Boys Basketball League Predictions Class 1A
This is an update to my original Predictions. I will talk about my original predictions as well and compare some of the changes.
In Class 1A you must finish in the Top 3 or 2 of District to advance to regionals (District 1 & 6 only qualify two to regionals). I will pick essentially which teams are making it to regionals. Regionals works as follows Region 1 is District 1 & 6, Region 2 is District 4, 5, & 8, Region 3 is District 2, 3, 7.
District 1 (Only qualifies 2 teams)
- De Beque
District 1 gets only two teams into regionals. In my original predictions I went with De Beque and Ouray and nothing changes this time around. De Beque is currently undefeated with an 8-0 record. De Beque has been challenged this season in the non-league season which will be good for them going forward. Ouray is 6-2 on the season with losses to Telluride and Aspen. Ouray won’t face De Beque during the regular season and will only see them during the District tournament. North Park and Dove Creek are two teams to keep an eye on that could possibly challenge Ouray.
- Kit Carson
- Cheyenne Wells
District 2 gets 3 teams into regionals. In my original predictions I went with Kit Carson, Cheraw, and Cheyenne Wells to come out of this District. I am holding with my prediction here as well. Kit Carson has 1 loss on the season to 2A Limon who is ranked in the top 10. Kit Carson has quality wins over Holly and Eads. Cheraw is 6-1 on the season with their lone loss coming to 2A Center. Cheraw is still searching for a quality win with their best wins over South Baca and La Veta. Cheraw has a massive game against Walsh on 1/18 and another big one against Kim/Branson on 1/24. Cheyenne Wells is 5-1 on the season with their lone loss coming to Idalia. Cheyenne Wells best win is over Genoa-Hugo in Double OT. Cheyenne Wells has a huge game against South Baca on 1/17 and possible league title game against Kit Carson on 1/24. Eads is another school who I think can challenge for a top 3 spot. Eads recently picked up a huge win over Stratton/Liberty but will need to build on the win. Eads has 3 straight tough games coming up and we will learn about this team.
District 3 qualifies 3 teams into the regional tournament. In my original predictions I went with Walsh, Kim/Branson, and Springfield. I have a small change this time around. I am still going with Walsh to win and Kim/Branson to finish second, but I am going with Wiley to finish 3rd. Walsh is 6-2 on the year with losses to Syracuse KS and Kit Carson. Walsh does have big wins over Wiley and Springfield. Walsh has a huge game against Cheraw on 1/18. Kim/Branson is 7-1 on the year and I think could really push to win this district. Kim/Branson lone loss is to Raton NM by 6. Kim/Branson has quality wins over Primero and Cotopaxi. Kim/Branson moves into league play this weekend but the big matchup for them is against Cheraw on 1/24. Wiley replaces Springfield in the #3 spot this week. Wiley has played tough against quality teams and are on a two game winning streak. Wiley will be tested this week against Holly anda massive league game against South Baca. Springfield and South Baca are still very much in the mix for the #3 spot. Who gets hot during the district tournament will be the difference.
District 4 qualifies 3 teams into the regional tournament. My original picks for District 4 are Merino, Briggsdale, and Fleming. I am making a few changes this time around. District 4 is loaded with 7 very good teams and just 3 get into the regional tournament. My predictions this time around are Briggsdale, Merino, and Fleming. Briggsdale is my pick to win the district right now. Briggsdale is 6-1 on the season with quality wins over Prairie, Fleming, and Peetz. Fleming and Peetz were league games as well. Briggsdale lone loss was to De Beque in OT. Merino is my pick to finish second and are 5-2 on the season. Merino recently picked up their second loss to Caliche in OT but bounced back nicely beating Peetz. Merino has a huge game against Prairie on 1/17 and will be huge towards the District seeding. Fleming holds onto my pick for 3rd place. Fleming has losses to Union Colony Prep, Sedgwick County, and Briggsdale. Fleming does have big wins over Caliche and Arickaree/Woodlin. Fleming has a huge game against Peetz on 1/16 and Stratton/Liberty on 1/17. We will learn a lot about Fleming this weekend. Peetz, Prairie, Caliche, and Longmont Christian will be in the hunt for a top 3 spot. Looking early on I think whichever team gets hot at the right time will win this District.
District 5 qualifies 3 teams to regionals. My original predictions were Stratton/Liberty, Haxtun, and Arickaree/Woodlin. There are some changes this time around. My new predictions are Stratton/Liberty, Idalia, and Haxtun. Stratton/Liberty holds onto the #1 spot. Stratton/Liberty has had a tough non-league schedule with quality losses to Byers and Dayspring Christian. Stratton/Liberty is missing a quality win but have two big games against Arickaree/Woodlin and Fleming this weekend. Stratton/Liberty must bounce back this week. Idalia moves into the second place spot after a solid 5-3 start. Idalia losses are two De Beque, Caliche, and St. Francis KS. Idalia has a quality win over Cheyenne Wells and a big league win over Flagler/Hi Plains. Idalia has a big non-league game against Eads on 1/17. My pick for third place is Haxtun. Haxtun started the season rough losing 4 straight games all to quality opponents. Haxtun was able to pick up quality wins over Peetz and Holyoke and will be looking to keep improving heading deeper in the season. Haxtun plays Holyoke on 1/17 and then a huge game against Caliche on 1/24.
District 6 (Only 2 teams make it to Regionals)
- Sangre De Cristo
District 6 gets just two teams into regionals this year. In my original predictions I went with Sangre De Cristo and Sierra Grande as the two teams to beat in District 6. This time around we have a small tweak, and this will be a battle for the top 2 spots in the District. My pick to win District 6 is Sangre De Cristo and my pick to finish second is Cotopaxi. Sangre De Cristo is 8-0 on the season and have quality wins over Center, Sargent, and Primero. Sangre De Cristo can pick up a huge win when they face Cotopaxi on 1/24 and could be for the #1 seed in the District tournament. Cotopaxi is my pick for 2nd place. Cotopaxi has 2 losses to Kim/Branson and Evangelical Christian. Cotopaxi has quality wins over Fountain Valley and South Pakr. Cotopaxi plays South Park on 1/18 and then the massive game against Sangre De Cristo on 1/24. Sierra Grande, La Veta, Primero, Moffat/Mountain Valley, and Antonito I think all can challenge for a top 2 spot.
- Evangelical Christian
- Pikes Peak Christian
District 7 gets three teams into regionals. In my original predictions I went with ECA, Genoa-Hugo, and Pikes Peak Christian as the three teams to beat. This time around I am going to keep my predictions the same. ECA is 7-1 on the season and picked up their first loss recently to Flatirons Academy. Up next for ECA is games against Elbert and Edison. Genoa-Hugo is my pick to finish second. Genoa-Hugo has played a tough schedule to start the season. Genoa-Hugo has quality losses to Cheyenne Wells, Limon, and Peyton. Genoa-Hugo is missing a quality win but have a shot against Byers and Arickaree/Woodlin this weekend. Pikes Peak Christian is my pick for third place. Pikes Peak Christian started the season 4-0 but have picked up back to back losses to Colorado Springs School and Belleview Christian. Pikes Peak Christian faces Cripple Creek and Miami-Yoder this week and should pick up back to back wins.
- Flatirons Academy
- Denver Jewish Day
- Mile High Academy
District 8 qualifies 3 team to regionals. In my original predictions I went with Mile High Academy, Flatirons Academy, and Belleview Christian. We have a shake up this time around. My picks this time around are Flatirons Academy, Denver Jewish Day, and Mile High Academy. Flatirons Academy moves into the #1 spot. Flatirons Academy picked up a huge win over ECA and have played tough against all opponents. Flatirons Academy has a very tough game tonight against Longmont Christian. Denver Jewish Day moved into the #2 spot with a big win over Mile High Academy. Denver Jewish Day will have to prove they deserve this spot and have a game against Beth Eden on 1/16. Mile High Academy falls to the #3 spot. Mile High Academy will be looking to bounce back after the tough loss. Mile High Academy plays Champion Academy tonight before a huge game against Front Range Baptist on 1/21.
