8-Man Football League Predictions Update Week 5

We are 4 weeks thru the regular season and some league play has started but most kickoff this week. Not a ton of surprises in 8-Man so far but with league kicking off I have a feeling things will really ramp up.  I eliminated just a few teams from the playoff hunt this week, but I have a feeling that list will grow next week.  Playoff Predictions and Projections will be posted separate.

Arkansas Valley League

#1 Holly

#2 Fowler

#3 Hoehne

#4 Wiley

#5 Crowley County

#6 McClave

#7 Las Animas

#8 Springfield

Holly stays as my pick to win the Ark Valley League.  Holly currently is 2-1 and 1-0 in league play.  Holly picked up their first league win beating Springfield 46-6.  Holly will now travel to Wiley this week in a huge league clash.  Wiley kicked their season off with a 30-14 win over Crowley County.  This was a big surprise, and we will see if Wiley can pull another upset.  Fowler kicked off league play with a 42-8 win over McClave.  Fowler will host Las Animas this week.  Fowler will look to stay undefeated in league especially with the final 4 games in league all being tough.  Las Animas is currently 1-2 and sit at #28 in the RPI.  The Ark Valley league will not be an easy road and Las Animas will probably need a win over Crowley County, Wiley, McClave, or Fowler to boost their RPI.  Las Animas is not eliminated from the playoff hunt this week but next week could be a must win game.  Hoehne moves to my pick to finish 3rd.  Hoehne currently is 2-1 on the season and will host Springfield this week.  This is a must win for Hoehne who sits at #14 in the RPI.  Hoehne cannot afford to drop this game.  Springfield is currently 0-3 and sit outside the top 30 of the RPI.  I think Springfield is eliminated from the playoff hunt but all it takes is one upset to move back into the hunt.  Crowley County was upset last week by Wiley 30-14.  Crowley County now sits outside the top 16 of the RPI and are looking to bounce back against McClave.  This is a big battle for RPI position and league position as well.  McClave lost last weekend to Fowler and will also look to bounce back.  McClave sits at #20 in the RPI.  Crowley County vs McClave will be a big matchup to see who can keep their playoffs hopes alive.

In the Playoff Hunt

RPI Standings (As of 9/23)

Central League

#1 Front Range Christian

#2 Lyons

#3 Elbert

#4 Byers

#5 Justice

#6 South Park

The Central League looks more and more like whoever wins the league is the only team that will get into the playoffs.  Front Range Christian took the first big step defeating Elbert 32-26.  Front Range Christian moves to 1-0 in league and will face South Park this week.  A win for Front Range Christian moves them to 2-0 in league but big games remain against Lyons and Byers.  South Park will look to find a spark in league play and pull the upset.  Elbert dropped to 0-1 in league and this week will face Byers.  This is a crucial game for both teams.  Elbert with the win will keep pace on Front Range Christian.  Byers with the win moves into a tie for first place and hope to defeat FRC to win the league title.  Lyons has a non-league matchup with Merino this weekend.

RPI Standings (As of 9/23)

Mountain League

#1 Sanford

#2 Mancos

#3 Dove Creek

#4 Sargent

#5 Norwood

Sanford stays as my pick to win the Mountain League.  Sanford is currently 4-0 overall and 1-0 in league play.  Sanford moves out of league play this week and will face undefeated Vail Christian.  Sanford will look to stay undefeated, and we will see how much their defense has improved.  Sanford will move back into league play next weekend against Norwood.  Mancos also moves out of league play this week and face 11-Man Montezuma-Cortez (2A).  This is a very interesting matchup, and we will see how Mancos will matchup with the size of Montezuma-Cortez.  Next week Mancos moves back into league play and has a huge matchup against Dove Creek. Dove Creek will kick off league play this week when they host Norwood.  Dove Creek will look to bounce back from their first loss of the season to Gunnison.  Norwood is currently 0-2 on the season and in a bit of rebuilding mode.  Norwood is eliminated from the playoff hunt.  Sargent is also eliminated from the playoff hunt baring an upset of Mancos or Dove Creek.  Sargent sits at #30 in the RPI.

Northwest League

#1 Vail Christian

#2 Plateau Valley

#3 Rangely

#4 Hayden

#5 Soroco

#6 West Grand

#7 Gilpin County

Vail Christian is my pick to win the Northwest League.  Vail Christian has a huge non-league matchup against Sanford at home this week.  This will benefit both teams RPI and give us a good look at the top contenders in each league.  Vail Christian moves back into league play next week against Plateau Valley.  Plateau Valley stays as my pick to finish 2nd.  Plateau Valley will host Rangely this week.  This is a big matchup with both teams needing wins to stay in the hunt for the league title.  Plateau Valley defeated Gilpin County last week 52-16.  Rangely lost to Calhan 22-14 last week and continues to stretch of tough losses late in games.  Neither team is eliminated yet form the playoff hunt with the loss but will need to win out.  Hayden picked up the league win over West Grand last week 36-24.  Hayden keep their playoff hopes alive with the win but now face a must win game against Gilpin County this Friday at home.  Hayden sits at #19 in the RPI and end the season against the top 3 teams so winning this week is key.  Soroco fell to Vail Christian last week.  This week Soroco will face West Grand and the winner keeps their playoff hopes alive and the loser will be eliminated from the playoff race.  Both teams will need help going forward but losing this game will eliminate one team.

In the Playoff Hunt

Gilpin County

RPI Standings (As of 9/23)

Plains League

#1 Sedgwick County

#2 Haxtun

#3 Merino

#4 Dayspring Christian

#5 Akron

#6 Caliche

#7 Denver Christian

Sedgwick County stays as my pick to win the Plains League.  Sedgwick County moved to 1-0 in league play with a 18-12 victory over Merino.  Sedgwick County continues the tough run of games when they travel to face Akron.  This is another big test for Sedgwick County who used a special teams TD to help defeat Merino.  Akron is coming off a 58-18 loss to Dayspring Christian.  Akron will look to bounce back and look to improve their run defense as they were shredded by Dayspring Christian.  Both teams are still very much in the playoff hunt regardless of the outcome.  Haxtun is now my pick to finish second in league but face their first true test of the season this week against Dayspring Christian.  Haxtun has not played the toughest schedule but start their gauntlet of the schedule this week.  We will learn a lot about how good Haxtun is this week.  Dayspring Christian moved to 1-0 in league play blasting Akron 58-18.  Dayspring Christian has improved defensively since giving up 60 to Sanford.  Dayspring Christian will have their hands full defensively against physical Haxtun team.  Both teams sit inside the top 10 of the RPI and will be in good shape regardless of outcome.  Merino has a non-league game this week against Lyons.  This will be a good shot for Merino to bounce back after falling to Sedgwick County 18-12.  Merino sits at #9 in the RPI but a loss could really hurt their RPI.  Caliche is outside the top 16 currently in the RPI but in the hunt still for a playoff berth.  Caliche has a must win game against Denver Christian.  Caliche cannot afford to drop this game to Denver Christian.  Caliche will probably need an upset in one of their final 4 games to get a playoff spot.

Denver Christian

Southern League

#1 Pikes Peak Christian

#2 Calhan

#3 Simla

#4 Swink

#5 Dolores Huerta

#6 John Mall

#7 Custer County

Calhan stays as my pick to finish second in the Southern League.  Calhan opens league play against rival Simla on Saturday.  Calhan will look to take a very important step inside league play and will have their hands full against a very good Simla team.  Simla is coming off a tough 16-14 loss to Pikes Peak Christian.  Simla will now look to rebound and keep pace with Pikes Peak Christian.  Loser of this game won’t be eliminated from the playoff race but will hurt if only two teams from the Southern League get in.  Pikes Peak Christian is now my pick to win the Southern League.  PPC picked up the big 16-14 victory over Simla last week.  Defensively PPC is one of the tougher units in the state.  PPC will host John Mall this week.  PPC will hope to keep atop the league standings.  John Mall will be playing just their second game of the season.  John Mall RPI right now has them outside of the playoff hunt but an upset of PPC could change that.  Swink picked up their first league win of the season and they have a bye this week.  Swink sits at #16 in the RPI.  Swink will have a difficult schedule to end the season with 3 of their final 5 games being against top league opponents.  Dolores Huerta stays in my playoff hunt category.  Dolores Huerta has a must win game against Custer County this week.  A loss and Dolores Huerta drops out of the playoff hunt.  Dolores Huerta will probably need an upset of a top 4 team to really push for the playoffs.
