Class 2A Boys Basketball District Predictions Week 10

We have about 10 days left of the regular season and things are getting crazy in these final days.  Some districts will be seeded by their league standings and other will be seeded by RPI.  Two more big weekend of games before we jump into district games.  Seeding will be key in most district tournament to try and push for an automatic berth.  Here is a quick reminder of how-to quality for Regionals; Each District qualifies 3 teams to regionals, with the remaining 8 teams determined by the next highest RPI scores.

District 1

Automatic Regional Qualifier Predictions:

1. Sanford

2. Crested Butte

3. Monte Vista

Regional Contenders:

Del Norte

Custer County

Lake County

Center

District 1 will be seeded by head-to-head matchups/league standings.  If the season ended today (2/10) the seeds would be: #1 Sanford, #2 Crested Butte, #3 Monte Vista, #4 Del Norte #5 Custer County, #6 Center, #7 Lake County, #8 South Park, #9 Trinidad, #10 Sargent.  2 pigtail games would be played I believe on Monday.  The #8 vs #9 and the #7 vs #10.  The Quarterfinals would take place Tuesday with the higher seeds hosting and then semifinals would be Friday at Adam State.  (I believe this is pretty accurate).  Seeding wise Lake County is the only team I am not sure how they are factored in and have heard a few different things.  I am staying with Sanford as my District 1 Champions.  Sanford fell to Centauri on Tuesday but will look to bounce back tonight against Sargent.  Sanford will have 3 tough games to end the season against Ignacio, Center, and Del Norte.  The Del Norte game will have implications on seeding.  Crested Butte is my pick to finish in second place.  Crested Butte looks to be peaking at the right time and beating Del Norte and Center have moved into the #2 seed spot.  Crested Butte has also improved their RPI.  Crested Butte will host Gunnison tomorrow night before a huge clash with Monte Vista on Saturday.  Crested Butte must also face Custer County next week another game that will impact seeding for the District Tournament.  Monte Vista moves into my pick to finish in 3rd place.  Monte Vista started the season out rough but are coming together at the right time and their physical style of defense has won them 4 straight games including key wins over Custer County, Center, and Del Norte.  Monte Vista still has 4 league games remaining but a win over South Park tomorrow should lock up a top 3 spot.  The big game is Saturday vs Crested Butte and a win could see Monte Vista jump into the #2 seed.  Del Norte is my pick to finish in 4th place in the District but their RPI has dropped from a mid-20 RPI to #30.  Del Norte is on the bubble and have a must win against South Park tonight.  Del Norte probably needs a win over Center as well before heading into a tough stretch of 3 games.  Del Norte can still improve their district seed but would have to upset Sanford the final game of the season.  Custer County has the next highest RPI at #24 and sit right now as the #5 seed.  Custer County is 8-5 overall and coming off a solid win over Primero on Tuesday.  Custer County will face another 1A opponent in Cotopaxi tonight before jumping into 2A to end the season.  Custer County can also still improve their seed in the district tournament, and it comes down to their game against Crested Butte.  Center still has hopes alive for an at-large berth as they sit at #29.  Big problem for Center is just 2 games remain and they are against rivals Del Norte (2/12) and Sanford (2/18).  Center may need both or a big showing in the District tournament to keep their at-large hopes alive.  Lake County is the final team to mention.  Lake County sits at 9-8 overall and #31 in the RPI.  Their league schedule puts them against mostly 3A opponents and they will be battle tested for the District Tournament.  Lake County did play Custer County, Sargent, and Del Norte early in the season losing to just Del Norte.  Lake County will need a big showing and if they enter as the #7 seed will have their work cut out.

RPI for District 1

#8 Sanford, #23 Crested Butte, #24 Custer County, #29 Center, #30 Del Norte, #31 Lake County, #41 Monte Vista

District 2

Automatic Regional Qualifier Predictions:

1. Yuma

2. Wray

3. Holyoke

Regional Contenders:

Wiggins

Sedgwick County

Akron

I believe the District 2 tournament will be seeded by league standings/head-to-head.  Burlington is the lone team outside the Lower Platte, but they played all teams and will enter I believe as the #7 seed.  If the season ended today (2/10) your seeds would be: #1 Yuma, #2 Wray, #3 Wiggins, #4 Holyoke, #5 Sedgwick County, #6 Akron, #7 Burlington.  Of course, Wiggins still must face Holyoke, Wray, and Burlington so I think they will end up at the #4 spot.  Yuma would get the Bye into the Semifinals and need just 1 win to snag a automatic spot.  I think the #4 vs #5 game especially if it’s between Wiggins and Sedgwick County will be very good.  I am sticking with Yuma as my District 2 Champions.  Yuma is 15-1 with their lone loss to 3A Eaton in OT.  Yuma has been tested down the stretch by Wray and Holyoke.  Yuma close out the season against Merino, Caliche, and Sedgwick County but are in very good position to lock up the #1 seed.  Yuma game against 1A Merino could be for the regular season Lower Platte Crown.  Wray is my pick to finish in second in the district.  Wray cannot wrap up the #2 seed till they face Sedgwick County tonight and Wiggins on Saturday.  Of Wray 5 losses, 2 are to Yuma, 1 to Limon, and 2 are to out of state opponents.  Holyoke is my pick to finish in 3rd place and lock up the automatic spot.  Holyoke right now is behind Wiggins in the league standings, but they square off for the #3 seed tonight.  Holyoke, I think gets the win and gets the #3 spot.  Holyoke close the season out against Akron and Caliche.  Wiggins is my pick to finish in 4th so they would not get the automatic berth but are in very good position to snag a at-large berth.  Wiggins sits at #22 in the RPI and are on the bubble.  Wiggins has 5 games remaining and probably need at least 2 wins in that span to lock up a spot or have a good district tournament.  Wiggins kicks things off tonight against Holyoke.  Akron is another contender for an at-large berth.  Akron sits at #32 in the RPI but would be one the outside looking in currently.  Akron has 4 games remaining and their season finale against Sedgwick County could make or break them getting in as an at-large team.  Sedgwick County sits at #43 in the RPI.  Winning is key for Sedgwick County to make a run at regionals but they are sitting way back.

RPI for District 2

#1 Yuma, #7 Wray, #16 Holyoke, #22 Wiggins, #32 Akron, #43 Sedgwick County, #51 Burlington

District 3

Automatic Regional Qualifier Predictions:

1. Mancos

2. Ignacio

3. Cedaredge

District Contenders:

4. Dolores

I believe the District 3 tournament will be seeded by RPI as two different leagues will join up.  If it’s seeded by RPI the seeds as of today (2/10) would be: #1 Mancos, #2 Cedaredge, #3 Ignacio, #4 Dolores, #5 Telluride, #6 Olathe, #7 Ridgway.  Mancos would get a bye into the semifinals and would need just 1 win to get the automatic berth to regionals.  If seeded like it’s I think Ignacio vs Dolores would be a very intriguing matchup.  I am sticking with Mancos as my District 3 Champion.  Mancos is 14-2 currently and they look to have secured things in their league with a 55-36 win over Ignacio last week.  Mancos will face Ridgway tonight, but a key game remains against Dolores to end the season.  Ignacio stays as my pick to finish in second place.  Ignacio is 9-4 currently and have a tough schedule down the stretch to improve their RPI.  Ignacio will face Sanford on Friday and Ridgway on Saturday.  Ignacio final week will have them face Del Norte, Telluride, and Dolores to end the season.  Cedaredge is my pick to finish in 3rd place.  Cedaredge is playing really good basketball right now and have won 6 straight games with their best win over Vail Christian.  Cedaredge have one last challenge remaining against Meeker tomorrow night.  If Cedaredge wins this game, I think they will have a shot at challenging for a high finish in this district tournament.  Dolores is the next highest RPI at #44.  I think their only shot at regionals is win out or finish in the top 3 of the District tournament.  They may just be to far back to push for an at-large berth unless they have a great 10 days.

RPI for District 3

#4 Mancos, #20 Cedaredge, #21 Ignacio, #44 Dolores, #49 Telluride, #53 Olathe, #57 Ridgway

District 4

Automatic Regional Qualifier Predictions:

1. Denver Christian

2. Limon

3. Lotus School

Regional Contenders:

Byers

Platte Canyon

Front Range Christian

Golden View Classical

My guess is the District 4 Tournament will be seeded by RPI.  This is very important as to avoid early tough games.  Seeding if the season ended today (2/10) would be #1 Denver Christian, #2 Limon, #3 Lotus School, #4 Byers, #5 Front Range Christian, #6 Golden View Classical #7 Platte Canyon, #8 Clear Creek, #9 Addenbrooke, #10 Denver Academy.  Two pigtail games would be played between the #8 vs #9 and the #7 vs #10.  The quarterfinals would have some interesting matchups between #4 Byers vs #5 Front Range Christian, #6 Golden View Classical vs #3 Lotus School.  Some teams will need good showings in the District tournaments to keep their at-large hopes alive.  I am sticking with Denver Christian as my District 4 champions.  Denver Christian is 13-2 currently and on a 11 game winning streak.  Denver Christian has 3 games remaining against Longmont Christian, Dawson School, and a key RPI game against Heritage Christian.  Limon is my pick to finish in second place.  Limon is currently 13-3 and coming off a OT win over Burlington.  Limon had to battle to get that win and now go into another tough matchup with Byers tomorrow night.  Limon will end the season against Fowler and Kit Carson.  Lotus School stays as my pick to finish in 3rd place and get the final automatic berth.  Lotus School is 13-3 and should get wins in their final 2 games.  Lotus School besides their loss to DSST-Conservatory Green has not been challenged since early January.  Byers is my pick to finish in 4th and compete for an at-large berth.  Byers is 11-4 currently and sit at #19 in the RPI.  They are not on the bubble exactly with a bit of room but a bad loss will get them on the bubble.  Byers will face Limon tomorrow night but the must win games are the next 3 after.  Front Range Christian is another at-large contender with the #26 RPI.  FRC has stumbled as of late losing 4 of their last 5 games.  FRC needs a win to keep their RPI up or may need a good showing in the District Tournament.  FRC will face Union Colony Prep tonight but next week game against Gilpin County is a must win game.  Golden View Classical is another at-large contender but on the bubble at #27 in the RPI.  Golden View Classical would enter the District Tournament as a #6 seed so improving their RPI is important.  Golden View Classical has 3 games remaining and all 3 may be must win games.  Platte Canyon is the last team to mention with a #37 RPI.  The need wins or could see their at-large berth slip away.

RPI for District 4

#2 Denver Christian, #3 Limon, #9 Lotus School, #19 Byers, #26 Front Range Christian, #27 Golden View Classical, #37 Platte Canyon, #47 Clear Creek, #59 Addenbrooke Classical, #62 Denver Academy

District 5

Automatic Regional Qualifier Predictions:

1. Meeker

2. Vail Mountain

3. Vail Christian

Regional Contenders:

Plateau Valley

Rangely

Soroco

I believe the District 5 tournament will be seeded by league standings/head-to-head.  If the season ended today (2/10) the seeding would be: #1 Meeker, #2 Vail Mountain, #3 Vail Christian, #4 Plateau Valley, #5 Rangely, #6 Soroco, #7 Hayden.  Meeker would get the bye into the semifinals and would need just 1 win to get the automatic berth.  I think the #4 vs #5 quarterfinals match would be a great game.  I am sticking with Meeker as my District 5 champion.  Meeker is 11-3 and on a hot streak.  Meeker needs to win 3 of their final 4 league games to snag the #1 seed in the District tournament.  Meeker matchup against Cedaredge on Friday should be a good one.  Vail Mountain is my pick to finish in second place.  Vail Mountain is 12-3 currently but a solid win over Vail Christian gives them the leg up on the #2 seed. Vail Mountain has two games remaining against Olathe and Soroco so should say just 1 game back of Meeker.  Vail Christian is 10-6 currently and are tied with Vail Mountain in the standings but lost the head-to-head.  Vail Christian still must face Plateau Valley, Olathe, and North Park to end the season.  I think Plateau Valley finishes in 4th place but their RPI would have them on the outside looking in at #34.  Plateau Valley has 4 key games remaining and they probably need at least 2 to try and improve their RPI.  Rangely is the next closest at #40 in the RPI.  They need a strong finish to the season to push for an at-large berth.

RPI for District 5

#6 Vail Mountain, #10 Meeker, #17 Vail Christian, #34 Plateau Valley, #40 Rangely, #42 Soroco, #54 Hayden

District 6

Automatic Regional Qualifier Predictions:

1. Holly

2. Fowler

3. Crowley County

Regional Contenders:

Rye

Las Animas

Hoehne

Swallows Charter

My guess is the District 6 tournament would be seeded by the League Standings since all team reside in the Santa Fe League.  IF that is the case and if the season ended today (2/10) the seeding for the district tournament would be: #1 Holly #2 Fowler, #3 Crowley County, #4 Rye, #5 Hoehne, #6 Swallows Charter, #7 Las Animas, #8 Swink, #9 Rocky Ford, #10 John Mall.  Two pigtail games would be played between the #8 vs #9 and #7 vs #10 seeds.  Seeding could be crucial to teams reaching regionals as at-large teams, mainly talking about Las Animas, Swallows Charter, and Hoehne.  Holly stays as my pick to winning the District 6 tournament.  Holly is 13-3 currently and a win over Rocky Ford gives them the #1 seed and regular season league title.  They face off tonight.  Holly will end the season against Cheyenne Wells and Las Animas.  Fowler stays as my pick to finish in second place.  Fowler has hit a bit of a rough patch but I think get it together for a final run in the district tournament.  They would be a 2 seed as long as they beat Hoehne and Swallows Charter.  Crowley County is my pick to finish in 3rd place and get the final automatic berth.  Crowley County cannot jump to the #2 seed unless Fowler is upset in their final 3 league games.  Crowley County would be the #3 seed as long as they beat Rocky Ford tomorrow night as they have the head-to-head over Rye.  Rye is my pick to finish 4th but I think are in good position for an at-large berth.  Rye sits at #18 in the RPI and as long as they beat Swink and Rocky Ford get the #4 seed and I think get to regionals.  Las Animas has the next highest RPI at #25.  Las Animas has struggled since entering league play and have probably slipped into the #7 seed which hurts going into the district tournament.  Las Animas needs a win over Swallows Charter and Swink to keep their RPI at #25. Tonight game against Swallows Charter is a must win for both teams.  Swallows Charter is also on the bubble at #28 and as mentioned they need a win over Las Animas tonight.  Right now Swallows Charter would go in as a #6 seed but two games remain against Fowler and they need a win against Las Animas to keep the head-to-head.  Hoehne sits at #35 in the RPI and probably need a big run in the District tournament to make a run for an at-large berth.  Also, if Hoehne wins out against Fowler and Primero could also see their RPI jump.

RPI for District 6

#5 Holly, #14 Crowley County, #15 Fowler, #18 Rye, #25 Las Animas, #28 Swallows Charter, #35 Hoehne, #50 Swink

District 7

Automatic Regional Qualifier Predictions:

1. Heritage Christian

2. Lyons

3. Union Colony Prep

Regional Contenders:

Dayspring Christian

Dawson School

District 7 will probably be seeded by the Mile High League Standings.  I am guessing that only the top 3 teams in this District get to regionals as after Heritage Christian the rest of the league is in the 30s in the RPI.  Heritage Christian remains my pick to win District 7 tournament.  Heritage Christian defeated Lyons last Saturday and probably locked up the #1 seed for the district tournament.  Heritage Christian close out the season with 2 huge non-district games against Denver Christian and Wray.  Lyons is my pick to finish in second place.  Lyons needs to finish in the top 3 as they have the #36 RPY.  Lyons still must face Dawson School and Union Colony Prep for seeding purposes and if they get the #2 seed I think have a really good shot at regionals.  Union Colony Prep is my pick for 3rd place and like Lyons they need a top 3 finish.  UCP sits at #33 in the RPI.  UCP will face Lyons next week, but an important RPI game happens tonight against Front Range Christian.  Dayspring Christian and Dawson School are mentioned because if they can upset a top 3 team and get a top 3 finish they can get to regionals.  I think both of their RPI is to low for an at-large berth.

RPI for District 7

#11 Heritage Christian, #33 Union Colony Prep, #36 Lyons, #38 Dayspring Christian, #45 Dawson School,

District 8

Automatic Regional Qualifier Predictions:

1. Peyton

2. Thomas MacLaren

3. Calhan

District Contenders:

Fountain Valley

Dolores Huerta

Colorado Springs School

District 8 will probably be seeded by the league standings in the Black Forest League.  Only atlas prep is not in that league.  Peyton and Thomas MacLaren are locks for regionals both have solid RPI numbers and I think cruise thru this district tournament.  Peyton is my pick to win the District Tournament.  Peyton will face Thomas MacLaren on 2/17 and that is for the #1 and #2 seeds.  This will be a great game.  Thomas MacLaren is my pick to finish in second place.  Thomas MacLaren has cruised thru league and their game on 2/17 against Peyton will be for the league title and #1 seed.  After the top 2 things get messy and will come down to who gets hot.  Only the top 3 will get into regionals from this District as the next highest RPI is Calhan at #39.  I am going to stick with Calhan as my pick to finish in 3rd but their loss to Colorado Springs School is a concern.  I really think Fountain Valley, Colorado Springs School, and Dolores Huerta can all challenge for the #3 spot and come down to seeding in the District Tournament and who gets hot at the right time.

RPI for District 8

#12 Thomas MacLaren, #13 Peyton, #39 Calhan, #46 Fountain Valley, #52 Colorado Springs School, #60 Dolores Huerta, #66 Atlas Prep
