Class 1A Football First Round Breakdown

We move into the first round of the playoffs.  Some very intriguing match ups in the first round.  I will not give my prediction on game until my next article which has my prediction for the enter first round and the entire playoffs.  Good luck to all teams.

#1 Strasburg vs #16 Manual

Strasburg enters the playoffs as the #1 overall seed and looking for their fourth consecutive trip to the State Championship.  Strasburg enters with a regular season record of 9-0 and played against 5 playoff teams going 5-0 against them.  Strasburg defensively has played outstanding giving up just 91 points this season which is 4th best in class 1A.  Offensively Strasburg has scored 355 points this year which is the best in Class 1A.  Offensively Strasburg is balanced in their offensive attack.  QB Collin Russell is playing well this season with 898 yards passing, 13 TDs, and just 2 INTs.  The rushing attack is led by Trystan Graf who has 1043 yards rushing and 14 TDs.  A.J Hemphill and Jayden Zacher are two other names to look out for in this offense.

Manual enters the playoffs as the #16 teams and the league champion of the Foothills League.  Manual is on a 4-game winning streak and ended the regular season with a 4-5 record.  Manual did not play any playoff teams during the regular season and will look to play their best game of the season to upset Strasburg.  Defensively Manual has given up 203 points which is 23rd best in 1A.  Offensively Manual has scored 170 which is 20th best in 1A.  Offensively Manual is a rush first team but QB Tayvon Toliver has had some success passing for 310 yards and 5 TDs.  The rushing attack and offense go thru RB Lajayzhin Miles who has 974 yards rushing and 9 TDs.  Miles is the key to the Manual offense.

#8 Highland vs #9 Hotchkiss

Highland enters the playoffs as the #8 seed and runner up in the Northern League.  Highland finished the regular season with a 6-3 record and played against 4 playoff teams going 2-2.  Highland defensively has given up 134 points which is 11th best in 1A.  Offensively Highland has scored 282 points which is 7th best in 1A.  Offensively Highland is a run first team but can throw the ball successfully.  QB Sam Hnizdil has played well with 790 yards passing and 8 TDs.  The rushing attack is led by Holden Morgan who has 1143 yards rushing and 15 TDs.  Highland offensively must have success rushing to open the passing attack up.

Hotchkiss enters the playoffs as the #9 seed and runner up in the Western Slope League.  Hotchkiss played well this season going 7-2 but only played against two playoff teams going 0-2 in those games.  Hotchkiss defensively gave up 101 points which is 6th best in 1A.  Offensively Hotchkiss has scored 242 which is 11th best in 1A.  Hotchkiss offensively is a run heavy team but QB Yahir Chavez has contributed both on the ground and thru the air with 395 yards passing, 508 yards rushing and 9 TDs.  The main contributor to the rushing attack is Jace Peebles who has 1606 yards rushing and 15 TDs.  Hotchkiss must dominate the line of scrimmage to have success this week.

#4 Meeker vs #13 Buena Vista

Meeker enters the playoffs as the #4 seed and the Western Slope League Champion.  Meeker played well this season going 8-1 playing against 3 playoff teams going 2-1 in those games.  Meeker defensively gave up 123 points which is 8th best in 1A.  Offensively Meeker scored 334 points which is 3rd best in 1A.  Offensively Meeker is a pass first team but can be balanced in their offensive attack.  QB Ryan Phelan is catalyst of this offense and has 2,394 yards passing, 21 TDs and just 5 INTs.  The rushing attack is led by Jeremy Woodward who has 718 yards rushing and 6 TDs.  Two other names to watch out for in this offense is Kelton Turner and Cole Rogers.  Ryan Phelan and Jeremy Woodward must come up big for Meeker if they plan to make a deep run in the playoffs.

Buena Vista enters the playoffs as the #13 seed and finished in 3rd place in the Tri-Peaks League.  Buena Vista finished the regular season with a 6-3 record playing against 4 playoff teams going 1-3 in those games.  Buena Vista defensively has given up 187 points which is 20th best in 1A.  Offensively Buena Vista has scored 173 points which is 19th best in 1A.  Offensively Buena Vista is pass first team but also can attack on the ground.  QB Kik Molitor leads the offense with 840 yards passing, 7 TDs but has 8 INTs.  The rushing attack is led by Brandan Cattell who has 425 yards rushing.  QB Kik Molitor must have his best game of the season if Buena Vista plans to upset Meeker in this game.

#5 Centauri vs #12 Flatirons Academy

Centauri enters the playoffs as the #5 seed and the Southern Peaks League Champion.  Centauri finished the regular season with an 8-1 record playing against 3 playoff teams going 2-1 in those games.  Centauri defensively has dominated this year giving up just 92 points which is 5th best in 1A.  Offensively Centauri has scored nearly at will racking up 352 points which is 2nd best in 1A.  Offensively Centauri runs a spread offense but like to run first out of this offense.  QB Eric Maez leads the offense and has 882 yards passing, 14 TDs, and just 2 INTs.  A pair of RB’s lead the way for Centauri Mason Claunch (672 yards) and Taj Cornum (632 yards).  Offensively Centauri must control the line of scrimmage and have some big performances from Maez, Cornum, and Claunch.

Flatirons Academy enters the playoffs as the #12 seed and finished third place in the Northern League.  Flatirons Academy finished the regular season with a 6-3 record playing against 4 playoff teams going 1-3 in those games.  Flatirons Academy gave up 142 points on defense which is 14th best in 1A.  Offensively Flatirons Academy has scored 275 points which is 8th best in 1A.   Flatirons Academy relies heavily upon QB Jacob Dube.  Jacob Dube has 599 yards passing, 603 yards rushing, and 15 total TDs.  He is the main weapon offensively for Flatirons Academy but also look out for RB Deverick Dow and WR Trenton Rowan.  Flatirons Academy will look for Dube to have a massive game to try and upset Centauri in this game.

#3 Limon vs #14 Rye

Limon is your defending State Champion and enter the playoffs as the #3 seed and the runner up in the North Central League.  Limon finished the regular season with a 7-2 record and played against 6 playoff teams going 4-2 in those games.  Limon played a tough regular season record and we will see how it prepared them for the playoffs.  Limon defensively gave up 133 points which is 10th best in 1A.  Offensively Limon scored 312 points which is 5th best in 1A.  Limon offensively is a run first team but QB Trey Hines has really stepped up this year with 739 yards passing, 9 TDs, and 5 INTs.  The rushing attack is led by Kory Tacha 1098 yards rushing and 8 TDs and Jeremiah Leeper 666 yards rushing and 14 TDs.  Offensively Limon must continue to dominate the line of scrimmage and look for Tacha and Leeper to have big games.

Rye enters the playoffs as the #14 seed and finished 4th place in the Tri-Peaks League.  Rye had a massive turn around this season and got into the playoffs.  Rye finished the regular season with a 6-3 record and played against 4 playoff teams going 1-3 in those games.  Rye defensively gave up 120 points which is 6th best in 1A.  Offensively Rye scored just 176 points which is 18th best in 1A.  Rye relies heavily on their defense to keep them in games.  Offensively Rye is a run heavy team.  QB/RB Hayden Polk leads the way with 411 yards rushing and 4 TDs.  Also, Bryce Benz (394 yards) and Kreed Rahl (345 yards) help in the offense.  Rye must get improved production from their offense, but this defense must continue to step up in the post-season.

#6 Florence vs #11 Wray

Florence enters the playoffs as the #6 seed and are the Tri-Peaks League Champions.  Florence finished the regular season with a 8-1 record playing against 5 playoff teams going 4-1 in those games.  Florence defensively is near the top giving up just 82 points this season which is 2nd best in 1A.  Offensively Florence has also dominated scoring 300 points which is 6th best in 1A.  Offensively Florence is a run heavy team.  QB Josh Martinez has had his times this season with 323 yards passing and 4 TDs.  The rushing attack is led by RB Owen Busetti who has 1365 yards rushing and 21 TDs also pitching in is RB Jacob Kennedy who has 687 yards rushing and 8 TDs.  Offensively Florence must be able to run the ball to have success this post season.

Wray enters the playoffs as the #11 seed and finished fourth in the North Central League.  Wray is on a 3-game losing streak and will be looking to bounce back in the first round.  Wray finished the regular season with a 5-4 record playing against 5 playoff teams going 2-3 in those games.  Wray played a tough schedule and we will see how it prepares them for this game.  Wray defensively gave up 165 points which is 16th best in 1A.  Offensively Wray has struggled scoring at times scoring just 156 points which is 24th best in 1A.  Offensively Wray is a run first team but QB Tyler Collins has shown he can throw with 532 yards passing and 4 TDs.  The rushing attack is led by Emmanuel Huerta (627 yards rushing) and Tyler Collins (580 yards rushing).  For Wray to have success they must get more production from the offense, but their defense must continue to play tough.

#7 C.S Christian vs #10 Yuma

C.S Christian enters the playoffs as the #7 seed and are the runner ups in the Tri-Peaks League.  C.S Christian finished the regular season with a 7-2 record playing against 4 playoff teams going 2-2 in those games.  C.S Christian defensively has played outstanding this year giving up just 75 points which is the best in 1A.  Offensively C.S Christian has also had plenty of success scoring 332 points which is 4th best in 1A.  Offensively C.S Christian is a run first team, but they can attack in a balanced manner.  QB Caleb Stockton has 760 yards passing, 13 TDs, and just 2 INTs.  The rushing attack is led by Peyton Brones 1106 yards rushing and 11 TDs and Joe Dunn 706 yards rushing and 8 TDs.  C.S Christian must have success from the rushing attack to be successful in this game.

Yuma enters the playoffs as the #10 seed and finished third in the North Central League.  Yuma has been another big surprise this season and finished the regular season with a 6-3 record playing against 4 playoff teams going 2-2 in those games.  Yuma defensively has given up just 133 points which 9th best in 1A.  Offensively Yuma has scored 214 points which is 14th best in 1A.  Yuma offensively is a run heavy team but take advantage of the big pass plays.  QB Chase McCreath has 374 yards passing and 4 TDs on just 19 completions.  The rushing attack is led by Cayden Lynch who has 870 yards rushing and 11 TDs also pitching in is Clay Robinson who has 404 yards rushing and 3 TDs.  Yuma must control the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball to have success and try and pull the upset.

#2 Holyoke vs #15 Rocky Ford

Holyoke enters the playoffs as the #2 seed and the winners of the North Central League.  Holyoke finished the regular season with a 9-0 record playing against 6 playoff teams going 6-0 against those teams.  Holyoke defensively has been near the top giving up just 85 points which is third best in 1A.  Holyoke offensively has dominated as well scoring 273 points which is 9th best in 1A and considering they played 6 playoff teams that is pretty good.  Offensively Holyoke is balanced in their offensive attack but lean a bit more towards the pass.  QB Miles Sprague has played outstanding this year throwing for 1530 yards, 11 TDs, and 5 INTs in just his sophomore year.  The rushing attack is led by RB Blake Mosenteen who has 645 yards rushing and 10 TDs.  Holyoke offensively can attack both on the ground and thru the air and will make this offense tough to stop.

Rocky Ford enters the playoffs as the #15 seed and winners of the Santa Fe League.  Rocky Ford finished the regular season with a 6-3 record playing against 3 playoff teams going 0-3 in those games.  Rocky Ford also had a big turn around this year beating Crowley County and Peyton for the first time in some years.  Rocky Ford defensively has given up 136 points which is 12th best in 1A.  Offensively Rocky Ford has scored 183 points which is 15th best in 1A.  Rocky Ford is a pass first team but have had success running the ball.  QB Isiah Garcia has led the offense with 1139 yards passing and 13 TDs.  The rushing attack is led by Chance Finish who has 546 yards rushing and 3 TDs.  Rocky Ford will need Garcia to have his best performance of the season to pull the upset.
