoffs at 17 with a 13-9 overall record, a 3-2 league record and in 4th in the Southern Peaks League. Center has not faced Byers of Merino, but as mentioned above, has played Custer County and got the win 47-33. With the game being a 16 vs 17, it is expected to be a great game to start the playoffs. The winner of this game will face the winner of Merino Vs Custer County for a chance to advance to the State Tournament.

8. Akron Vs 25 Soroco

Akron ended the regular season as the 8 seed and as the last team to host the start of the playoffs. The Rams enter the playoffs with a 12-11 overall record, 2 -3 league record and finished 4th in the Lower Platte League. Akron has not faced any of the teams they will be hosting and will face Soroco for their first postseason game. Soroco comes into the postseason as the 25th seed with a 13-10 overall league record, a 7-2 league record, and are 3rd in the Western Slope League. Soroco has not played Akron or James Irwin this season, but they did play Rangely and lost to them 26-59. The winner of this game will play the winner of Rangely and James Irwin to play for a ticket to the State Tournament.

9. Rangely vs. 24. James Irwin

Just missing out on a host spot and having to travel to Akron, Rangely comes into the playoffs at the number 9 seed with a 15-5 overall record, a 9-0 league record and in 1st in the Western Slope League. The Panthers will kick off their postseason journey by taking on James Irwin who is coming in with a 12-10 overall record, a 7-6 league record, in 1st in the Tri-Peaks league and as the 24 seed. As mentioned above, the only teams in this region that have previously played this season were Rangely and Soroco, where Rangely got the win 59-26. The winner of this first game will move on to face the winner of Akron Vs. Soroco to try and make it to the final week of the season at the State Tournament.

4. Sargent Vs 29. Vail Mountain

With a 19-3 overall record, Sargent finishes their regular season as the 4th seed and as a regional host. The Farmers ended 2nd in the Southern Peaks League with a 5-1 league record. The Farmers first game of the post season will be against the 29 Vail Mountain Rangers. Vail Mountain comes into the postseason with an 11-9 overall record with a 504 league record, and 4th in the Western Slope league. Sargent and Vail Mountain has not played one another yet this season, or the other two teams who will be sharing the regional. The winner of this game will play the winner of Loveland Classical and Hoehne for a chance to win the region and advance to the State Tournament.

13. Loveland Classical Vs 20. Hoehne

The Lions of Loveland Classical will be going to Sargent for regionals. The team ended their regular season with a 17-5 overall record, an 8-0 league record and in 1st in the Foothills league. The team will be facing the 20 seed who is the Hoehne Farmers, Hoehne ended their regular season 14-9 overall with a 7-0 league record and in 1st in the Santa Fe league. The winner of this game will keep their State dreams alive for at least one more game as they will take on the winner of Sargent Vs Vail Mountain for a chance to advance to the State Tournament.

5. Sedgwick County Vs. 28. Ascent Classical Academy

Sedgwick County enters the postseason as the 5th seed with a 15-7 overall record, a 4-1 league record and ended 2nd in the Lower Platte League. The Cougars will be taking on Ascent Classical Academy in the first round. The Guardians are 11-8 overall on the season with a 6-2 league record and ended 3rd in the Foothills league. These teams have not faced each other or any other team in the region, but the winner of this game will advance to play the winner of Calhan and Gilpin County to try and win the region and advance to State.

12. Calhan Vs 21. Gilpin County

Calhan ends their regular season as the 12 seed and goes into the postseason traveling to Sedgwick County with a 17-6 overall record, a 4-1 league record and 2nd in the Black Forest League. They Bulldogs will be taking on Gilpin County in the first round of regionals who ended their season 17-6 overall with a 7-4 league record and in 6th in the Mile High league. The teams have not played one another yet this season. The winner of this game will advance to take on the winner of Sedgwick County and Ascent Classical Academy for a chance to punch their ticket to the State Tournament.

2. Simla Vs 31. Golden View Classical Academy

Simla arrives to the postseason with a perfect 23-0 record, 4-0 league record, 1st in the Black Forrest league, and as the number 2 seed. The Cubs are the host to their region and will take on Golden View Classical Academy in the first round. GVCA is the 31 seed and comes in with a 13-10 overall record, a 5-3 league record and are 4th in the Foothills league. These teams have not faced one another yet this season and the winner will advance to play the winner of DCA and Las Animas move on to the State Tournament.

15. Dayspring Christian Academy Vs 18. Las Animas

Coming into the postseason as the 15th seed, DCA travels to Simla to play the 18 seed Las Animas. DCA is 13-10 after the regular season with a 10-2 league record and they finished 2nd in the Mile High League. Las Animas comes into the postseason tournament with a 15-8 overall record, a 5-2 league record and in 3rd in the Satna Fe League. These teams have not played each other this season, but the winner of this game will be looking to take down what will likely be the undefeated Simla to get into the State Tournament.

7. Heritage Christian Vs 26 Campion Academy

Heritage Christian ends their regular season with a 19-4 overall record, a 12-0 league record, in 1st in the Mile High league and as the 7th overall seed. Their first opponent of the postseason will be Campion Academy. The Cougars come into the postseason not in a league and with a 13-6 overall record. These teams have not played this season, and the winner of this game will look to take on the winner of Holyoke and Caprock Academy to advance to the State Tournament next week.

10. Holyoke vs 23. Caprock Academy

Holyoke wraps up their regular season with a 13-10 overall record, a 2-3 league record, 3rd in the Lower Platte league, and will be traveling to Heritage Christian as the 10 seed. The Dragons first opponent of the playoffs will be against the 23 seed, Caprock Academy. Caprock Academy is 14-7 overall, 5-4 in league play, and 5th in the Western Slope League. These teams will be fresh opponents and the winner will be looking to play the winner of Heritage Chrisitan and Campion Academy and will be looking to get their ticket to the State Tournament.

3. Sanford Vs. 30. Ridgway

The Mustangs are the hosts to their region as the 3rd seed with a 21-1 overall record, a 6-0 league record and in 1st in the Southern Peaks League. Sanford has played both Swink and Trinidad this season, which were wins 34-20 and 44-14 respectively but the team has yet to play Ridgway this season. Ridgway ended their regular season 11-11 overall on the season, 6-6 in league play, 4th in the San Juan league and as the 30 seed in the postseason tournament. The Demons have not played any other team in this region this season. The winner of this game will face the winner of Swink and Trinidad to try and win the region and punch their ticket to the State Tournament.

14. Swink Vs. 19 Trinidad

Swink comes into the postseason as the 14 seed and travels to Sanford to play Trinidad for Regionals. Swink ended their regular season with a 15-8 overall record, a 6-1 league record and in 2nd in the Santa Fe League. Swink has not played Trinidad yet this season but they did fall to Sanford earlier this season 20-34. Trinidad wrapped up their regular season with a 14-7 overall record,  2-4 league record and in 5th in the Southern Peaks League. Trinidad also lost to Sanford earlier in the season 14-44. The winner of this game will advance to play the winner of Sanford and Ridgeway for a chance to win the region and advance to the State tournament.

6. Plateau Valley Vs 27. Mancos

The Cowboys are the 6 seed in the postseason and the host of their region. Plateau Valley is 18-4 overall with an 8-1 league record and are 2nd in the Western Slope League. Plateau Valley played Mancos earlier this season and beat them 45-10. The Bluejays enter the playoffs as the 27 seed with a 10-9 overall record, an 8-4 league record and 3rd in the San Juan league. Mancos has not played Del Norte but has played Dove Creek twice and lost the first one 31-35 but beat them the second time 33-30. The winner of this game will play the winner of Del Norte and Dove Creek and will have a chance to win the region and head to the State Tournament.

11. Del Norte Vs 22. Dove Creek

As the 11 seed, Del Norte will travel to Plateau Valley to take on the number 22 seed in Dove Creek. Del Norte ended their regular season with a 13-8 overall record, a 3-2 league record and in 3rd in the Southern Peaks League. The Tigers have yet to take on any of the other teams in their region this season. Dove Creek ends their regular season with a 14-8 overall record, an 8-4 league record and in 2nd in the San Juan League. The Bulldogs have not played Plateau Valley yet, but as mentioned above, they have played Mancos twice, winning the first 35-31 and losing the second 30-33. The winner of this game will move on to play the winter of Plateau Valley and Mancos for a chance to win the region and head to the State Tournament.
