SIX-MAN FOOTBALL REPORT – WEEK TWO

A week after having a top-five match-up, and two more in the top-10, we get two big clashes in Week Two. One is a pair of teams in the top-nine, and the other gives us a #1 vs #2 game to feast upon. And that latter one leads off the week. We focus on the games featuring teams ranked in the top-10 of the MHPR Coaches/Media Poll this week.

THURSDAY

#1 IDALIA (2-0) VS #2 PEETZ (1-0)

Idalia just keeps rolling along, as the Wolves took care of #12 Walsh 66-6 on the road last week. Idalia is averaging 63 points per game so far, while allowing just six per contest. Bode Monahan had a special day in that win at Walsh, returning two kick-offs for touchdowns, and also racking up four sacks. Gabe Kechter had six carries for 90 yards and four touchdowns. Peetz had the week off after opening with a 52-0 shutout of Weldon Valley in Zero Week. Eight different Bulldogs carried the ball in that win, and they went for 364 yards and seven TD. Dylan Wagner had a team-high 71 yards and two touchdowns. Wagner and Parker Reker led the defense with 11 tackles apiece. Idalia has won the last two meetings to take a 4-3 lead during the MaxPreps era. Kechter ran for 152 yards and three touchdowns, and Broderick Kite tossed a pair of TD passes in Idalia’s 52-0 win in last year’s semifinal contest. Wagner recorded 11 tackles, and Tanner Wood added nine for the Bulldogs.

FRIDAY

#4 GRANADA (1-0) AT INGALLS, KS (0-0)

Granada enjoyed an early bye week after its 30-22 victory over #9 Caliche back in Zero Week. Sebastian Pizarro ran for 92 yards and two touchdowns, and Alejandro Perez added 94 passing and 56 rushing. Fernando Cadena went for 49 yards and a TD on the ground. Cadena also led the defense with 17 tackles. It’s the first week of competition in Kansas, making this the season-opener for Ingalls, who has won at least six games in each of its first four seasons in six-man. That includes a 9-2 mark last year, with a trip to the postseason. This will be the first meeting between the two squads in the MaxPreps era.

#6 OTIS (1-0) VS KIOWA (0-1)

Cambric Klinzmann had 162 yards and three touchdowns, and Malakye Reese returned an interception 79 yards for a TD, to lead Otis past Caliche 25-21 last week. Klinzmann also recorded 27 tackles, while Raegan Torres and Austin Sauer added 21 and 20, respectively. Kiowa had a rough go last week, falling 54-6 on the road at #10 Hanover. The Indians gave up five rushing touchdowns, two passing, and one on a pick-six. These two have not met in the MaxPreps era.

#7 WILEY (1-0) AT LA VETA (1-0)

Wiley jumped out to a 30-6 halftime lead over Genoa-Hugo/Karval last week, and rolled to a 64-6 win over the Pirates. Grant Mauch had a big night, throwing for 210 yards and three scores, and running for 84 yards and two more touchdowns. Trate Weimer had three carries for 96 yards and two TD, and Ivan Chavez caught six passes for 117 yards and two scores. Mauch added an interception on defense. La Veta traveled to Deer Trail last Friday and claimed a 54-20 victory. A lot of the damage was done in the fourth quarter, where the Redhawks scored 28 of their points. Marcelo Lofgren did the heavy lifting on offense, racking up 211 yards and four touchdowns on 11 carries. He also tied for the team lead in tackles (13) with Darren James. Weston Huff added an interception, blocked kick, and punt return for a TD. Wiley and La Veta are meeting for the first time in the MaxPreps era.

#8 PRAIRIE (1-0) VS #11 FLAGLER (1-1)

Prairie had a field day in its opener against North Park last week, taking a 63-6 win over the Wildcats. Derek Dollerschell scored three touchdowns on four carries and racked up 113 yards. Owen Kilmer and Riar Holloway each tossed a touchdown, with Dominick Lebsock and Case Kugler each catching one. Holloway and Dollerschell each picked off a pass, with Dollerschell taking it back for a score, and Tatum Bailey scoring on a fumble recovery. Flagler evened its record with a 57-8 win over #16 Eads last week. Gabe Harvie threw for 97 yards and three touchdowns, while Trevor Moore added 162 yards and two TD on the ground. Harvie also housed a 78-yard kick return. This will be the first meeting between Prairie and Flagler in the MaxPreps era.

#10 HANOVER (1-0) AT WELDON VALLEY (0-1)

Not much went wrong for Hanover in last week’s 54-6 win over Kiowa. Joseph Molina ran for 162 yards and three touchdowns, Jonathan Quiroz-Reyes threw for 90 yards and two scores, and Hector Lopez ran for one score and caught another. Defensively, Angel Diaz had a pick-six. Weldon Valley had the week off following its 52-0 loss to Peetz in Zero Week. On a day without much going their way, the Warriors got 41 rushing and 19 passing yards our of Zander Braun. Noah Johnson added 40 rushing and 22 receiving. Seth O’Patik led the defense with five tackles and an interception. Hanover won the only two previous meetings. Those were in 2022 and 2023.

SATURDAY

#3 FLEMING (2-0) AT #9 CALICHE (0-2)

Fleming went on the road last week for a top-five showdown with #5 Cheyenne Wells. The Wildcats sprung the mild upset of the then second-ranked Tigers, 40-34. Fleming was fifth entering the contest. Dylon Monroe powered the offense with 151 yards and four touchdowns, and he caught a TD pass from Treyson Kirkwood. The defense got a pair of interceptions, one from D. Monroe, and the other fro Jaron Monroe, who added a kick return for a score. Caliche suffered its second consecutive heartbreaker in the 25-21 defeat by Otis. The Buffs have lost their two games by a total of 13 points. Mason Hernandez ran for 80 yards and had a 40-yard catch in last week’s loss. Avery Bell added 53 on the ground to go with 117 passing. Bell recorded eight tackles to tie Brett Breidenbach for the team lead. This is the second meeting between the two North division rivals, with Caliche winning the first two. The Buffs got a 45-30 decision two years ago, and a 30-26 win last year.
