Kendyl Eddleman hammered eight kills and Marianna Delacruz served up eight aces for La Veta as the the Redhawks rolled to a straight set victory over Manzanola in a key Fisher Peaks contest on Wednesday. The win kept La Veta unbeaten overall.
Thursday has a busy slate for many of the top teams, beginning in the YWKC where Otis visits #4 Idalia. Idalia snapped a 12-match losing streak to the Bulldogs last season and that gave the Wolves the league title. Still, they are just 4-25 against Otis dating back to 2007. The Wolves feature a trio of big hitters in Kyndal Richards (68 kills), Jenna Wieser (64), and Addyson Juhnke (63), while Jaylyn Kechter (46) gives them a solid #4 option. For Otis, Rowan Tribelhorn (97) and Madelyn Willeke (79) dominate the attack.
Second-ranked Fleming hosts Lone Star in a clash of neighbors from different leagues. The Wildcats ride the right arm of Kally Kirkwood, who has 147 kills on the season, 108 more than the next closest on the team. Their two losses have come to Merino and Wiggins. Lone Star broke a five-match skid in its last contest. This is just the fifth time the two have met since 2007, with Fleming not having dropped a set in the previous four.
Fleming’s league rival in the North Central, #8 Briggsdale, visits Weldon Valley with the Falcons looking for a fourth straight win overall and a seventh consecutive in the series. Only three members of the Briggsdale squad have more than 10 kills, led by Jenna Krise with 138. Kayl Klem (70) and Macie Klem (39) are the other two. Weldon Valley beat Caliche in a sweep on Tuesday.
Ninth-ranked McClave, fresh off its upset of #7 Kit Carson on Tuesday, will host South Baca in non-league play. Abrielle Gomez will look to build upon her 14 kill performance from that win earlier in the week. The freshman leads the Cards with 65 on the season. South Baca has dropped two straight entering this contest. Kate Elmore has an interesting stat line for the Patriots, as she comes into the match with 26 blocks and 24 kills. Both lead the team.
There are two big match-ups in the Union Pacific, with Flagler visiting 2A Limon, and Genoa-Hugo hosting 2A Burlington. Nucla has a non-conference road game at Telluride, with the Mustangs looking for a second straight win and their fourth in five matches. Evangelical Christian picked up a huge sweep victory over Flagler last week and looks to add another victory to the column with a home contest against Calhan.
