Class 2A Football Week 5 Top Ten Breakdown
Heading into week 5 of the football season and we have hit the final game of the non-league schedule for most if not all teams. Next week we will do are first league breakdown and do some league predictions. Inside the top 10 this week there are no changes inside the top 8 but we have some changes towards the bottom. We have a new team in the rankings with Lamar joining in the rankings at #9. Eaton holds the #10 spot despite the loss, but it was 14-10.
#1 Sterling (3-1)
Sterling picked up their first loss of the season losing to Scottsbluff NE. Scottsbluff is a good loss for Sterling as Scottsbluff NE is the #4 team overall in the state for Nebraska and the #1 team in their Class. Sterling lost 36-13 but this was a very valuable game for Sterling to play. Sterling this week has a bye before opening league play against Valley on 10/4. Sterling has finally posted stats this season and they are being led on offense by QB Brock Shalla who has 627 yards passing and 295 yards rushing. Sterling will be tested inside the Patriot East but they will go in as the slight favorite over Platte Valley.
#2 Delta (3-0)
Delta is off to a great start at 3-0. Delta has not been tested so far this season and have not played the toughest schedule either. Delta first big test of the year will come this weekend against Bennett (2-1) Delta has not given up a point on defense so far this year and is outscoring opponents 161-0. Delta offensively is a able to strike both on the ground and thru the air. Nolan Bynum is leading the passing attack with 436 yards passing, 9 TDs and 0 INTs. The rushing attack is led by Timothy Horn who has 164 yards rushing and 1 TD. Bennett is 2-1 on the season and picked up their second win of the season beating Ridge View Academy 46-18. Bennett is a run heavy offense and is led by Mac Copeland with 264 yards. Defensively Delta must limit the rushing attack of Bennett to win this game. Offensively Delta must continue to stay Balanced. This should be a great test for Delta.
#3 Alamosa (3-0)
Alamosa continues their amazing start and moved to 3-0 on the season blasting Mitchell 56-2. Alamosa offensively dominated thru the air passing for 156 yards and 3 TDs. The rushing attack was solid picking up just 85 yards. The defense for Alamosa was the difference in the game holding Mitchell to 0 points in the game. Next up for Alamosa is a road trip to face #9 Lamar. Alamosa will be facing a team who can spread you out and probably a very similar offense to their own. Defensively Alamosa will need to key in on QB Zane Rankin and RB Walker Kee. Offensively Alamosa has proven they can play against top defenses to their offense must be ready to have a big day. Look for QB Brendon Madril and RB Luke Smith to have big days for Alamosa. This will be another tough top 10 matchup for Alamosa.
#4 Platte Valley (3-1)
Platte Valley finished their non-league schedule going 3-1 and suffering their lone loss to 3A Lutheran (2-1). Platte Valley has picked up 3 solid wins in the non-league schedule with wins over Berthoud, Elizabeth, and last week with a huge 14-10 victory over rival Eaton. Platte Valley will go in just behind Sterling as the favorite to win the Patriot East but I expect Platte Valley to be a contender for a playoff spot.
#5 La Junta (2-1)
La Junta moved to 2-1 on the season and picked up a huge bounce back win over Kent Denver 22-7. La Junta in both wins were able to hold teams to just 7 points and hopefully La Junta has righted the ship for the rest of the year. La Junta this week faces Raton NM (3-2). This could be a interesting matchup for La Junta with Raton being #8 in Class 3A NM. La Junta defensively must be able to stop the run and limit what Raton can do. Offensively we will hope to see La Junta continue to improve.
#6 Rifle (3-0)
Rifle continued their perfect start to the season picking up a big 48-22 victory over 3A Pueblo County. Rifle had a huge day on the ground rushing for 354 yards as a team. Levi Warfel had the biggest day of all rushers with 220 yards rushing and 4 TDs. Defensively Pueblo County was able to score some points, but Rifles defense was able to limit their rushing attack to just 203 yards. Up next for Rifle is a road trip to Glenwood Springs. Glenwood Springs is 0-3 on the season but have played tough against Harrison and Holy Family. This could be another good test for Rifle. Rifle will look to dominate the line of scrimmage once again this week.
#7 Resurrection Christian (2-1)
Resurrection Christian moved to 2-1 with a big 21-3 road victory over previously ranked Classical Academy. Defensively Resurrection Christian played a huge game holding TCA to just 125 yards of total offense and all came on the ground. Resurrection Christian had big performances on defense by Tanner Applebee and Sawyer Shepherd. Resurrection Christian offensively was limited as well but key plays from Buck Coors got them the 21 points they needed. Resurrection Christian must be happy with the way their defense played but their offense will continue to hope to improve. Up next for Resurrection Christian is a game against Weld Central. Weld Central is 1-2 on the year and they have lost back to back games. Weld Central played University and lost 21-7 two weeks ago and University is in the same league as Resurrection Christian, so this is a bit of a measuring game for Resurrection Christian. I see Resurrection Christian dominating this game with their defense, but we will see if their offense can get going.
#8 Faith Christian (2-1)
Faith Christian moved to 2-1 on the season picking up a huge 56-0 victory over Manitou Springs. Faith Christian had a big day on the ground rushing for 303 yards. RB Edoardo Castaneda had a big day with 212 yards rushing and 4 TDs. Defensively this was their second straight shut out but their next game will be another huge test. Faith Christian will host University who is just outside the top 10. University is 2-1 on the season and are looking for their 3rd straight win. University likes to pass the ball so Faith Christian defense must be ready for the passing attack. Offensively Faith Christian must get the ground game going but this will be a great test for both teams!
#9 Lamar (2-1)
Lamar moves into the top 10 picking up a big 43-27 win over Burlington. Lamar is 2-1 on the season with their lone loss coming to #1 Limon (1A). Lamar offensively is balanced in their attack with 629 yards passing and 797 yards rushing. Zane Rankin leads the passing attack and Walker Kee is leading the way for the rushing attack. This week Lamar faces #3 Alamosa. This will be another huge test for Lamar and seeing how far this team has come. Offensively this will be a massive test for the offense. Alamosa has limited three teams to under 20 points and their defense can really fly around using their speed. Lamar must take care of the ball and not turn it over. Defensively Lamar must be able to handle a spread offense that can throw the ball well. This will be a huge test for Lamar.
#10 Eaton (1-2)
Eaton picked up their second loss of the season losing to Platte Valley last week 14-10. It was a hard-fought game for Eaton, and they came up just short giving up the touchdown in the fourth quarter. Offensively Eaton had a productive day throwing for 125 yards and rushing for 159 yards, but 4 turnovers hurt the offense. Eaton defensively played well holding Platte Valley to just 14 points and big performances by Morgan Tribbett and Juan Maravilla were key to that. Eaton this week faces Machebeuf at home. This is a big game for Eaton and seeing how they bounce back again. Eaton defensively must stop the run to have success in this game. Offensively Eaton must take care of the football to come out with the win.
