Class 2A Boys Basketball State Tournament Predictions
We have reached the end of the road and for 8 teams it’s time to compete for the State Championship. Some great matchups in the first round and looking forward. I am going to give my prediction for the Great 8 and then I will move forward from there. I will try and give an update after each day during the State Tournament. We won’t be at the 2A State Tournament till 4:30 on Thursday but plan on being there all-day Friday.
Great 8
#1 Yuma over #8 Lotus School
Yuma made quick work to get into the regional round. While Lotus School had to pull the upset of Vail Mountain in the regional finals to make it to the State Tournament. These two do not have any common opponents on the season. Yuma does have the experience over Lotus School, and I think Yuma played the tougher schedule. I think Yuma gets the win and advances.
#5 Wray over #4 Denver Christian
My pick for the best game in the Great 8 in Class 2A if not all classes. This could easily be a final 4 matchup but instead we get it in the great 8. This game can go either way and I think comes down to execution of the game plan. Both teams’ matchup well with two of the better post players going head-to-head. I have changed my pick before writing this multiple times, but I am going with Wray over Denver Christian in a great game!
#3 Sanford over #6 Peyton
If it was not for Wray vs Denver Christian this would easily be the best game in the Great 8. This is a rematch from December when Sanford beat Peyton in OT. I expect a very similar result but also interested to see how far each team has come. I like Sanford size against Peyton, but defense will be key in this game.
#2 Limon over #7 Crowley County
Crowley County has been on fire and now look to upset a state title contender. Limon will face a red-hot Crowley County, but Limon has also been on a tear getting a revenge win over Denver Christian and holding off a pesky Meeker team to reach State. I think this is a interesting matchup between two athletic teams and should be a great game. I am going with Limon because of their experience.
Final 4
#1 Yuma over #5 Wray
A rivalry game in the final 4 and this would be the fourth meeting between these two schools. Yuma currently is 3-0 against Wray but it’s extremely tough to beat a team 4 times in one season. Expect some fireworks in the 4th meeting but I think Yuma gets by them in a fun game.
#2 Limon over #3 Sanford
I think the difference in this matchup comes to guards and experience. Limon was in the finals a year ago and I think their experience and their guards prove to be the difference. I expect a good game that could go in either direction.
Consolation Semifinal
#4 Denver Christian over #8 Lotus School
This is a District rematch and I think Denver Christian has the size to get by Lotus School again.
#6 Peyton over #7 Crowley County
Points could come in bunches in this game. I think the experience for Peyton is the difference, but I think this would be a great matchup.
