Class 1A State Championship Breakdown and Prediction
#1 Limon vs #2 Strasburg 12/5 @10am at CSU-Pueblo
Limon is the #1 overall seed and the 2-time defending State Champions. Limon entered the playoffs with a 4-0 record and broke the 35-point mark in all 4 of those games. Limon faced Holyoke in the quarterfinals and had a big second quarter to break things open and win 41 to 15. Limon then faced Wray in the Semifinals. Limon and Wray were tied at halftime 7-7 but Limon outscored Wray 17 to 7 in the second half to snag the 24 to 14 win over Wray. Offensively Limon will look to establish the run but have shown they can throw the ball with success. The passing attack is led by Trey Hines who has 387 yards passing, 4 TDs, and 0 INTs. The rushing attack has racked up 1656 yards. The running game is led by Jeremiah Leeper (706 yards & 8 TDs) and Kory Tacha (596 yards & 12 TDs). Defensively Limon is one of the best in class 1A giving up just 48 points on the season. Ky Bandy (62 tackles), John Jaklich (28 tackles), and Kaysen Schmidt (28 tackles) lead the Limon defense. John Jaklich leads in TFL, Jeremiah Leeper leads in sacks, and Alex Carr leads in INTs. Limon will be looking for the 3-Peat this year.
Strasburg is the #2 overall seed and has made it to the State Championship for 4 straight years. Strasburg entered the playoffs with a 6-0 record and broke the 40-point mark in all 6 games and posted 6 shutouts as well. Things got much tougher once the playoffs started. Strasburg faced Meeker in the Quarterfinals and this was a great game. Strasburg was able to hold off a final drive by Meeker and secure a 36 to 34 win. In the Semifinals Strasburg made a familiar trip to Centauri for the 4th straight year. Strasburg trailed early in the game 14 to 0. Strasburg made some key adjustments and tied things up in the third quarter. Strasburg then took the lead with around 5 minutes to go in the 4th quarter and a couple INTs locked the game up. Strasburg offensively is balanced in their attack. QB Collin Russell leads the passing attack with 759 yards passing, 14 TDs, and 2 INTs. The rushing attack has racked up 1892 yards. The running game is led by Trystan Graf (866 yards & 14 TDs) and Collin Russell (358 yards & 11 TDs). Defensively Strasburg has also been very tough giving up 48 points with all 48 given up in the playoffs. Matthias Brown (49 tackles), A.J Hemphill (41 tackles), and Jack Swanson (28 tackles) lead Strasburg in Tackles. Matthias Brown leads in TFL and Jack Swanson leads Strasburg in INTs. Strasburg will look to break a 2-game losing streak to Limon in the State Championship.
This is the 3rd straight year Strasburg and Limon have meet up in the Class 1A state Championship. Limon won 13 to 7 in 2018 and Limon 26 to 13 in 2019. Strasburg will be looking to snap the losing streak and offensively QB Collin Russell will have to be the difference maker. Strasburg must have a big game from the QB but also look for Trystan Graf to break out. Defensively Strasburg must be able to stop the run and force Limon to throw. Limon offensively will turn to RBs Jeremiah Leeper and Kory Tacha to lead the way. Trey Hines also had a big game last week and could be needed to take the pressure off the running game. Defensively look for Limon to force Strasburg to pass and force some turnovers. I am going with Limon to grab their 3rd straight state title. Both teams have tons of experience but I think the tougher schedule Limon played will help them in this game.
