Class 1A Football Week 4 Top Ten Breakdown

Very little movement in Class 1A this week.  The Top 4 all remain the same but at #5 Centauri lost to Pagosa Springs and drops to #7.  Strasburg and Florene both move up a spot in the rankings.  Rye joins the rankings this week starting 3-0 on the season and surprising a few teams this year.  Monte Vista drops out of the rankings to #11 after the OT loss to Paonia.  Some great games on tap this week!

#1 Holyoke (3-0)

Holyoke is off to a hot start this year starting the year at 3-0.  Holyoke moved to 3-0 with a 28-6 victory over Bridgeport NE.  Holyoke had plenty going their way offensively racking up 331 yards of total offense.  Miles Sprague continued his hot start this season and has racked up 468 yards passing on 22 attempts and 2 TDs.  The rushing attack has also been solid for Holyoke and is being led by Blake Mosenteen who has 210 yards rushing and 4 TDs.  Holyoke has a bye this week before wrapping up non-league play against Highland.

#2 C.S Christian (1-1)

C.S Christian opened the year with a loss to Holyoke and were looking to quickly bounce back and in their way was Peyton.  C.S Christian was able to bounce back nicely beating Peyton 32-14 to move back to 1-1 on the season.  C.S Christian got their rushing attack going rushing for 236 yards and 5 TDs.  The passing attack had limited success with 56 yards passing.  C.S Christian had a big day from RB Peyton Brones who had 134 yards rushing and 2 TDs.  C.S Christian defense did play well holding Peyton to just 87 yards rushing.  C.S Christian this week will face Platte Canyon.  Platte Canyon is off to an 0-2 this season and were blasted by Wiggins last week 40-8.  C.S Christian cannot take Platte Canyon light and must be ready for the run heavy offense of Platte Canyon.

#3 Limon (2-0)

Limon continued their hot start with a big 46-7 win over Crowley County.  Limon continues their title defense in a big way.  Offensively Limon had no problems racking up 273 yards of total offense.  The rushing attack played well rushing for 207 yards.  Kory Tacha and Gabe Schubarth had big games for Limon.  The passing attack did what was need going 2 for 2 for 66 yards and 1 TD and Trey Hines continues to develop as a QB for Limon.  Defensively Limon was able to hold Crowley County to 92 yards rushing and forced Crowley County to throw the ball.  Limon had 3 interceptions in the game and were able to keep Crowley County out of the endzone until the fourth quarter.  This week Limon will hit the road for a 1:00pm Saturday game against #4 Meeker.  This will be the second big test for Limon in the early season.  Defensively Limon will have to be able to stop the pass and be ready for a balanced offensive attack.  Offensively Limon will need a big day from Kory Tacha and QB Trey Hines.

#4 Meeker (3-0)

Meeker is off to a 3-0 start this season.  Meeker moved to 3-0 following the 42-20 victory over 2A Aspen.  Meeker offensively had a big day racking up 462 yards of total offense.  QB Ryan Phelan had plenty of success passing for 212 yards and 1 TD but did have 2 INTs.  The rushing attack for Meeker had their biggest day rushing for 250 yards and were led by Jeremy Woodward who had 159 yards rushing and 2 TDs.  Defensively Meeker was able to slow down the Aspen offense who did play without QB Tyler Ward.  Up next for Meeker is #3 Limon.  Meeker will have the home field advantage and this should be a battle.  Offensively this will be a huge test for Meeker.  They are facing a top defense and I think really test how good this Meeker offense is.  Defensively Meeker will look to control the line of scrimmage.  Meeker vs Limon should be one of the best games in the state this weekend!

#5 Strasburg (3-0)

Strasburg continued their hot start moving to 3-0 following the 14 to 0 victory over rival Bennett.  Usually this game is an offensive shootout but turned into a defensive struggle this year.  Strasburg had success stopping the run and keeping Bennett out of the endzone.  Strasburg offensively had some success rushing for 227 yards and passing of 83 yards.  QB Collin Russell threw for 83 yards and 1 INT and the rushing attack was led by Russell as well.  Strasburg has a bye this week to prepare for #3 Limon.  We will go into more depth on this game next week.

#6 Florence (2-0)

Florence had a bye this past week to prepare for Monte Vista.  Florence two weeks ago blasted Peyton 34-0 and are off to a very hot start.  Florence will now look towards Monte Vista.  Monte Vista is off to an 0-2 start but played two top 10 opponents to start the year.  We will have to see how Monte Vista bounces back after losing in OT to Paonia.  Florence defensively will be tested by a more balanced offensive attack of Monte Vista.  Florence first key defensively will be to stop QB/RB Kaidon Wenta.  Offensively this should be a tough test for Florence.  Florence will need a big day from RB Owen Busetti.  This should be a good game and test for both teams.

#7 Centauri (1-1)

Centauri picked up their first loss of the season falling to Pagosa Springs 28-20.  Centauri was leading in the second half 20-14 before Pagosa Springs scored back to back to win 28-20.  Centauri will now look to gather the pieces and bounce back.  Centauri will hit the road for the first time this season when they travel to Olathe.  Olathe grabbed their first win of the season beating Center 28-0.  Centauri defensively will need to be able to stop the run.  Olathe is a run heavy offense, and this will be key for Centauri if they plan to move to 2-1.   Centauri offensively will be looking to have a break out game and I think will have some success this week.

#8 Paonia (1-1)

Paonia was able to move to 1-1 on the season following a 17-14 OT victory over Monte Vista.  Paonia was able to get an FG in OT to snag the victory.  Paonia relied solely on their rushing attack.  Paonia had 205 yards rushing and were led by RB Logan Green who had 74 yards rushing.  QB Carlos Lozano did not complete a pass in the game.  Defensively Paonia was able to limit the Pirate offense to just 94 yards rushing but Monte Vista did have 94 yards passing.  Paonia had a big day defensively from Levi Peterson who had 9 tackles in the game.  Up next for Paonia is a home game against 2A Coal Ridge.  Coal Ridge is 1-2 on the season and have back to back losses to Meeker and Hotchkiss.  Paonia will be looking to limit the rushing attack of Coal Ridge and I think Paonia offense should have a big day rushing once again.  This will be a good test for Paonia.

#9 Rye (3-0)

Rye moved into the Top 10 for the first time this year following a 3-0 start.  Rye has 3 straight victories over Ellicott, Crowley County, and John Mall.  Last week Rye beat John Mall 35-0 and offensively were able to run with plenty of success rushing for 252 yards.  Rye had 4 different runners with over 50 yards.  QB Hayden Polk led all rushers with 57 yards and the main back Bryce Benz had 51 yard and 2 TDs.  Rye defensively had some success holding John Mall to 173 yards rushing and 20 yards passing.  Rye this week will face Rocky Ford.  This is the final non-league game for Rye and have a bye next week.  Rocky Ford is off to a 0-2 start and are looking to bounce into the win column.  Rye offensively will be tested by a aggressive Rocky Ford defense and this Rocky Ford team did play Florence tough in the first half.  Defensively Rye must have success stopping the quick pass and force Rocky Ford to run the ball.  This will be a good test for Rye.

#10 Highland (1-1)

Highland is off to a 1-1 start to the season.  Highland picked up their first loss of the season last week to The Academy (2A).  Highland struggled stopping the pass giving up 248 yards and 3 TDs.  Highland offensively did find some success throwing but couldn’t get the ground game going rushing for just 59 yards.  Highland had an extra week to prepare for 2A Valley.  Valley is off to a 2-0 start and are playing good football.  Highland will need to find a way to stop the run this week.  Highland offensively also must be able to score points and get their rushing attack going.  This should be a good matchup between Highland and Valley.
