Class 1A Football Week 9 League Breakdown
2 games left for most Class 1A teams and league title are starting to be decided. We should have a few more League Champions crowned after this week. I am looking more into the RPI this week, but I should have a much better picture after this week.
Two teams remain at the Top of the league standings and the league title won’t be decided until the final week of the season. Platte Canyon and Manual are both 3-0 and don’t play each other till next week. Platte Canyon beat Sheridan easily 33-6 and this week play Lake County. Platte Canyon should be 4-0 after this week and await some of the results from this week. The main game in the Foothills league is Manual at Clear Creek. Manual grabbed a huge 40 to 18 wins over Jefferson and stayed alive for a league title. Manual now will be playing an explosive offense and must be ready defensively. Clear Creek is in 3rd place and a win here keep their title hopes alive. Clear Creek needs to win this game and hope Manual can upset Platte Canyon. Clear Creek must be ready defensively as well and must take care of the ball on offense. I am going with Clear Creek in this game but still the league title won’t be decided until next week. RPI wise the Foothills league looks more and more like a 1 berth league. Jefferson, Sheridan, and Lake County are all eliminated from the playoffs. Manual and Jefferson face off this week and are both on the verge of being eliminated. If Manual loses they still have a shot if they can upset Platte Canyon. If Clear Creek loses then they will be eliminated from the playoff hunt. Platte Canyon is #14 and still on the bubble they cannot feel safe without the league crown.
RPI: #14 Platte Canyon, #25 Clear Creek, #27 Manual, #32 Jefferson, #35 Sheridan, #39 Lake County
North Central League
The North Central League has 1 team sitting atop the standings and that is Limon. Limon blasted Burlington 48 to 0 to grab control of the league crown. Limon though still has two very tough games and the final game of the season will be for a league title. Limon this week faces Wray and should be a very good game. Wray will have to find a way to stop a balanced offensive attack and must run the ball effectively. Wray can really boost their resume with an upset of Limon. Limon defensively must stop the run and avoid the big pass plays. Limon success we depend upon their defenses ability to stop the run. Limon offensively is tough to stop with QB Cannan Bennett and RB Hauk Hubbard leading the way. I am going with Limon in this game. Holyoke and Burlington are sitting in second place in league. Burlington has the head to head over Holyoke and were you finish in league matters. Holyoke this week faces Wiggins and they should come out with the win. Holyoke final game of the season is against Limon and that is for a league title. Burlington has a much tougher opponent this week. Burlington hosts Yuma. Yuma is coming off a 37 to 12 win over Wiggins. Yuma is 3-4 over and 1-2 in league and have played a tough schedule. Yuma is missing a key win and a win over Burlington would be that win. Burlington is hoping to bounce back after being blanked by Limon. Burlington must get better QB play and must play better on defense. Burlington has a shot still at winning the league title, but they must beat Yuma to do so. I am going with Burlington in this game. RPI wise only Wiggins is eliminated from the playoffs. All the other 5 teams are in the Top 20 in the RPI. Yuma is the lone team on the outside of the Top 16. They will need to win probably 1 of their final 2 games to get into the playoffs I don’t seem them holding off or jumping into the Top 16 going 0-2. Wray is in a similar boat at #15. Their final game against Yuma probably determines who gets into the playoffs and who is sitting at home. Holyoke is #8 and a win over Wiggins will lock them into the playoffs. Burlington is the same a win over Yuma and they are a lock for the playoffs. Limon is sitting with the #1 RPI and two wins to close the year out will probably give them the #1 overall seed.
RPI: #1 Limon, #5 Burlington, #8 Holyoke, #15 Wray, #17 Yuma, #34 Wiggins
Strasburg has taken over as the top team in the Northern League. Strasburg sits at 3-0 in league but has two tough games remaining both of which are important to winning the league title. Strasburg this week faces Estes Park. Estes Park is having a good season at 4-3 and 2-1 in league. Estes Park though has not played Strasburg or Highland. Estes Park has a chance to force a 4-way tie for first place if they can upset Strasburg. Estes park will need to play their best game of the season. Strasburg can move 1 win closer to a league title by beating Estes Park. They cannot officially lock up the league title till next week game against Cornerstone Christian. Strasburg did not play last week and had extra time to prepare for this game. Strasburg is my pick in this game. As mentioned there are two other teams tied for second place Cornerstone Christian and Highland. Cornerstone Christian lost to Highland last week and does not have the head to head over them. Cornerstone Christian faces Pinnacle this week and should cruise to the win. Highland is in the best shape to finish second and must win out to have a shot at the playoffs. RPI wise Lyons and Pinnacle are eliminated from the playoffs. Estes Park is also right on the verge of being eliminated but an upset or two could easily get them into the playoffs. Cornerstone Christian needs to win out. I can check their RPI more after this week’s game, but I am guessing this week’s win won’t move them up much from 22 and the Strasburg game will be to get into the playoffs. Highland is #16 and will be trying to hold off anyone from 17-20. Highland won’t get any help from this week’s game either. They close the year against Estes Park which will be a slight boost in RPI. I am guessing if Highland wins out they get into the playoffs but next week RPI will tell a ton. #3 Strasburg is a lock for the playoffs.
RPI: #3 Strasburg, #16 Highland, #22 Cornerstone Christian, #28 Estes Park, #37 Lyons, #40 Pinnacle
Santa Fe League
The Santa Fe League comes down to this weekend when Peyton and Crowley County square off. Peyton beat Rocky Ford last week 36-6 and Crowley County beat John Mall 40-0 and neither have been challenged since moving into the league play. Peyton enters the game giving up just 37 points all year while scoring 298 points. Peyton offense is a run first attack but QB play has improved enough to keep you honest. Peyton defensively will be looking to shut down a balanced offensive attack. Crowley County defensively have given up just 64 points while scoring 209 points. Offensively Crowley County is also a run first offense but have shown they can throw the ball effectively. QB Adam Schulz may need a big game to pull the upset. Crowley County defense will have to play physical against Peyton. Both teams will get into the playoffs, but the league crown also gives a home game in the first round. I am going with Peyton in this game due to their defense. Elsewhere in the League, Rocky Ford continues to move up the RPI and hope to continue their rise towards the playoffs. Rocky Ford plays Trinidad this week and hope to snag another win. Rocky Ford needs to probably win out and get some help to grab a playoff spot. RPI wise Ellicott and Trinidad are eliminated. I cannot officially eliminate John Mall yet but if they don’t jump up a ton after this week I think they may be eliminated. Rocky Ford we mentioned above is sitting at #21 and needs to win out. Their game against John mall next week will be a huge game. Crowley County and Peyton are both Top 10 teams and are locks for the playoffs.
RPI: #2 Peyton, #10 Crowley County, #21 Rocky Ford, #30 John Mall, #31 Ellicott, #38 Trinidad
Southern Peaks League
Centauri wrapped up the league title after receiving a forfeit win last week. They get the auto berth and if they finish in the Top 10 a home game in the first round. Centauri this week play a non-league game against Florence which is a huge game in terms of RPI. Centauri should be tested by a tough Florence defense and should give us a better look at Florence. The big game to talk about this week is Monte Vista vs Center. This is not just a big game for second place but also a huge game in terms of RPI. Center is coming off a tough 12-6 loss to St. Mary’s. Center dropped quite a bit from #17 to #24 in the RPI and are on the verge on being eliminated. Center offensively has struggled to get much going and if their defense can’t slow down Monte Vista offense could be in trouble. Monte Vista has been playing better as of late and have really dominated in league. Monte Vista lone league loss was to Centauri. Monte Vista blasted Ignacio last week 62 to 8. Monte Vista defensively has improved a ton and must be ready for a passing attack from Center. If Monte Vista has success running the ball they will be tough to stop. I am going with Monte Vista to grab the win. RPI wise Dolores and Ignacio are eliminated from the playoffs. Center is #24 and a loss to Monte Vista will probably eliminate them from the playoffs. Monte Vista is #18 and will probably need to win out to grab a playoff spot. Monte Vista plays Center and Buena Vista and back to back wins will probably move them up into the Top 14. Centauri is already your league champion but improving your seed is key.
RPI: #4 Centauri, #18 Monte Vista, #24 Center, #29 Dolores, #33 Ignacio
Two teams sit atop the league standings and the league title won’t be decided until next week. Colorado Springs Christian and Florence both are undefeated in league and that will be a huge game. Florence this week goes out of league to face Centauri and we talked about that game in the Intermountain breakdown. Colorado Springs Christian faces St. Mary’s this week. St. Mary’s has struggled against top teams losing to both Florence and Buena Vista by double digits. St. Mary’s would have to play their best game this season to upset CSCS. CSCS last week blanked Rye 40-0. CSCS has ran past teams and their rushing attack has been the reason why. CSCS should grab another win this week and move to 3-0 in league and 7-1 overall. The other league game this week is Buena Vista at Rye. Both teams are coming off loses and this game we determine a ton. Both teams sit at 1-2 in league and both lost to Florence and CSCS. This game could help determine which team gets into the playoffs. If Buena Vista wins they keep their hopes alive but a loss could drop them out of the Top 16. Rye is #20 and a loss could eliminate them from the playoff hunt. I think defense will be key in this game. I am going with Buena Vista to win. RPI wise all 5 teams are in the hunt. If St. Mary’s loses this week I think they will be eliminated. I mentioned above Buena Vista and Rye and that game is huge for both teams. Florence and CSCS are lock for the playoffs.
RPI: #6 Colorado Springs Christian, #7 Florence, #11 Buena Vista, #20 Rye, #23 St. Mary’s,
Western Slope League
Meeker took the first steps towards a league crown beating Paonia 32-0. Meeker now controls their own destiny and a win over Olathe this week would give them a league crown. Olathe on the other hand still has a shot at the league title and an upset of Meeker would force a three-way tie. Olathe picked up a win last week blanking Hotchkiss 42-0. Olathe relies on their defense and rushing attack to get things going. Olathe must get their rushing game going if they plan to pull the upset. Meeker has relied heavily on sophomore QB Ryan Phelan and he has risen to the challenge. Meeker also has started better rushing production but QB play is key to Meeker. Defense is also another key for Meeker as they have only allowed 7 points in league play and 84 points overall. Meeker is my pick in this game. Paonia who sits in second place and could either be alone in second after this week or tied for first if they beat Grand Valley. Paonia is hoping to bounce back this week and I think they will. They must get their rushing game going to have success. Grand Valley is still hoping to grab a playoff spot, but they need this upset to have any shot at the playoffs. Grand Valley will have to play good football. RPI wise only Hotchkiss is eliminated but Grand Valley is also close. If Grand Valley loses to Paonia they may also be eliminated. Cedaredge is #19 in the RPI and they face Hotchkiss this week. Cedaredge must continue to win and a loss to Hotchkiss would derail any playoff hopes. Cedaredge post season hopes will come down to their final game against Paonia. Olathe is currently #13 in the RPI and if they lose to Meeker it probably won’t move them out of the Top 16 but close. Olathe plays Grand Valley in their final game and that will be a must win game. Paonia is #12 and their final game against Cedaredge will also be for their playoff hopes. Paonia must beat Grand Valley first of course a loss to Grand Valley would hurt and possibly move them to #16 or #17. #9 Meeker is in the best shape and a win this week would give them the league title and a lock for the playoffs.
RPI: #9 Meeker, #12 Paonia, #13 Olathe, #19 Cedaredge, #26 Grand Valley, #36 Hotchkiss
