
Class 2A Girls Basketball Weekly Update Regionals

Regionals are upon us, and it’s win or go home. 32 teams in 8 regions compete for just 8 spots at the State Tournament. Good Luck to all teams fighting for a shot to win a State Championship. Plenty of great matchups and we dive into all 8 regions. All first-round games are Friday 3/1 unless noted otherwise.

Region 1– Hosted by Merino
#1 Merino is the host of the site 1 region after beating Haxtun 73-33, Akron 43-30, and Sedgwick County 42-20. So far this season, the Rams have played eight other 2A playoff teams and are 8-0 against these teams. Merino will kick off their regional play against Trinidad who they have not played yet this season.
#32 Trinidad will travel to Merino to face them in the first round of regional play. The Miners lost in the pigtail game last week against Del Norte 32-41 but Danica Shipley was the high scorer for Trinidad in this game with 15 points. Throughout the regular season, the team has faced eight teams that have made it into the 2A playoffs and are 1-7 against these teams.
#16 Fowler will face Sargent on the road in Merino for the first round of regionals. The Grizzlies beat Swink 61-28 where Andrea Maestas had 26 points, and Las Animas 47-23, where Jaslyn Bates had 17 points, in districts last week but lost to Hoehne in the championship game 54-29. This season, Fowler has played eight games that were against playoff opponents, some teams multiple times, and they are 2-6 against these teams.
# 17 Sargent was able to bear Center in district pigtail game last week 50-39 with Catie Deacon and Kandace Pargin both scoring 14 points, but then lost to Sanford 40-24 where Angelise Sandoval was their high scorer but was held to 7 points. The Farmers have played 8 games against playoff teams this season and are 6-2 against these teams. They will face Fowler in Merino to open their regional play.
Region 2-Hosted by Rangely
#3 Rangely won their district tournament and are hosting site 2 of regionals. They were able to beat Hayden 90-27 and West Grand 66-27 where Ashlynn Ducey was the high scorer of the game with 15 points. They have played four games against two playoff teams (West Grand and Plateau Valley) and are 4-0 in these games. They will open up their regional play and will face Twin Peaks Charter for the first time this season.
#31 Twin Peaks Charter lost a close game against Union Colony last week 54-51. This week, the Timberwolves will be traveling to Rangely to face them in the first round of regionals. TPC has faced only one playoff team this season in 2A in Loveland Classical but has faced them three times and went 2-1 against them. TCP will face Rangely in the first round of regionals in Rangely.
#14 Heritage Christian was able to get the win against Loveland Classical 50-37 last week but fell in the district championship to Dayspring Christian 32-45. This season, the Eagles have faced eight playoff teams and have done 5-3 against them. In the first round of regionals, the team will face Evangelical Christian to try to advance to the top 16 teams.
#18 Evangelical Christian Academy got the opening round win against Byers last week 37-32 but lost to Burlington in the district championship 35-58. ECA has played eight games against 2A playoff teams and are 3-5 against these teams. They will face Heritage Christian at Rangely in the first round of regionals this week.
Region 3-Hosted by Burlington
#4 Burlington won their district last week after beating Dolores Huerta 76-15, ECA 58-35, and Simla 59-49. Trinity Williams was the high scorer against Dolores Huerta with 21 points, Kiyarra Williams with 20 against ECA and Lynzee Neal with 19 points against Simla. The Cougars will kickoff regionals agaisnt Cotopaxi where the winner will play the victor between Limon and Plateau Valley.
#30 Cotopaxi lost their pigtail game against the champions in their districts, Sanford, 27-24. Hayden Eggleston was the high scorer of this game for Cotopaxi with 10 points. During the season, the Pirates faced right 2A playoff teams and went 1-7 against these teams. They will play Burlington in their first regional game.
#13 Limon in districts last week were able to beat Elbert 61-30 in the semifinal round. Jentri Marx was the high scorer for Limon in this game with 12 points. They then lost to Simla in the finals 42-50. This season they went 5-8 against teams that also made the playoffs. They will be facing Plateau Valley in the first round of regionals.
#19 Plateau Valley lost to West Grand 35-45 last week but then beat Hayden 35-30.During the season, the Cowboys played 4 playoff teams and went 1-3 against these teams. They will be fighting to make it to the top 16 teams when they face Limon. The winner of this game will play either Burlington or Cotopaxi.
Region 4-Hosted by Sanford
#5 Sanford was their district champions after they beat Cotopaxi 37-24, Sargent 40-24, and Monte Vista 47-42. Sanford went 7-4 in the 11 games they played this season that were agaisnt teams that made the playoffs this season. They will be on their home court playing Crowley County in the first round of regionals.
#28 Crowley County beat SCA 46-9 to kick off their post season play, but lost to Hoehne 30-73 and Las Animas 31-47. The Chargers have faced seven 2A playoff teams and have gone 1-6 against these teams. They will be facing Sanford in the first round of regionals to try to get to the top 16 teams.
#12 Wiggins beat Caliche in the first round of districts 29-37 with Riley Hunt being the high scorer with 9 points. The Tigers then fell to Sedgwick County in the finals 34-43 where Hunt scored 14 points and Kennedy Kerr scored 11. Against other teams playoff teams this year, Wiggins faced 12 teams and went 5-6 against them. They will be facing Las Animas to kick off regional play in Sanford.
#20 Las Animas went 2-1 in district play last week, beating Walsenburg 73-6, where Chanel LaBarge had 21 points, they then lost to Fowler 31-47, where Ava LaBarge had 8 points, and then they beat Crowley County 37-31 where Chanel LaBarge had 20 points ad Jadann Eck had 13. The Trojans are 4-4 against other playoff teams they faced this season and will face Wiggins in the first round of regionals.
Region 5-Hosted by Hoehne
#6 Hoehne won their district tournament last weekend and are now hosting the regional games at site 5. They beat Holly 72-36, Crowley County 73-30, and Fowler 54-29. High scorers for these games in order were Ellegra Gutierrez with 18 points, Janae Ramos with 19 points, Gutierrez with 25 points in the district championship. The team has played nine teams that have made the 2A playoffs this season and have gone 8-1 against these teams. They will face Byers in the first round of regionals and will be looking to make it to the next round.
#29 Byers lost to Yuma and ECA last week 34-56 and 32-37. They are now on the road to face Hoehne in the first round of regional play. The team has played seven other playoff teams throughout the season and have done 0-7 against these teams.
#11 Monte Vista went 2-1 in district play last week. They beat Custer County 55-7, with Heysenny Beltran and Zariah Archuleta both having 6 points, then beat Del Norte 40-30, with Heysenny Beltran had 18 points and Alessah Archuleta had 10 points, and they then fell to Sanford in the district championship 42-47 despite Zariah having 10 points. The Pirates have faced 10 other playoff teams and have gone 8-2 against these teams. They will play Wray in the first round of regionals and will be looking to advance to compete for their shot at a spot for state.
#21 Wray lost to Akron in 33-45 with Danyelle Davis having 6 points. Throughout the season, the Eagles have faced 10 other teams that have made the playoffs and have done 1-9 against these teams. They will face Monte Vista in the first round of regionals and will play the winner of Hoehne vs Byers.
Region 6-Hosted by Denver Christian
#9 Denver Christian beat Golden View (75-11) and Gilpin County (59-48) to win their district and host site 6 regionals. Kamiree Fuller was the high scorer against GVCA with 29 points, and Noelani Book was the high scorer against Gilpin County against 20 points. The Thunder have played eight other teams who made the playoffs this season and have gone 7-1 against these teams. They will play Loveland Classical in the first round of regionals to play for a spot at state.
#27 Loveland Classical was able to beat Poudre Community Academy in the first round of districts 67-20 with Alethia Thye having 14 points, but then lost to Heritage Christian 50-37 despite Thye having 15 points and Keira Doan having 7 points. The Lions did not play any playoff teams throughout the season and only faced their first playoff team last week. They will be facing Denver Christian to see if they can make it to top 16.
#8 Akron went 1-1 last weekend and beat Wray 45-33 where Kinsey Grauer had 18points but then lost to Merino 43-30. Akron has faced 11 playoff teams throughout the season and have gone 6-5 against these teams. The Rams will face Gilpin County and then could play the winner of Denver Christian vs Loveland Classical.
#23 Gilpin County beat Addenbrooke Classical last week 46-29 but then lost to Denver Christian 48-59 in the district championship. The Eagles have played 5 games against other playoff teams and have gone 1-4 against these teams. They will be facing Akron in the first round of regionals on 3/1.
Region 7-Hosted by Dayspring Christian
#10 Dayspring Christian won their district last week after beating Union Colony Prep 54-8 and Heritage Christian 45-32. In the first game, Eboselulu Omofoma was the high scorer of both games with 19 and 18 points. The Eagles are 4-3 against teams they have faced throughout the season agaisnt other playoff teams. They will play West Grand in the first round of regionals to try to advance to the top 16 and get s spot in state.
#24 West Grand went in the 2-1 in districts last week and beat Vail Christian 61-7, Plateau Valley 45-35, but lost 27-66. Sara Lechman had 20 points against Vail Christian, Sage Wheatley had 15 points against Plateau Valley, and Makalia Gifford had 13 points against Plateau Valley. The Mustangs are 1-5 against teams that have made the playoffs this season and they will face Dayspring Christian in the first regional round.
#7 Simla was able to beat Calhan last week 67-16 where Carlee Cox had 17 points, they beat Limon 50-42 where Kylie Maranville had 16 points, and then they lost to Burlington 49-59 where Katie Gotschall had 13 points. Against teams that made the 2A playoffs this season, Simla played 10 games against them this season and went 6-4 against these teams. They will face Caliche in the first round of regionals and if they win will face the winner of Dayspring Christian and West Grand.
#22 Caliche lost their pigtail game against Wiggins 29-37 where Karsyn Huss had 10 points. They have played five playoff teams this season and went 1-4 against these teams. They will face Simla to start their regional play and try to advance to the next round.
Region 8-Hosted by Mancos
#15 Mancos won their district last week after beating Telluride 58-21 and Ridgway 52-28. Claire Goodwin had 30 points against Telluride and Teya Yeomans had 15 points against Ridgway. The Bluejays are 8-1 against teams that have made the 2A playoffs this year and will be facing Del Norte in the first round of regionals.
#25 Del Norte was able to get the win against Trinidad last week 41-32 but fell to Monte Vista in the semifinals 30-40. Emma Parra and Balie Laymon where both high scorers against Trinidad with 13 points a piece and Parra was the high scorer against Monte Vista with 12 points. The Tigers are 5-5 against other playoff teams played this season. The last time Del Norte and Mancos met, Mancos won 36-30, so the close game could be a preview of a good game between the two teams.
#2 Sedgwick County was able to get the win against Holyoke 45-35 with Abigail Dille having the most points with 26 points, they beat Wiggins 43-34 where Dille had 19 points and Avery Goddard had 9 points, but they then fell to Merino in the district championship where Dille was held to only 8 points. The Cougars are 7-2 against other playoff teams and they will face Center in the first round of regionals.
#26 Center lost to Sargent in the district pigtail game last week 39-50 even though Alicia Rios had 15 points and Yanelli Garcia had 11 points. Center is 3-7 against 2A teams that made the playoffs this season and will face Sedgwick County in the first round of regionals.
