8-Man Football First Round Breakdown

Some very good matchup in the first round.  I only see a few games that are not good matchups and should make for a very good first round!

#1 Sedgwick County vs #16 Elbert

Sedgwick County enters the playoffs as your 4-Time Defending State Champions.  Sedgwick County is going for the rare 5-Peat.  Sedgwick County is the #1 seed and finished the regular season undefeated.  Sedgwick County played against 4 playoff teams going 4-0 against those teams.  Sedgwick County defensively has dominated every team and given up just 42 points which is tied for the best in 8-Man.  Offensively Sedgwick County has scored 496 points which is 2nd best in 8-Man.  Offensively Sedgwick County is balanced in their offensive attack.  QB Jared Ehmke leads the passing attack.  Beau Parker is the main rusher for Sedgwick County.  This team is going for a very rare feat and their biggest thing will be handling the pressure.

Elbert enters the playoffs as the #16 seed and the Central League Champion.  Elbert is also coming off a very tough loss to South Park and will look to bounce back but have a very tough match up at hand.  Elbert finished the regular season with a 7-2 record but did not play against any playoff teams.  Elbert best win is over Swink and Front Range Christian.  Defensively Elbert has given up 102 points which is 5th best in 8-Man.  Offensively Elbert has scored 287 points which is 16th best in 8-Man.  Offensively Elbert is balanced in their offensive attack.  QB Nathan Tornone leads the passing attack with 1192 yards passing, 14 TDs, and 5 INTs.  The rushing attack is led by Kade Bitterman who has 582 yards rushing and 12 TDs.  Elbert will have to play their best game of the season to try and upset the #1 seed.

#8 Merino vs #9 West Grand

Merino enters the playoffs as the #8 seed and finished in third place in the Plains League.  Merino finished the regular season with a 6-3 record and played against 5 playoff teams going 2-3 in those games.  Merino defensively has given up 192 points which is 12th best in 8-Man.  Offensively Merino has scored 269 points which is 17th best in 8-Man.  Merino will need their defense to really step up to make a big run in the playoffs also a QB must step up as well.  RB Trent Elliott is the big weapon for Merino and must make an impact to avoid a first-round defeat.

West Grand enters the playoffs as the #9 seed and was the runner up in the Northwest League.  West Grand is on a 4-game winning streak and finished the regular season with a 7-2 record.  West Grand played against 3 playoff teams going 1-2 in those games.  West Grand defensively gave up 124 points which is 6th best in 8-Man.  Offensively West Grand has scored 346 points which 9th best in 8-Man.  Offensively West Grand is a run first team.  QB Jakob Buller has a big role in the offense passing for 540 yards and rushing for another 602 yards.  The main rusher for West Grand is Rene Dominguez who has 1069 yards rushing and 18 TDs.  West Grand must have a big day from their rushing attack and must control the line of scrimmage.

#4 Vail Christian vs #13 Dove Creek

Vail Christian enters the playoffs as the #4 seed and the Northwest League Champions.  Vail Christian finished the regular season with a 9-0 record playing against just 2 playoff teams going 2-0 in those games.  Vail Christian did not play the toughest schedule and we will see how that effects them going into the playoffs.  Vail Christian defensively gave up 124 points which is tied for 6th best in 8-Man.  Offensively Vail Christian has scored 400 points which is 4th best in 8-Man.  Offensively Vail Christian attacks in a balanced manner.  QB Jamison Lee leads the passing attack with 940 yards, 19 TDs, and just 1 INT.  The rushing attack is led by Chris Cappel (675 yards) and Simon Nowicki (564 yards).  Vail Christian offensively must continue to get big games from their star players, but we will see how they handle the pressure in the playoffs.

Dove Creek enters the playoffs as the #13 seed and finished 4th in the Mountain League.  Dove Creek is on a 3-game losing streak but have played tough in 2 of the 3 losses and will be looking to bounce back.  Dove Creek finished the regular season with a 5-4 record playing against 4 playoff teams going 0-4 against those teams.  Dove Creek defensively has given up 226 points which is 18th best in 8-Man.  Offensively Dove Creek has scored 361 points which is 7th best in 8-Man.  Dove Creek offensively relies heavily upon QB Chorbin Cressler who has 678 yards passing, 1157 yards rushing and 27 total TDs.  Also pitching in offensively is RB Gauge Thompson (679 yards rushing) and Gage Bailey (643 yards rushing).  For Dove Creek to pull the upset they will look for Cressler and company to have a big day offensively.

#5 Dayspring Christian vs #12 Rangely

Dayspring Christian enters the playoffs as the #5 seed and runner up in the Plains League.  Dayspring Christian ended the regular season on a 3-game winning streak and have a record of 8-1.  Dayspring Christian played against 4 playoff teams going 3-1 in those games.  Dayspring Christian defensively gave up 171 points which is 10th best in 8-Man.  Offensively Dayspring Christian has scored 366 points which is 6th best in 8-Man.  Offensively Dayspring Christian attacks in a balanced manner.  QB Christian still leads the offense with 1189 yards passing and 13 TDs.  Caden Bonnell (727 yards rushing) and Garrett Krehbiel (583 yards rushing) lead the rushing attack for Dayspring Christian.  Dayspring Christian must have a solid playoff performance from Christian Still.  He is a huge offensive weapon for Dayspring Christian.

Rangely enters the playoffs as the #12 seed and finished 3rd in the Northwest League.  Rangely finished the regular season with a 6-3 record playing against 3 playoff teams going 1-2 in those games.  Rangely has been without Tytus Coombs since the 4th game of the season but some other players have really stepped up for Rangely.  Defensively Rangely has given up 266 points which is 23rd best in 8-Man.  Offensively Rangely has scored 324 points which is 13th best in 8-Man.  Rangely runs their offense through QB Anthony Lujan who has 716 yards passing, 906 yards rushing and 26 Total TDs.  Zane Varner also pitches in with 631 yards rushing.  For Rangely to have success this week Lujan must have a massive game and the defense must come to play.

#3 Fowler vs #14 Simla

Fowler enters the playoffs as the #3 seed and the winner of the Ark Valley League.  Fowler has dominated this season and are looking for a deep playoff run.  Fowler finished the regular season with a 9-0 record playing against just 2 playoff teams going 2-0 against those teams.  Fowler did not play the toughest schedule but dominated in their games.  Fowler defensively has given up 87 points which is 4th best in 8-Man.  Offensively Fowler has scored 507 points which is the best in 8-Man.  Offensively Fowler is a run first team but QB Luke Bitter has proven he can throw with 931 yards passing and 13 TDs.  The rushing attack is led by a due of RB’s.  Joshua Daniel has 1110 yards rushing and 19 TDs and Jackson Bates has 848 yards rushing and 15 TDs.  Fowler will be out to make a deep run and offensively must have control of the line of scrimmage and defensively come ready to play.

Simla enters the playoffs as the #14 seed and tied for second in the Southern League.  Simla sneaked into the playoffs edging out fellow Southern League opponent Swink for the final spot.  Simla ended the regular season with a 5-3 record playing against 2 playoff teams going 0-2 in those games.  Defensively Simla has given up 176 points which is 11th best in 8-Man.  Offensively Simla has struggled at times scoring just 200 points which is 22nd best in 8-Man.  Offensively Simla runs their offense thru QB Coletin Mazerall who has 954 yards passing, 851 yards rushing and 23 Total TDs.  Also helping in the offense is Brayden Glover (380 yards rushing) and Preston Bell (335 yards rushing).  Simla will be looking to shock everyone with the upset and must have a huge game from QB Coletin Mazerall.

#6 Mancos vs #11 Caliche

Mancos enters the playoffs as the #6 seed and runner ups in the Mountain League.  Mancos finished the season on a 3-game winning streak and have a record of 8-1.  Mancos played against 4 playoff teams going 3-1 in those games.  Mancos defensively has given up 131 points which is 8th best in 8-Man.  Offensively Mancos has scored 382 points which is 5th best in 8-Man.  Offensively Mancos is a run first team.  QB Breccen Morelli is still a big part of the offense with 365 yards passing and 456 yards rushing.  The main weapon for Mancos is RB Chase Moore who is having a great season and has rushed for 1658 yards and 27 TDs.  Another name to look out for offensively is Anthony Medina and defensively is Colt Fury.  Mancos is looking to avoid a first-round defeat again this year and look for the offense to really step up this week.

Caliche enters the playoffs as the #11 seed and finished 4th in the Plains League.  Caliche makes the very long journey across the state totaling 504 miles or about an 9-hour drive.  Caliche finished the regular season with a 6-3 record playing against 4 playoff teams going 1-3 in those games.  Caliche defensively has given up 209 points which is 15th best in 8-Man.  Offensively Caliche has scored 324 points which is 12th best in 8-Man.  Offensively Caliche runs their offense thru QB Dylan Huss who is having a great season.  Dylan Huss has thrown for 679 yards, rushed for 1344 yards and has 23 Total TDs.  Riley Stump (449 yards rushing) and Correy Derr (344 yards receiving) are two other names to look out for.  Caliche has a long road trip and will look to their senior leaders to help stay focused.  For Caliche to pull the upset look for Dylan Huss and Riley Stump to have massive games and Caliche will need their defense to play top notch.

#7 Pikes Peak Christian vs #10 Sargent

Pikes Peak Christian enters the playoffs as the #7 seed and the Southern League Champions.  Pikes Peak Christian ended the regular season with a 8-1 record playing against 2 playoff teams going 1-1 in those games.  Pikes Peak Christian has not played the toughest schedule and really since their first game have cruised thru the season.  Pikes Peak Christian defensively has given up just 42 points which is tied for the best in 8-Man.  Offensively Pikes Peak Christian has scored 330 points which is 10th best in 8-Man.  Pikes Peak Christian offensively is a run heavy team that takes advantage of the play action.  QB Jackson Thorne has 327 yards passing on 22 attempts and 10 TDs.  The rushing attack is led by Nathan Seay who has 1052 yards rushing and 14 TDs and another big back is Hudson Grant who has 481 yards rushing and 8 TDs.  Pikes Peak Christian is looking for another deep playoff run and will look to their rushing attack to power them into the next round.

Sargent enters the playoffs as the #10 seed and will be looking to bounce back after suffering a tough 51-0 loss to Sanford.  Sargent finished 3rd in the Mountain League and have a record of 6-3.  Sargent has played against 4 playoff teams going 1-3 in those games.  Sargent defensively has given up 217 points which is 16th best in 8-Man.  Offensively Sargent has scored 295 points which is 15th best in 8-Man.  Sargent offensively runs a triple option and will be needing some players to really step up.  QB Kage Pepper runs the show with 639 yards passing, 716 yards rushing, and 22 Total TDs.  Also helping out is Peyton Brown (426 yards rushing) and Blake Behil (644 yards rushing).  For Sargent to pull the upset they must have a huge game from Pepper and the defense must stop the run.

#2 Sanford vs #15 Holly

Sanford enters the playoffs as the #2 seed and the Mountain League Champion.  Sanford has really turned things around this season.  Sanford finished the regular season with a 9-0 record and dominated this season with their closest game coming to Mancos 52-24.  Sanford played against just 3 playoff teams but dominated in every game this season.  Sanford is reaching the playoffs for the first times since 2013.  Defensively Sanford has given up 68 points which is 2nd best in 8-Man.  Offensively Sanford has scored 425 points which is 3rd best in 8-Man.  Offensively Sanford is a run first team but can be very explosive with their passing attack.  QB Thomas Faucette leads the passing attack.  The rushing attack is led by Clay Canty and Kelton Gartrell.  Sanford will have to adjust to playoff football and must be ready offensively and defensively for a good Holly team.

Holly enters the playoffs as the #15 seed and runner ups in the Ark Valley League.  Holly finished the regular season on a 4-game winning streak and have a record of 6-3.  Holly is not a typical 15 seed and I would have them more as the #8 or #9 seed so they could be dangerous in the first round.  Holly played against 3 playoff teams going 0-3 in those games.  Holly defensively has given up 248 points which is 21st best in 8-Man.  Offensively Holly has scored 310 points which is 14th best in 8-Man.  Offensively Holly runs their offense thru their QB Dakota Eaton who has 1580 yards passing, 460 yards rushing and 24 Total TDs.  Two other big contributors are RB Donovan Pecina and WR Alex Ramos.  Holly will be looking for the big upset.  Dakota Eaton will need to have a big game and the defense for Holly must be ready for a very good offensive Sanford team.
