Girls Basketball League Predictions Class 1A
In Class 1A things are much different than 3A & 2A. In Class 1A you must finish in the Top 3 or 2 of District to advance to regionals (District 1 & 7 only qualify two to regionals). I will pick essentially which teams are making it to regionals. Regionals works as follows Region 1 is District 1 & 7, Region 2 is District 4, 5, & 8, Region 3 is District 2, 3, 6. Changes are based so far on how teams have performed, SOS, and quality wins. At the bottom is the link to my last League Predictions. We are much deeper in the league season now and figured it was a good time to rerun through each district.
District 1 (Only qualifies 2 teams)
#1 North Park
#2 De Beque
District 1 gets just two teams into regionals. It seems 4 contenders have risen to challenge for the two spots available. My current pick for first is North Park. North Park beat De Beque head to head and that win helps North Park secure a top seed for the District tournament. North Park also has played a tough schedule. De Beque is the team I have slotted in at second. De Beque did lose to North Park head to head but have a quality win over Soroco. De Beque and North Park will not play the other two contenders due to league schedules. The other two contenders are Dove Creek and Ouray. It will be interesting once they clash at District to see who comes out on top.
#1 Kit Carson
Kit Carson has nearly wrapped up the #1 seed for the district title but McClave stands in their way. Kit Carson and McClave clash on 2/15 and will be for the #1 seed in the District title. Eads and Cheyenne Wells will need some help to move into the #2 spot but their game on 2/15 will decide the #3 and #4 seed for the District Tournament. My Regional picks are #1 Kit Carson, #2 McClave, #3 Eads. I do think Cheyenne Wells and Cheraw can cause some problems for the Top 3 teams.
#1 South Baca
4 spots and only 3 teams can qualify for the Regional tournament. South Baca can not lock up the #1 seed until they face Springfield on 2/14 and that will decide the #1 seed for the District tournament. Springfield is still not slotted as the #1 or #2 team, yet they still must play Wiley and a loss to Wiley could drop them into the #3 seed for Districts. Wiley has one league game remaining and if they beat Springfield can lock up the #2 seed. My pick for Regionals are #1 South Baca, #2 Wiley, #3 Springfield. Kim/Branson is the fourth contender and all they would need is one upset to jump into the top 3.
District 4 is very tough to gauge. 6 teams are fighting for 3 spots and the battles at Districts will be good games. I am not sure how they seed the District tournament due to 3 leagues colliding in this District. If I remember correctly it may be RPI. I do think that my picks for Regionals shouldn’t be affected by the seeding of the District bracket. My Regional picks are #1 Briggsdale, #2 Fleming, #3 Merino. Longmont Christian, Prairie, and Weldon Valley are all in the hunt, but I feel currently that these are the top 3 teams.
District 5 has been a crazy roller coaster with some very good matchups. Haxtun should be the #1 seed heading into Districts. Arickaree/Woodlin faces Idalia on 2/12 and could decide the #2 seed for the district tournament. Idalia also must face Otis on 2/8 and could potentially drop them down the #4 seed. Seeding will be very important for this District and the right matchup could get teams into a shot for a top 3 finish. My picks for Regionals are #1 Haxtun, #2 Arickaree/Woodlin, #3 Otis. Idalia, Lone Star, and Stratton/Liberty are still in the hunt, but I think Otis has moved into the #3 spot right now.
#1 Sangre De Cristo
#3 La Veta
District 6 is starting to get figured out. Sangre De Cristo is alone in first place and their game against Sierra Grande will decide if they keep the #1 seed for the district tournament. Sangre De Cristo plays Sierra Grande on 2/9. Sangre De Cristo also plays a big non-league game against Springfield on 2/7 and I am not sure if Sangre De Cristo is full strength yet. Cotopaxi has not locked up the #2 seed yet but if they win out they do have the head to head over Sierra Grande. Cotopaxi still has a big-league game against Antonito and that will decide where Cotopaxi finishes. Sierra Grande is tied in 2nd place but as mentioned they lost to Cotopaxi. Sierra Grande can still slide down to the #4 seed as they play Sangre De Cristo and La Veta if Sierra Grande losses both they could slide into the #4 seed. La Veta can still finish with the #3 seed but win their final two league games. My picks for Regionals are #1 Sangre De Cristo, #2 Cotopaxi, #3 La Veta. Sierra Grande could move back into the #3 spot but will need to beat La Veta.
District 7 (Only 2 teams make it to Regionals)
District 7 only gets two teams into regionals and they square off against District 1 for the right to go to state. Currently in District 7 1 teams has separated themselves from the pack and that is Genoa-Hugo. Genoa-Hugo is 12-1 with their lone loss coming to #2 2A Limon. Genoa-Hugo has quality wins in 2019 over Peyton, Arickaree/Woodlin, Byers, and Stratton/Liberty. Genoa-Hugo still has some quality games remaining, but I think they are a lock for a Top 2 finish. The #2 spot was a bit for difficult to figure out. I am sticking with Elbert at #2. Elbert beat Pikes Peak Christian 38-16 to give themselves a huge leg up in the District tournament. Elbert still must contend with Cripple Creek for the #2 seed. I do think Elbert will qualify for regional which is why I am picking them at #2.
#1 Shining Mountain
#2 Belleview Christian
#3 Cornerstone Christian
District 8 this year gets 3 teams into regionals instead of 2. Things though for this district have me unsure of quite a lot. 6 teams currently are in a battle for three spots. Shining Mountain took a big step towards a #1 district seed beating Belleview Christian head to head. Due to that win I am moving Shining Mountain into my #1 spot and Belleview Christian into my #2 spot. Belleview Christian won’t find out their fate in district seeding till early February. My pick for third is Cornerstone Christian. Cornerstone Christian picked up big wins over Mile High Academy and Front Range Baptist to move into the #3 spot. Those are my three picks for regionals as well #1 Shining Mountain, #2 Belleview Christian, and #3 Cornerstone Christian. Front Range Baptist, Mile High Academy, and Beth Eden will all push the top 3.
