Class 1A Boys Basketball Breakdown

Boys Basketball Class 1A Regional Projections and State Predictions

Boys Basketball Class 1A Regional Projections and State Predictions

For my projections I am using the CHSAA Seeding and Selection Index.  I am going to be predicting the District Champions and may just give a quick reason as to why I picked each District Champion.  If you are a District Champion ranked in the top 16 of the Seeding Index you will automatically host a regional.  Remember to qualify for Regionals you must be ranked inside the top 32 or win your District.

Class 1A

  • District Seeding will be done by the CHSAA Seeding & Selection Index (50% Maxpreps & 50% RPI).  Maxpreps and RPI will run through Districts.
  • District Winners (8) advancing to the 32-team state bracket.  District Champions are guaranteed a top 8 (host slot) as long as they are in the top 16 of the CHSAA Seeding & Selection Index after Districts.
  • Remaining 24 teams are filled in by the CHSAA Seeding & Selection Index published after Districts.
  • Seeding criteria for the 32-team state bracket-CHSAA Seeding & Selection Index published after Districts.  Seed 9-24 are true seeded except to try and avoid league matchups in the FIRST ROUND ONLY.  Teams may be moved one spot up or down.  Teams 25-32 may be moved based upon geography and league matchups.
  • First two rounds of the state tournament (Regionals) will be hosted by the top seed in the quadrant of the bracket, over two days. (4-teams total)
  • Teams will not be reseeded prior to the final week-state championship (Final 8)
  • Top 8 teams will advance.  Class 2A Great 8 will play a Consolation Bracket.

District Tournament Winners

District 1: Dove Creek

Dove Creek appears to be the front runner in District 1.  If healthy they are the heavy favorites to land the District crown.  Nucla is in good position to make it to regional at #24.  De Beque is on the bubble at #29 and same with Ouray at #33.  Things will come down to the wire for both teams.

District 2: McClave

Going to call District 2 the toughest District in 1A.  6 of the 7 teams sit inside the top 16 of the Seeding Index and honestly seeding is going to come down to the final games of the year.  McClave remains my pick to win the district.  I think Cheyenne Wells, Cheraw, Eads, Wiley, and Granada are all locks to make it to regionals.  Kit Carson is on the bubble at #34 and will need a win and some help to jump up two spots.

District 3: La Veta

If the season ended today District 3 would not host a region.  La Veta is close though at #19 they will need wins in their final two games and mainly the game against Sierra Grande tomorrow.  Springfield is near the bubble but in solid position to make it to regionals.  Kim/Branson is 6 spots outside the top 32 at #38 and will need some help and wins to push for a top 32 spot.

District 4: Fleming

District 4 has been a two horse race for the top seeds and remains between Fleming and Briggsdale.  I believe Briggsdale will be the #1 seed and Fleming #2 and I am picking Fleming to win this District.  Both teams are locks for regionals it will just be to see who will host a regional and who will be on the road.  Longmont Christian, Peetz, and Prairie are all on the bubble.  The final few days of the regular season plus a good showing in the District Tournament will be key to making it to regionals.

District 5: Stratton

Things have heated up in District 5.  Otis last night picked up a monster win over Merino and I nearly picked them over Stratton here.  Both teams are in position to make it to regionals just sorting out who hosts is left.  Idalia and Arickaree are both in solid spots to make it to regionals at #20 and #21.  Hi-Plains is on the bubble at #27.  They must beat Bethune in their final game and will have a shot against Arickaree or Idalia as the #5 seed in the District Tournament.

District 6: Sierra Grande

Sierra Grande is holding onto a host spot at #16 in the Seeding Index.  They remain my pick to win this district but will be challenged by Centennial and Sangre De Cristo.  Sierra Grande nearly beat McClave last week and if they continue to play at that level will be tough.  Centennial is in a good spot to make regionals at #22 but need to avoid losses to Creede and Moffat in their final two games.  Sangre De Cristo is on the bubble at #26.  A win over Antonito is a must and if they can beat 2A John Mall they will also be in good shape.  Moffat is on the outside looking in and sit at #39.  They probably need an upset of Centennial in their final game plus a deep run in the District Tournament to make regionals.

District 7: Genoa-Hugo

Genoa-Hugo is my pick to win District 7.  Genoa-Hugo has some separation between themselves and PPC.  Pikes Peak Christian has fallen from #10 to #17 in the past few weeks and we will see if they can hold onto a regional spot.  Kiowa and Hanover are outside the top 32 and need a big run at the end of the year for a regional spot.

District 8: Belleview Christian

Belleview Christian defeated Denver Jewish Day and remain my pick to win District 8.  Belleview Christian will be the heavily favorite going into the post season.  Denver Jewish Day and Flatirons Academy are locks for regionals.  Front Range Baptist is also a near lock for regionals at #18 but to feel comfortable I think a win in the first round of district is key.  Denver Academy of Torah and Denver Waldorf are on the bubble but sit inside the top 32.
