Class 2A League Predictions Update Week 5

Class 2A League Predictions and Playoff Predictions Week 5

We head into the 5th week of the season and a lot of teams will have byes before we kick off league play next week.  I was able to eliminate a few teams from the playoff race but most are dependent on league play.  Still some great games upcoming this week. (Can always use more Class 2A pictures!!!!!!)

Colorado League

#1 Elizabeth

#2 Englewood

#3 Kent Denver

#4 Denver West

#5 Alameda

The Colorado League has been super interesting and as we head into the 5th week of the season, I am thinking the Colorado may just get 1 team into the playoffs maybe two.  Elizabeth stays as my pick to win the Colorado League.  Elizabeth moved to 3-2 on the season blasting Fort Lupton last night 61-0.  Elizabeth opens league play on 10/1 against Englewood.  Englewood looks to move to .500 on the season.  Englewood will face Northfield tonight and is a huge game in terms of RPI and making a move into a playoff position.  Englewood is currently sitting at #26 in the RPI.  Kent Denver has a bye this week and will enter league play at 2-2 overall.  Kent Denver kicks off league play against Denver West.  Denver West has been the biggest surprise to start the season so far.  Denver West moved to 2-2 on the season blast Jefferson last night 48-2.  Denver West will like to push for a playoff spot and a top 3 finish in league.  Alameda is also still in the playoff hunt at #25 in the RPI.  Alameda has a must win game against Pinnacle tonight to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Flatirons League

#1 Faith Christian

#2 D’Evelyn

#3 Middle Park

#4 Northfield

#5 Arvada

#6 Pinnacle

The Flatirons League is probably going to only get the league champion into the playoffs.  Faith Christian is my pick to win the Flatirons League.  Faith Christian is currently 1-2 and continue the rough stretch of games this week facing #1 Eaton.  Faith Christian will be battle tested heading into league.  D’Evelyn will head into league play at 1-3 overall.  D’Evelyn has a bye this week and sit at #24 in the RPI.  D’Evelyn kick off league play on 10/1 against Middle Park.  Middle Park is in a bit of trouble sitting at #38 in the RPI.  Middle Park will have to win their league to get into the playoffs.  Middle Park has a non-league game against Summit tonight and then kick off league play against D’Evelyn on 10/1.  Northfield has the best RPI currently in the Flatirons League.  Northfield is currently 1-2 and have a big non-league matchup tonight against Englewood.  This should be a good contest for both teams.  Arvada will enter league play at 1-1.  Arvada has a bye this week but open league plat against Pinnacle.

Patriot East League

#1 Platte Valley

#2 Brush

#3 Weld Central

#4 Sterling

#5 Valley

#6 Fort Lupton

Platte Valley is my pick to win the Patriot East League.  Platte Valley lost to Eaton 32-0 last week but fought hard in the contest.  Platte Valley this week will face Berthoud.  Platte Valley needs this game to keep their at-large hopes alive.  Brush slides into the #2 spot this week.  Brush lost to severance 20-7 last week.  Brush will look to rebound before league kicks off with an away game at Estes Park.  Weld Central currently sits at 1-2-1 and is coming off a 28-12 loss to Highland.  Weld Central fell to outside the top 16 in the RPI and will look to make a big run during league play.  Weld Central will kick league play off against Sterling next week.  Sterling is currently 0-4 and played a tough non-league schedule.  Sterling is still in the playoff hunt despite the 0-4 start and sit at #22 in the RPI.  Sterling has a bye this week to prepare for their first league game against Weld Central.  Valley and Fort Lupton are eliminated from the playoff hunt.

Patriot West League

#1 Eaton

#2 Resurrection Christian

#3 Severance

#4 University

#5 The Academy

#6 Berthoud

The Patriot West could easily see as many as 5 teams make the playoffs this year.  Eaton stays as my pick to win the Patriot West.  Eaton is currently 3-0 and face Faith Christian tonight.  Eaton will be the heavy favorite and will be a good test before heading into league play.  Eaton kicks off league play against The Academy.  Resurrection Christian stays as my second-place team.  Resurrection Christian is currently 2-0 and this week they have their hands full against 3A Top 10 Holy Family.  This will be a very good test for Resurrection Christian before heading into league play.  Resurrection Christian opens league play against Berthoud.  Severance has done a great job of setting the tone for their program and back to back wins against quality opponents has them in the hunt for a top seed in the playoffs.  Severance has a bye this week and will enter league play at 4-0.  Severance kicks off league play against University.  University has a bye this week and will enter league play at 3-1.  As just mentioned University will kick off league play against Severance.  The Academy is currently 3-0 but have yet to be truly tested and won’t until league play kicks off.  The Academy hosts Prospect Ridge this week and should enter league play at 4-0.  The Academy kicks off league play against Eaton so this game could be a trap game.  Berthoud I leave in the playoff hunt this week.  If Berthoud loss to Platte Valley they drop to 1-3 and we will have to see what their RPI looks like next week.  Berthoud currently sits at #35 in the RPI.

Southwest League

#1 Alamosa

#2 Bayfield

#3 Pagosa Springs

#4 Montezuma-Cortez

#5 Salida

Alamosa is my pick to win the Southwest League.  Alamosa currently sits at 2-1 overall and host Manitou Springs this week.  This will be a test to see how Alamosa shapes up against other 2A teams.  Alamosa will be the heavy favorite and cannot overlook Manitou Springs.  Alamosa opens league play against Pagosa Springs 10/1.  Bayfield stays as my pick to finish 2nd in the Southwest League.  Bayfield currently is 2-1 with their quality win coming over Englewood.  Bayfield will look to add a quality win this week when they host Centauri.  This will be the toughest game Bayfield has played so far.  Bayfield opens league play 10/1 against Salida.  Pagosa Springs moved into the win column with the 41-30 win over Kirtland Central NM.  Pagosa Springs is still in the playoff hunt at #28 in the RPI.  Pagosa Springs will need to win the games they are favored in but may need an upset of Bayfield or Alamosa to get in.  Montezuma-Cortez is also still in the playoff hunt at #30 in the RPI.  Montezuma-Cortez will travel to face 8-Man Mancos and this should be a solid test for both teams.  Cortez won’t kick league play off until 10/8 when they play Pagosa Springs.

Tri-Peaks League

#1 Classical Academy

#2 La Junta

#3 Lamar

#4 Woodland Park

#5 Manitou Springs

Classical Academy will be the heavy favorite and my pick to win the Tri-Peaks League.  TCA will enter league play at 3-0 and have a bye this week.  TCA opens league play against La Junta on 10/1.  TCA has to be considered a contender for the Class 2A State Title.  La Junta is my pick to finish second in the Tri-Peaks.  La Junta moved to 2-2 on the season with a 45-22 win over Salida.  La Junta has a bye this week and open league play against TCA.  Lamar is currently 1-2 overall and sit outside the top 30 of the RPI.  Lamar will have to really turn things around to make a push for a playoff spot.  Lamar can do just that when they travel to Holyoke this week.  Woodland Park will enter league play at 1-2 and have a bye this week.  Woodland Park will open league play against Lamar on 10/1.  Manitou Springs is still in the playoff hunt but we will have to watch what their RPI does after they travel to Alamosa this week.

West League

#1 Rifle

#2 Delta

#3 Basalt

#4 Moffat County

#5 Aspen

#6 Coal Ridge

The West League is going to be tough this year and I think the top 4 teams can all win this league.  I am sticking with Rifle this week.  Rifle moved to 2-2 on the season with a 42-10 win over Faith Christian last week.  Rifle has a bye this week and open league play against Aspen on 10/1.  Delta is currently 3-1 and have a bye this week.  Delta defeated Montezuma-Cortez last week 49-8.  Delta will kick off league play on 10/1 against Coal Ridge.  Basalt has been a big surprise and currently sit at 4-0.  Basalt defeated Glenwood Springs last week 34-14.  Basalt will open league play up against Moffat County and this will be a battle between two of the top teams in league.  Moffat County is currently 3-0 and will hit the road to face 3A Kennedy.  This should be a good test for Moffat County.  Moffat County will open league play as mentioned against Basalt.  Aspen is still in the playoff hunt and have an RPI of 31.  Aspen can really boost their chances if they can upset Steamboat Springs this Friday.
