Class 1A Football Semifinal Breakdown and Predictions
#1 Limon vs #4 C.S Christian
Class 1A features three teams that at the beginning of the year I thought had a chance to be here and 1 that had a lot of young players step up this year. Limon is one of the three teams I figured had a shot to get to the semifinals. Limon got into the semifinals with a 42-8 win over Meeker. Limon defensively posted a shutout until the fourth quarter. Limon defense limited a very good offensive team and have to feel good about their defense. Limon had 1 turnover in the game and were led in tackles by Dominik Bratrsovski who had 7 tackles. Limon defensively gave up 192 yards passing and 71 yards rushing but did a good job limiting what Meeker passing attack could do. Limon offensively was balanced in the game. QB Cannan Bennett threw for 147 yards on 5 completions and 2 TD’s. Limon rushing attack mustered 202 yards and were led by Kory Tacha who had 124 yards and 2 TD’s. Offensively Limon had big 2nd and 3rd quarters to put this game away. This was a good showing by Limon offense after only scoring 33 points last week.
C.S Christian is the one team that surprised quite a few teams. C.S Christian had a ton of young players mainly sophomores step up. This team has only 4 seniors as well. C.S Christian punched their ticket into the Semifinals holding off a revenge minded Florence team. C.S Christian had a few defensive plays that made a big difference. C.S Christian had 1 interception which came when Florence was driving and also a couple TFL by Rian Chavez and Lukas Baltzer. C.S Christian defense did a much better job of stopping the run this week giving up just 160 yards and they did a good job stopping the pass holding Florence to just 64 yards. Offensively QB Caleb Stockton stepped up the most. He passed for 196 yards and the only touchdown scored for C.S Christian. C.S Christian will hope to get their rushing game going this week as they were held to just 99 yards and Florence did a good job of slowing Peyton Brones. C.S Christian also had a massive performance from Kicker Greg Olsen who had two field goals.
This game features a team that is senior heavy against a younger team who is looking to take a step to become the main team. Limon is senior laden and led by some key leaders like Cannan Bennett, Hauk Hubbard, and Jaron Carpenter. Limon will need everyone to be on point against a very dangerous C.S Christian offense. Limon offensively must take care of the ball and know how it feels to fall in the semifinals as it happened last year. C.S Christian has only 4 seniors but had a lot of Junior and Sophomore step up. C.S Christian must get more production in the rushing department and if they have another big day from their QB they could have some big success. Defensively C.S Christian faces a team that can hit you with three different players and a QB who rarely makes mistakes. C.S Christian will have to play their best defensive game to pull the upset. I am going with Limon in this game. I think their senior leadership, balanced offense, and Head Coach will make the difference in this game. It will be a very good game!
#3 Strasburg vs #7 Centauri
Ding Ding Ding! We have a rematch of one of the best games of the year in all classes from last year. Centauri and Strasburg meet in the 1A state championship a year ago and it was a defensive slugfest that went into Double OT. Both teams have key players returning from that game and both teams are just as hungry to win again this year. Strasburg punched their ticket into the semifinal by blowing past Burlington 42-0. Strasburg made a change at QB but only had 16 yards passing. Strasburg was able to get things going on the ground rushing for 431 and 4 TD’s. Trystan Graf and Michael Burns both broke the 100 yards mark. Strasburg offensively came ready to play and have developed an offensive attack that is tough to stop. Strasburg defensively really came to play limiting Burlington to just 59 yards rushing and 86 yards passing. Strasburg also forced 1 fumble and 1 interception, along with 2 sacks. Strasburg was led in tackles by Owen Strain and Michael Spence both with 4 tackles. Michael Spence and Michael Burns both played big roles last year and will be needed once again to step up.
Centauri last week pulled the first big upset of the tournament beating #2 Peyton 10-7. Centauri allowed an early score in the first quarter, but their defense adjusted, and their offense got 10 points on the board. Centauri has to like the way their defense has played giving up 0 points in the opening round and just 7 to a good Peyton offense. Centauri had their ball hawking defense up to the task forcing 3 INT’s and 1 fumble. The biggest defensive play has to be the Interception by LB Adam Chacon who picked off the ball during Peyton final drive of the game. Centauri was also led by Adam Chacon and Bennie Chacon in tackles. Offensively Centauri has a few things to work on. Their passing attack struggled to get going passing for just 15 yards on 1 attempt. In the opening round they threw for well over 200 yards. Centauri though has to like the way their rushing attack stayed strong rushing for 197 yards as a team. Taj Cornum had a big day rushing for 161 yards and 1 TD. Centauri must take care of the football this week on offense and must have big days from Taj Cornum and Eric Maez.
This should be a great game and I am excited to watch this game. Emotions will be high and I think whatever team can control their emotions the best will have an early leg up in this game. Strasburg will have to contend with a explosive offense that loves the big plays. Strasburg offensively will be tested up front and will have to find a way to open the run with their passing attack. I expect Michael Burns and Michael Spence to really step up for Strasburg offense. Centauri defensively will have to contend with a fast-offensive attack. Centauri must stop the run and see if Strasburg can throw the ball. Offensively Centauri must take care of the ball and need a big game from Eriz Maez and Taj Cornum. I am excepting another close fought game and like last week I am going with Centauri in another upset and a return to the state championship.
