Class 2A Boys Basketball Sweet 16 Predictions
We moved into the sweet 16 after a great first round of basketball. Some great match ups take place in the sweet 16 and should make for a fun night of basketball. I am shortening my predictions and just want to touch on them quickly.
Playoff Prediction Review: 7-1
Missed Meeker over Holyoke
#1 Wray over #16 Monte Vista
Monte Vista moved into the sweet 16 defeating Lyons 59 to 52. Was a solid win for Monte Vista as Lyons cut into the lead multiple times but Monte Vista always had an answer. Wray enters the playoffs at 12-0 and winners of the Lower Platte League. Wray has played a tough schedule and have a big win over Limon. I am going with Wray over Monte Vista. Wray won their first-round game last year in the great 8 so have the experience over Monte Vista. Both teams played tough schedule and I think Wray’s defense will be too much, but I do expect a close game. Wray has not played in a few weeks so could be rusty.
#9 Mancos over #8 Sedgwick County
Mancos moved into the sweet 16 winning a Double OT game over Custer County 74 to 67. Mancos played this game with just 6 players and held off a very tough Custer County team. I am hopeful that Mancos is at full strength heading into their sweet 16 game. Sedgwick County enters the playoffs with a 10-4 record. Sedgwick County finished 5th in the Lower Platte League. Sedgwick County ended their regular season winning their final 4 games to clinch a first-round bye. I believe this will be a very good game. If Mancos is at full strength, I do think they win this game but will be close. I am going with Mancos over Sedgwick County
#5 Holly over #12 Wiggins
Wiggins moved into the Sweet 16 beating Vail Christian 59 to 48. Wiggins built an early lead and were able to hold Vail Christian off. Holly enters the playoffs at 13-1 and winner of the Santa Fe League. Holly lone loss of the season comes to Sanford who is the #7 seed. Holly went on a big winning streak since that loss and come into the playoffs on a hot streak. I am going with Holly over Wiggins. I think Holly has to much firepower for Wiggins to keep pace. Wiggins must have a good defensive plan to defeat a very good Holly team.
#4 Yuma over #13 Fowler
Fowler moved into the sweet 16 defeating Vail Mountain 37 to 34. Fowler hit a buzzer beater to win the game and not send it to OT. The buzzer beater was hit by Val Leone and now Fowler must quickly refocus on a team that meet last year in the great 8. Yuma enters the playoffs at 7-3 and finished tie for first in the Lower Platte League. Yuma has not played a game since February 20th due to COVID and quarantine. Yuma will have to quickly shake off the rust and get back to playing good basketball like they were before the break. Fowler and Yuma faced each other last year in the Great 8 and it was a great game. I am expecting another great game. Yuma was playing good basketball to end the year but I do think they will be a bit rusty. I am still picking Yuma over Fowler but this will be a great game.
#2 Limon over #15 Lake County
Lake County moved into the Sweet 16 defeating Atlas Prep 53 to 52. This was a great game but Atlas Prep took a lead into the fourth quarter. Lake County had a big fourth quarter and outscored Atlas Prep 15 to 12 to complete the comeback. Limon enters the playoffs at 13-1 and winner of the Union Pacific League. Limon lone loss this season comes to #1 Wray. Limon also ended the season on a 3 game winning streak. I do not think either team will be rusty and should be a good game. Limon will be my pick over Lake County. I think Limon will have to much offensively and will pull away in the second half.
#10 Ignacio over #7 Sanford
Ignacio moved into the sweet 16 defeating Crested Butte 54 to 51. Ignacio had to hold off a late rally by Crested Butte in the 4th quarter. Ignacio was outscored by Crested Butte 25 to 14 but hit enough clutch shots to win the game. Ignacio must quickly refocus and face Sanford in a rematch from earlier in the year. Sanford enters the playoffs at 9-4 and finished second in the Southern Peaks League. Sanford ended the season on a bit of a slide losing 2 of their last 3 games including a tough loss to Del Norte to end the season. Sanford will be looking to kick the slide and face an Ignacio team they defeated earlier in the year. I am going with Ignacio over Sanford. For Sanford to avoid the upset they must have big performances from their guards. If Ignacio can handle the height of Sanford, I give them the advantage in terms of guard play. This will be a great game!
#6 Denver Christian over #11 Del Norte
Del Norte moved into the Sweet 16 defeating Dayspring Christian 45 to 25. Del Norte played extremely well in the second half and pulled away. Del Norte is playing their best basketball right now and are causing problems for a lot of teams. Del Norte defense is what is carrying them and timely shooting. Denver Christian enters the playoffs with a 12-2 record and a second-place finish in the Mile High League. Denver Christian will be looking to bounce back off an end of the season loss to Highland. Denver Christian played well during the regular season picking up multiple 15-point wins. I am picking Denver Christian over Del Norte in this game. Denver Christian will need their guard play to be on point and must take advantage of their height they will have. Del Norte has played against height but must stay out of foul trouble and must have big performances from their guard to flip the script on Denver Christian. This could be the best game of the Sweet 16.
#3 Peyton over #14 Meeker
Meeker moved into the Sweet 16 defeating Holyoke 58 to 51. Meeker outscored Holyoke 34 to 28 in the second half to pull away and secure the first-round victory. Meeker will now take the long road trip to Peyton and hope to pull another big upset. Peyton enters the playoffs with a 11-1 record and winners of the Black Forrest League. Peyton lone loss of the season is to 3A Manitou Springs who is a top 8 seed in Class 3A. Since that loss Peyton has been on a hot streak including big wins over Fowler, Sanford, Simla, and Evangelical Christian. I am going with Peyton over Meeker. Meeker will have the height advantage but will need their guard to play great defense on Peyton. Peyton must have a good shooting day and if Peyton can shoot well then I give them the advantage.
