Ark Valley Round Up by Randy Robinson

The Ark Valley Round up gives us a inside look into the Ark Valley as Randy Robinson dives into Football, Volleyball and Softball. It’s a great in depth dive into the regions sports.

Week 6, means a league title is up for grabs this week. Volleyball league games are now becoming more important with only a month left of the season, and football leagues are underway. The last week saw an undefeated week for softball, a 7-10 week for volleyball with one head to head and a 1-5 week for football with one head to head.

Softball

Starting us off on Tuesday, the Rocky Ford Lady Meloneers hosted Dolores Huerta at Babcock Park. The Meloneer offense came alive quickly and handled the Scorpions with ease. Rocky Ford took the win 17-0. The Meloneers kept their hunt for a Tri-Peaks league title alive on Thursday as they would travel to Florence to take on the struggling Huskies. The Meloneer bats stayed hot as they would trounce the Huskies 18-2.

La Junta has had to battle for their lives in the 3A Tri-Peaks League, they started off the week traveling down to the San Luis Valley for a battle with Alamosa, the Tigers and Mean Moose battled for most of the game before the La Junta offense caught it’s stride and ended the Moose 7-3. That would set up a huge matchup with rival Lamar for homecoming for the Tigers. Once again we saw a defensive battle to start the game as both teams traded blows. The Tigers would score the winning run on a wild pitch in the dirt as Lexi Sanchez would score, La Junta won the crucial Tri-Peaks matchup 5-4 (Side Note: when these two met earlier in the year for a non-league matchup, Lamar took the win 5-4).

Volleyball

As it has for most of the year volleyball took a majority of the schedule for us. On Tuesday two sweeps and a five set thriller were on the board. The Swallows Charter Spartans hosted the Crowley County Chargers and would win in three (25-18, 27-25, 25-18). The Rye Thunderbolts invaded the Melon Dome on Tuesday and spoiled Rocky Ford’s homecoming with a three set sweep (25-13, 25-10, 25-14). Hoehne and Swink would battle it out in a back and forth five set match, with the Farmers ultimately taking the win (17-25, 25-9, 25-20, 24-26, 15-8)

Three more sweeps took place on Thursday as the Cheraw Wolverines would take down Crowley County (25-7, 25-15, 25-14), Fowler handled Holly (25-14, 25-17, 25-17) and Las Animas would down Walsenburg (25-22, 25-15, 25-17). La Junta hosted Vanguard for the Tigers homecoming game and would send the crowd home happy with a hard fought four set win (25-22, 22-25, 25-21, 25-18). Our game of the night was in Swink with the Lions hosting the Rye Thunderbolts, in a five set victory the Thunderbolts would take the Santa Fe League win to stay atop the league (25-19, 25-11, 19-25, 22-25, 15-13).

Friday gave us two contests in the 1A classification, the Cheraw Wolverines would continue their strong season with a three set sweep of league rival Granada (25-19, 25-13, 25-13), Manzanola would fall to Pikes Peak Christian in three (25-13, 25-16, 25-16).

Saturday had the Fowler Lady Grizzlies host the Fowler Invite, the Grizzlies would come away with two wins and one loss in the tournament. They would take down Limon in three (25-15, 25-11, 25-20) and would sweep Denver Christian. Fowler’s lone loss of the tournament came at the hand of the tough Lamar Thunder in three sets (25-18, 25-16, 27-25). Las Animas would sweep Rocky Ford in a make-up game from earlier in the year. Salida bested La Junta in 3A Tri-Peaks action (25-18, 25-20, 25-22). Simla would take down Cheraw in three (25-8, 25-17, 25-22). Manzanola traveled to Kiowa but came back empty handed as it ended in a sweep for Kiowa (25-14, 25-9, 25-13). Swink would battle with McClave for a 1A/2A non-conference matchup with the Cardinals taking the four set match (25-20, 19-25, 25-18, 25-18).

Football

Football saw another rough week with our only non head to head win coming for La Junta’s homecoming. On Friday we saw Fowler defeat Crowley County 14-0, Granada take care of Cheraw 54-14, Kiowa shut out Manzanola 25-0, CSCS would spoil Rocky Ford’s homecoming with a 44-0 win and La Junta would have a strong second half against Alamosa and win 35-18.

On Saturday, Holly came to Las Animas and came out with the win 40-6 and McClave would take down Swink 58-14.
