MileHigh Prep Report Preseason Football Class 2A Rankings
We are getting closer and closer to the start of the football season. Here are my top 16 preseason rankings and I am expecting a very good season this year. With teams playing in the Fall and Springs I expect a few surprises and will make for a fun Fall season. This is just my take on Class 2A and I am excited to see what the Coaches Poll looks like come August. I move to Class 1A next week.
Class 2A
Rank | Team | Notes |
#1 | Eaton Defending State Champions, Fall Season Class 2A | Eaton is your defending State Champions from the Fall season. Eaton defensively is always tough and return plenty on defense to make them tough again. Most of the offensive line returns for Eaton as well and should help a new QB take over. Eaton does return RB Ethan Florez and should power the offense early in the season. |
#2 | Rifle HS Defending State Champions, Spring Season Class 3A | Rifle was your Class 3A State Champion in the Spring season. Rifle had a young team last year starting a lot of juniors and that experience will be key moving into this season. Rifle returns their starters at both QB and RB. Rifle also returns 9 of their top 13 tacklers and plenty of experience on their offensive line to make this team a real threat for the Class 2A title. |
#3 | Sterling HS Made the playoffs, lost in the First Round. | Sterling had two different starting QB’s a year ago and should help them this season with a one of the two returning. Defensively Sterling will return 8 of their top 13 tacklers and should make this unit dangerous this season. The offensive line will be the biggest question mark for Sterling early in the season. |
#4 | Delta HS Made the playoffs, lost in Semifinals | Delta a year ago had a key injury that allowed the backup QB Nathan Scharnhorst to take over and help lead Delta into the Semifinals. This year Scharnhorst will more than likely take the starting reins and look to lead Delta on another big run. Delta will be looking to replace a ton on the defense but have key leaders back to help rebuild the defense. The offensive line has some key experience back and I think Delta once again is a threat this year. |
#5 | Classical Academy Made the playoffs, Runner-up Spring Season Class 3A | Classical Academy was the runner up in Class 3A Spring season a year ago and have tons of talent returning for this fall. Classical Academy will return RB Cade Palmer but will be searching for a new QB. Classical Academy will also return 8 of their top 13 tacklers. The biggest concern for TCA may be their offensive line with 3 possibly 4 starters graduating. |
#6 | Resurrection Christian Made the playoffs, lost in Semifinals. | Rez Christian will have a new head coach this year but has plenty of weapons returning to make a big run. Resurrection Christian will be looking for a new QB but will have a solid WR to throw to in Eddie Lemos. The offensive line for Rez Chr. is also solid with plenty of experience back. Defensively Resurrection Christian has had top 5 units the past few years and I expect the same this season. |
#7 | La Junta HS Missed the playoffs, went 2-3 Fall Season | La Junta had a tough year a season ago going 2-3 but played in a tough league. La Junta was young last season and return most of their offensive line. La Junta always has a top defense, but the biggest question mark will be the skill positions and if they get going watch out for La Junta this season. |
#8 | Brush Missed the playoffs, went 1-3 Fall Season | Brush had some success last season but only played 4 games. Brush this season will be returning plenty of talent this season and will look for a deep run. Brush returns their starting QB and RB along with half of their offensive line. The biggest return for Brush will be 11 of their top 13 Tacklers. Brush could be a team to make a big push for the playoffs. |
#9 | Elizabeth HS Missed the playoffs, went 2-4 Fall Season | Elizabeth was young last season and showed with them going 2-4. Elizabeth is now a year older and return nearly their entire defense. Elizabeth also returns their starting QB and RB. The biggest question mark will be the offensive line which may return just 1 starter from a year ago. |
#10 | Alamosa HS Missed the playoffs, went 1-4 Fall Season | Alamosa was also young last season and relied heavily on first year starting QB Kasey Jones. Alamosa now has some experience under their belt plus had big yards from RB Dante Gonzales. Alamosa defensively also returns 9 of their top 13 tacklers and this unit will be dangerous this year. |
#11 | Platte Valley Made the playoffs, lost in the first round | Platte Valley will be hit hard by graduation losing key starters on the skill positions and offensive line. Platte Valley is well coached though and should return a very tough defense. Look for the defense of Platte Valley to carry them until a new QB steps up. |
#12 | Pagosa Springs Made the playoffs, lost in the First Round | Pagosa Springs was hit hard by graduation losing key players at the skill positions and 9 of their top 13 tacklers. Pagosa Springs will bring back a very experienced offensive line with possibly all 5 starters back and this will help a young offense at the skill positions. |
#13 | Severance HS Missed the playoffs, went 3-2 Fall Season | Severance played their first season a year ago and had a winning record going 3-2. Severance started a lot of Junior and Sophomore a year ago and this will make them much tough this season. Severance also has a new head coach in Jeff Van Winkle. Defensively look for them to be a top 10 defense. Severance will be a team to watch to see how they grown heading into year 2. |
#14 | Moffat County HS Made the playoffs, lost in the first round | Moffat County reached the playoffs a year ago but fell in the first round. Moffat County will look for a big push this season with QB Ryan Peck back. Moffat County will also return 8 of their top 13 tacklers along with most of their offensive line. The Western Slope League will have be a battle this season! |
#15 | Englewood HS Missed the playoffs, went 3-3 Fall Season | Englewood missed the playoffs a year ago but had success going 3-3. Englewood returns plenty on the offensive side of the ball with QB Gunner Johnson back along with their top RB. The offensive line for Englewood is also in good shape with possibly 3 starters back. The defense for Englewood is the biggest question returning just 5 of their top 13 tacklers from a year ago. |
#16 | Manitou Springs Defending State Champions, Class 2A Springs Season | Manitou Springs won the Class 2A Championship during the Springs season and will look to duplicate the success they had this season. Manitou Springs returns their starting QB Caleb Allen who threw for over 1,000 yards a year ago. The Offensive line is a bit of a concern possibly graduating 3 or 4 starters. Defensively Manitou Springs returns 6 of their top 13 tacklers and new leaders will have to step up. |
Other Teams to Watch | Basalt, University, Berthoud, Lamar, Bayfield, The Academy, Faith Christian |
