Class 1A Top Ten Boys Basketball Breakdown

will post Top Ten Breakdowns until we jump full sail into league play then we will move into league predictions and playoff scenarios.

#1 Cornerstone Christian (8-0)

Cornerstone Christian is the new #1 this week and they had a dominate December and November.  Cornerstone Christian has not played a game yet in 2019 but when they do they open with a very tough game.  The Bulldogs open 2019 against a solid Longmont Christian team who just upset Heritage Christian.  Cornerstone Christian will be the favorite to win their District and also is a team to watch in terms of a Elite 8 berth.

#2 De Beque (8-0)

Another team who had a dominate November and December is De Beque.  De Beque has started this season on fire with quality wins over Briggsdale, Hotchkiss, and Plateau Valley.  1 scary thing about De Beque is they are young and will continue to get better.  De Beque has not played a game in 2019.  De Beque also competes in a 2A league and they will be ready for the District tournament due to games against top opponents.  De Beque first game in 2019 is against a solid Soroco team.  Another huge game is 1/18 against Meeker so things get tough right away for De Beque.

#3 Sangre De Cristo (5-1)

Sangre De Cristo opened the season at 5-0.  They have started their 2019 schedule and fell to a good Rocky Ford team 53-47.  Sangre De Cristo has now played 3 straight games decided by 6 points or less.  Sangre De Cristo is now at full strength with the return of Jared Sinclair.  Sangre De Cristo jump into District play on 1/10 when they make the trip up to Creede to face the Miners.  This is a huge game for Sangre De Cristo and by 1/20 we will know how good of shape Sangre De Cristo is in with 3 massive games against Creede, Primero, and Cotopaxi.

#4 Springfield (5-2)

Springfield enters 2019 without a loss to a 1A team on their resume.  Springfield also has two losses to a Top 3 2A Holly team.  Springfield has opened the 2019 part of their schedule.  Springfield beat Cheyenne Wells easily 54-25.  Beau Dukes had a solid game scoring 21 points leading all scorers in the game.  Springfield jumps into District play this weekend with games against Kim/Branson and Granada both very important games in terms of District seeding.  Springfield is still my pick to win District 3 but Kit Carson is finally at full strength and Walsh will push for a District title.

#5 Haxtun (7-2)

Haxtun is off to an impressive 7-2 start and is already 3-0 in 2019.  Haxtun picked up a very impressive win over 2A Sedgwick County last week 59-56 and is this senior group first win over Sedgwick County.  Haxtun also before break picked up 3 impressive wins over Peetz, Holyoke, and Caliche.  Haxtun has emerged as the favorite in District 5.  Haxtun will also be battle tested playing a 2A league schedule.  Haxtun this weekend has a rivalry game/rematch against Holyoke.  Haxtun should be poised for a good run in 1A but staying focused and improving will be key.

#6 Peetz (6-2)

Peetz is your reigning 1A state champion and is off to a solid 6-2 start.  Peetz two losses are to Haxtun and a very good Bridgeport NE team.  Peetz has already started their 2019 schedule and started it with a bang beating Briggsdale 55-37 and then a last second shot to beat Merino 72-70.  Peetz will also continue to improve with a lot of players getting extended minutes.  Peetz has just one game this week against Fleming and is another shot for Peetz to pick up a big District win.

#7 Cheraw (8-1)

Cheraw continues their host start this season by picked up a big 62-19 win over La Veta.  Cheraw lone loss is to #3 Sangre De Cristo.  Cheraw jumps into District play this week with two big games against McClave and Walsh.  Both games are against quality opponents and two wins give them a huge leg up in the District seeding race.

#8 Briggsdale (8-2)

Briggsdale started the season undefeated starting 8-0.  Briggsdale started their 2019 schedule with a tough loss to Peetz and puts them a bit behind the ball in terms of District seeding.  Briggsdale will have to quickly bounce back and should when they travel to Weldon Valley.  Briggsdale next will really get tested with huge games against Prairie and Caliche.  Briggsdale schedule to end the season will be extremely tough and must be ready for the tough sledding.

#9 Walsh (4-3)

Walsh is a tough team to figure out with 2 of their 3 losses coming against Kansas teams and the other coming against 2A Holly.  Walsh has 2 quality wins over McClave and Kit Carson but still we are just not sure about how good Walsh is.  Those questions will be answer with their second game in 2019 when they travel to play Cheraw.  Walsh will have a chance to really kick start 2019 if they can upset Cheraw.

#10 Kit Carson (5-3)

Kit Carson rejoins the Top 10 after a tough start to the season.  Kit Carson rejoined the rankings upsetting #5 Arickaree/Woodlin 51-46.  The win gets Kit Carson at 2-0 in 2019 and some needed momentum.  Kit Carson in 2018 picked up 2 quality losses to Limon, Springfield, and Walsh but were also playing without a key player in Jayden McCombs-Farmer.  Now that Kit Carson is at full strength we will have to watch and see how good they are.  Kit Carson plays Granada and Flagler/Hi Plains this weekend.
