Some big statements were made last night, starting in the YWKC where Otis bounced #4 Idalia in straight sets. The Bulldogs seized control of the league in just their first match that counted in those standings.

Flagler was just outside of the rankings entering the week, but after the Panthers earned a hard-fought five-set win (15-13 in the fifth) at 2A Limon, that will likely change. They will host Hi-Plains tonight in a non-league clash between programs that were part of a co-op just a couple years ago.

Ninth-ranked McClave had no trouble dispatching South Baca, as the Cardinals allowed a total of 20 points in the sweep. Abrielle Gomez had another big night, racking up 11 kills on 12 swings. In two wins this week, the freshman has 25 kills on 37 attempts, with only two errors.

The night was not without surprises, as #8 Briggsdale was swept by Weldon Valley in three competitive sets. Jenna Krise had 19 kills for the Falcons in the defeat. They are at Arickaree tonight to face a Bison squad that is coming off a four-set win over 2A Wray on Tuesday, and were sitting 14th in the rankings to begin the week.

Kim/Branson also pulled off an upset, taking down Manzanola in three sets. It was the second straight win for the Mustangs, and also the second consecutive loss for the Bobcats, who dropped a three-setter to La Veta earlier in the week.

One other match from last night saw Evangelical Christian take a 3-0 win over 2A Calhan. The Eagles are the only team with a win over Flagler so far this season.

Two of the remaining unbeatens in the classification will be in action tonight, with #3 Dove Creek hosting one-win Norwood and #5 La Veta welcoming Primero to town. Both will be heavily favored in their respective matches. They’re a combined 18-0 on the year.

Second-ranked Fleming visits Prairie in a North Central contest, with the Wildcats coming off a 3-0 sweep of Lone Star. They’ve won four straight since suffering a loss to 2A #2 Wiggins. Prairie dropped a 3-0 contest to Briggsdale in its last outing a week ago.

Seventh-ranked Kit Carson will try to rebound from its 3-0 loss to McClave earlier this week when Eads visits for a crucial High Plains match. Kenzie Wagonner leads the classification with 190 kills. #10 Cheraw is on the road at Cheyenne Wells, also in High Plains play. It’s the league opener for the Wolverines, who have won three straight without dropping a set.
